Ngan Thuong named Hanoi’s Sportswoman of the Year

Gymnastic superwoman Do Thi Ngan Thuong won all votes from Hanoi’s sport journalists and was named 'Hanoi’s Sportswoman of the year 2005, following a selection organised by Hanoi Department of Sports and Physical Training and 'Sports Today Newspaper'. Wushu masters Nguyen Thi My Duc and Dam Thanh Xuan came second and third in the vote where 54 selected sports journalists working in Hanoi participated.

Ngan Thuong, born in 1989 in Hanoi,
started to her career by chance. At the age of six, Ngan Thuong always suffered from illnesses. Her mother took her to the Quan Ngua sport centre in the hope that physical exercise would help her improve the strength. In an effort to select athletes for the Hanoi gymnastic team, Chinese expert Zhang discovered Ngan Thuong. The artist then said that at that point she did not know what artistic gymnastic was.
Answering a question on whether she would become a gymnastic coach or not, Ngan Thuong said that she and her friends had to train in the sport when from the age of five but at the age of 17 they retreat.
Most artists, according to Ngan Thuong, have retired before the age of 18. She said that if she had to choose again, she would decide to choose artistic gymnastics but she wanted to have a different career. She likes drawing but wishes to enroll in the National Economics University.

Chellsie Memmel headline the U.S. women team
Seventeen-year-old Chellsie Memmel, the 2005 world all-around champion (West Allis, Wisconsin), will headline the U.S. women's team. The event will showcase some of the world's elite artistic, rhythmic and trampoline gymnasts.

The growing interest in gymnastics, considerably a minority sport in the islands, presents the question of whether or not it would be sustainable at the University of Hawai'i, and what local clubs could offer to the program.
Memmel's parents, who own M&M Gymnastics, offered suggestions to local clubs.

What is he doing now..... ? (1)RONNY ZIESMER: first exam passed successfully!

The former gymnast Ronny Ziesmer who now studies biotechnology at the university of applied sciences in Senftenberg/ Germany has successfully passed his first written exam in the subject informatics.

Ronny studied a lot for this exam. Since the late fall of 2005 he has a car which is adjusted to his handicap and with this newly-gained mobility he then could fully concentrate on starting his studies...

equiped for handicaped persons:
The university of applied sciences in Senftenberg

Many requests were made to Ronny regarding a participation in TV- shows, other PR- appearances, contacts to further aid organisations, even regarding appearances in movies, etc. However, at the moment Ronny declines them all: 'The same way I’ve acted and thought before as a gymnast, consequently looking at my goals, I’m currently concentrating on the most important things and that is at the moment the next written exam at the university!'
As time permits Ronny does a special weekly fitness work-out with his handbike, either outdoors or, in case the weather is too bad, inside on special rolls. '... this is mainly to keep fit to handle my daily life.' - However, a future participation in the Berlin marathon might be possible!

Ronny in his car which has been adjusted to the needs of handicapped persons

Further support for Ronny is needed
Despite the great support which Ronny Ziesmer has received and the fact that he certainly is a role model for self-dependent and active living he’ll still need further assistance for he rest of his life.
You can support the courage of this young man with a donation to:

Savino Guglielmetti passed away...

The Italian Gymnastics Federation informed about the death on 23 January 2006 of Savino Guglielmetti, born on 26 November 1911 in Milan. This great champion has won two gold medals at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Since his friend Leon Stukelj (SLO) has died in 2003, Savino Guglielmetti was one of the oldest Olympic champion*. Until his very last days, he was very quick-minded and highly interested in gymnastics, in particular in the work of the Italian Gymnastics Federation and was very often a protagonist who was listened to and present at different events.

Two big 'azurri' champions: Igor Cassina and Savino Guglielmetti (ITA)

The F.I.G. appreciates this big personality:

Savino Guglielmetti was born in Milan on November 26, 1911 and was swift to make known his natural talent for gymnastics and . pole vaulting! Those closest to him noticed his ability, particularly his coach at that time, Mario Corrias. Discreetly, they prepared for the Olympics of 1932. In Los Angeles, Savino Guglielmetti took the Gold medal in Vault, claiming an additional Gold with the Italian team.

From that time on, Savino's victories multiplied: Italian Champion in 1935 and from 1938 to 1940.
He participated in the Games in Berlin in 1936 finishing 5th with the Squadra and ranked 12th in Individuals. Once peace had been restored to Europe in 1945, he returned to competition.

In 1948, he participated in his third Olympic Games in London. The Azzuris again ranked 5th. In the All-around Competition, judges had a hard time clearing the London fog from the Code of Points. One mistake led to another and Savino fell to 30th!
