After the big international response to the  6. Future Team Cup 2009 last fall in Linz, there will be a further, extremely interesting international team competition for elites and juniors in Linz, Austria as of spring:
                The I. AUSTRIAN TEAM OPEN 2010!
Just before the European Championships this is a valuable test of the competition form of the until now 25 registered teams from 7 nations. Since this competition was announced rather late, there were many further requests to the Austrian Federation (ÖFT), to make use of this competition at the latest as of 2011. The organisers of the premiere believe they could place themselves in a real gap in the market in this point in time...

Every year, always one month before the following European Championships this should become an important and expansive competition possibility for the European and Overseas guests in the Brigittenauer Sportshall - last test for the national selected teams of the countries so to say before the continental spring highlight!
* The Concept ,
to open the yearly Austrian team-state championships and to establish them quickly as the "Austrian Team Open" is highly appreciated.

„We are making use of the Austrian Team Open as the third and deciding European Championship qualification. Directly after this, juniors and elite will be selected for Birmingham.
Due to the international atmosphere, the competition will have a special flair and the athletes will surely be motivated. Also the totally neutral position of the international judges is a welcome support for our intern European Championship decisions. I thi think the Austrian Team Open will have a good chance as a successful competition format in the future because countries of this gymnastics size really are in need of competitions of this kind!“

* usa gymn. fed: --  University of Oklahoma's Chris Brooks of Houston won the all-around title at the 2010 Winter Cup Challenge at the Las Vegas (Nev.) Sports Center. The all-around and individual event champions were determined with a combined two-day score. In addition, 17 men were named to the U.S. Senior National Team.
Chris Brooks, who lead the all-around after the first day, finished with a two-day score of 175.800. He also won an individual event title on horizontal bar (31.100).
2009 U.S. all-around champion and 2008 Olympic horizontal bar silver-medalist Jonathan Horton of Houston/Cypress Gymnastics was second with 174.750. Horton posted an event high all-around score during the final round on Saturday night.

The University of Michigan’s Chris Cameron of Winter Haven, Fla., took third with 172.450. 2009 world fourth-place horizontal bar finisher Danell Leyva of Miami/ Universal Gymnastics, finished in fourth (172.150) and was the top gymnast on parallel bars (30.700).
Stanford’s Tim Gentry of Plano, Texas, scored a 170.800 to finish in fifth.
Oklahoma’s Steven Legendre of Flower Mound, Texas, the 2009 U.S. floor exercise champion and world finalist, won the floor (30.900) and vault (32.550) titles to finish in sixth place in the all-around (170.550).
Oklahoma’s Alexander Naddour of Mesa, Ariz., finished first on pommel horse (29.900) and placed seventh in the all-around (170.300).
Ohio State University’s Brandon Wynn of Voorhees, N.J., earned the top score on still rings (30.550).

The 17 gymnasts named to the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team will be on the team through the 2010 Visa Championships in Hartford, Conn., Aug. 11-14.

Based on the Winter Cup results, 10 qualified for the team using the National Team Points System, and the remaining were selected by the Men’s Program Committee from among the Winter Cup participants and athlete petitions.

* fig-press: ---  Acting on the recommendation of its Disciplinary Commission, the FIG Presidential Commission ruled on the doping cases involving gymnast Daiane dos Santos (BRA) and acrobatic gymnast Alisa Usmanova (BLR).


The Brazilian gymnast Daiane dos Santos
is suspended for a 5-month period, starting January 27, 2010 or the day the decision was issued by the Presidential Commission, thus underscoring the proposal submitted by the FIG Disciplinary Commission.

Having tested for Furosemide on July 2, 2009 out of competition, Daiane dos Santos was heard by the FIG Disciplinary Commission on December 18, 2009 in Lausanne.

Alisa Usmanova, a member of the Byelorussian female acrobatic gymnastic trio, was suspended for the period of one year starting January 27, 2010.
Traces of the same substance had been detected in a sample taken from the Byelorussian gymnast on October 3,  at the 2009 Acrobatic Gymnastics European Championships in Vila do Conde, Portugal.
As a result of her suspension, Usmanova has been disqualified from that competition.
This will have a bearing on the final ranking, as the trio disappears altogether from the list.
Third in the all-around, the position falls to Great Britain. In Balance Beam, the Silver goes to Ukraine and the Bronze to Belgium. Both decisions have come into force. The two gymnasts, along with the World Anti-doping Agency (WADA), have the right to appeal to the FIG Appeal Tribunal or the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) respectively within 21 days of notification.

...How many champions needs the world?
This weekend in Montreal the F.I.G. opened their World Cup - series 2010 of rhythmic gymnastics. Seven more will follow and in addition to that 8 Grand Prix's, various continental events and one World Championships: 17 (!) top events!
On the first weekend in March in artistic gymnastics will be started a series of even 12 (!) World Cup competitions, during only one year! In addition to that there will be the 10th European Championships and the 7th World Championships -  since 2000 during this new millennium alone (!)...
A flood of champions is being "produced" there!
Does the World want to know this...? Who is affected by this and what do the affected persons say...?

