Qualification Day in Glasgow ___________________________________
After the Thursday's podium training Friday, May 15 held the
World Cup qualification rounds of the this year's
Grand Prix in the Kelvin Hall of Glasgow.
The finals will held Saturday, May 16.
24 countries took part at these World Cup event in Scotland - 21 of them are taking part in the Men’s competition, and 12, in the Women’s.
The hosts from Great Britain have the most numerous delegation in Glasgow – 9 gymnasts, five of whom were Olympians in Beijing ....Slovenia has also come with their best (6 men and 2 women) and Russia, with 7 gymnasts (4 men and 3 women). The media were also quick to the floor, with Scots
Daniel Keatings and
Daniel Purvis the most prized interviewees.
* Flashback: The 2008 winners in Glasgow: Sanne Wevers NED (A. Bars and Beam), Alexander Shatilov ISR (Floor), Kristian Berki HUN (Pommels), Yuri Van Gelder NED (Rings), Mitja Petkovsek SLO (P. Bars) and Alen Dimic SLO (High Bar), are all back to defend their titles.
The Floor master Diego Hypolito BRA, fresh from his victory in the previous World Cup event in Maribor SLO, in April, is expected to “throw” a new signature element on Floor in Glasgow.
One of the nice surprises for the day was to see the A. Bars specialist
Jana Sikulova CZE, joining the ranks, which, in the presence of the British superstar
Beth Tweddle, British Champion
Beckie Downie, Sanne Wevers NED, and the Russian
Ekaterina Kurbatova, promises indeed to be a thrilling competition on this apparatus.
Swiss National coach
Zoltan Jordanov revealed the reason for
Ariella Kaeslin pulling out of the competition. The Olympic Vault Finalist and European All-around Bronze medallist has a broken toe, during pivot on the beam, which happened in the last few days.
There is still hope that the visa problems of
Olexander Vorobyov UKR, the 2008 Olympic Bronze medallist on Ring, could be resolved in time and he could be in the Qualifications line-up on Friday.

A total of 11 finals for the British gymnasts on home soil in the Glasgow Grand Prix World Cup Event.
Olympic Bronze medallist Louis Smith in the pommels alongside Scottish star Daniel Keatings, and double European Champion Beth Tweddle make Bars and Floor final as expected.
British Champion Rebecca Downie has qualified for Bars, Beam and Vault.
Men’s British Champion, Kristian Thomas qualifies for High Bar and Floor, Luke Folwell and Theo Seager will both compete on Vault.
Bailie Liz Cameron, Chair of Culture and Sport Glasgow, said:
"It has been a wonderful day of competition, which has thrilled audiences at the Kelvin Hall. Everyone is looking forward to the Grand Prix hotting up as it moves towards it’s climax tomorrow. We wish all the gymnasts the very best of luck in their quest for medals.”
* Women’s Qualification report 23 female gymnasts gathered for qualification at the Kelvin Hall and with only 7 gymnasts wishing to take part in the vault qualification, the competition moved straight to the Asymetric Bars.
Rebecca Downie was going very smoothly, until she uncharacteristically put her hands down on her dismount but still qualified for Saturday’s final in 6th spot (13.0).
Beth Tweddle comfortably led the qualification (14.85) from
Tacchelli (Switzerland – 14.2) and
Kurbatova (Russia – 14.075) despite a fall on her low to high bar transition.
The remainder of the routine was outstanding with Beth looking in a league of her own, which bodes well for tomorrow. A very confident and fast-moving routine from Romanian
Gabriela Dragoi, beam medallist at this year’s Europeans, led the field on this apparatus, with Rebecca Downie qualifying for her second final after finishing in 6th spot (13.775).
Liverpool gymnast
Hannah Whelan was disappointed after falling from the apparatus (13.225, 9th) in what was her only appearance in Glasgow. Tweddle again showed her supremacy and focus on floor with a high scoring routine at 15.025 and 1st place, ahead of an energetic routine from Russian
Anna Myzdrikova (14.65) and young Spaniard
Ana Maria Izurieta (Spain, 14.175).