F.I.G. : ... new solutions are needed!

How many champions needs the world, really?

?? Does gymnastics continue to subordinate mainly to the requests of the (electronic) media... and if so, how?
?? What kind of role plays the income from TV in the international rhythm of competitions?
?? How would a more reasonable arrangement of an international competitions calendar look like...?
?? How is it possible to stop the specialisation as an increasing danger for the from its' base character quite complex kind of sport artistic gymnastics...?

* fig-press: -- Convened for its first meeting at the FIG Head Office in Lausanne, the FIG Athletes’ Commission for the 2009 – 2012 Olympic Cycle has elected a new President, Finnish born Jani TANSKANEN. The Commission is made up of one representative from each of the FIG’s competitive disciplines:
Jani Tanskanen (FIN) for Men’s Artistic, Nastia Liukin (USA) for Women’s Artistic, Vera Sessina (RUS) for Rhythmic, Dmitri Poliaroush (BLR) for Trampoline, Anna Macanita (POR) for Aerobic and Sabrina Hegele (GER) for Acrobatic. The new president holds a seat on the Executive Board and one on the FIG Council as a representative of the Federation’s athlete body.
Jani Tanskanen is the Director of Men’s Artistic within the Finnish Gymnastics Federation, and was an active, national A list gymnast until 2008. Among his many achievements is a Horizontal Bar Gold at the World Championships in Lausanne in 1997.

From today on, the former French Olympic gymnast Georges GUELZEC (62) takes over as president of the European Gymnastics Union (UEG).
Guelzec defeated former president Dimitrios Dimitropoulos of Greece on 2009, November  7. A native of Nantes (FRA) Guelzec has experienced gymnastics at every level. After ten years on the French national team, including appearances in European (1969, '73) and Worlds (1970), as well as the 1972 Munich Olympics, Guelzec worked for 35 years as a coach at La Nantaise, but also an international judge and held positions within the French Federation and the UEG and was elected 2003 as vice-president.

The Italian Gymnastics Federation announced the retirement of Artistic gymnast Andrea COPPOLINO.  The 30 year old specialist on still rings was a member of the Italian national team since 1996, boasting an exemplary sporting career. Coppolino competed in a total of eight Worlds and won the bronze on rings on two occasions: 2001 in Ghent (BEL) and 2003 in Anaheim (USA), where he tied with team-mate Matteo Morandi.
A 4th place on rings at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games marked the climax of Coppolino’s international gymnastics career. Having appeared six times on the European stage, the Italian gymnast swept the 2005 title in Debrecen (HUN), ranked third in 2006 in Volos (GRE), and took home Silver in 2007 from Amsterdam (NED), all on Rings.

Ever loyal to his club Ginnastica Meda, Coppolino secured the Italian champion title six times on rings and once on Floor. An introvert, he is known for his sense of commitment and solidarity.
Coppolino was born in Cantu in North-Western Italy in 1979, earned a degree in design and is passionate about heavy metal music. In a letter to the President of the Italian Gymnastics Federation, Riccardo Agabio, Coppolino declared that he has no intention of pursing a career in gymnastics as either a coach or an administrator, but looks forward to exploring other avenues. “The ex-azzuro will always be welcome within the gymnastics family, to which he devoted his youth,” said President Agabio. “He gave the Italian gymnastics community great satisfaction, and we will remember him fondly.”

Jack Günthard (SUI) 90 Years!

The Swiss Olympic high bar champion of Helsinki 1952, Jack GÜNTHARD celebrates his 90th birthday on 2010, January 8th.
Born 1920, Jack Günthard can be proud of his long career as a gymnast, which started in 1936. The double European Champion on parallel bars and horizontal bar (1957, Paris) was also a member of the UEG Men’s Technical Committee from 1982 to 1993. As recognition for his commitment, he was awarded the title “UEG Honorary Member”. 
He dedicated his entire life to training and education, as coach of clubs or of the national teams of Switzerland (1966 to 1979) and Italy (1958 to 1964).

Jack Günthard - member of the Swiss gold taem at the world championships 1950 (Basel, Switzerland) won three times the Swiss national all-aound title from 1956 to 1958 and was also the winner of the traditional big Swiss Turnfest (1951, 1955).
In his professional life, Jack Günthard has also chosen sports by becoming a physical education teacher.
Following he became the National Coach for Italy (1958 - '64) and his native country ('65 - '85) and held that position with considerable success for some 40 years.
From 1965 until 1985, Mr. Gunthard also served the academic and athletic communities as a professor at the University of Basel, Switzerland.
Nominated by the Swiss Gymnastics Federation, Jack Gunthard was selected for induction into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997.  * >> IGHOF video
The Swiss have a special place in the history of the sport of gymnastics. Their national program continues to produce champions today as it has for a great many years.
