'Tyson Foods' and USA Gymnastics jointly announced Tyson’s three-year sponsorship of USA Gymnastics, which will extend through the 2008 Olympic Summer Games in Beijing, China. In this role, the company will headline the 2006 Tyson American Cup, one of the sport’s premier international invitationals, scheduled for March 4 at Philadelphia’s Liacouras Center at Temple University.
This partnership is a natural extension of Tyson’s 2004 associate sponsorship of USA Gymnastics’ post-Olympic championship tour....

A traditional event with a new title sponsorship

The 'Tyson American Cup', which has grown into one of the most prestigious international invitationals since its inception in 1976, showcases the world’s top male and female gymnasts as they compete for prize money and the coveted all-around title.
In 2006, the Tyson American Cup is expected to feature gymnasts from the United States, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Romania and Russia.
The 2006 Tyson American Cup is also the first major international event in the United States, and one of the first in the world, to use the new scoring system for gymnastics that allows gymnasts to earn scores above the traditional 10.0.

2005 world uneven bars and balance beam champion Nastia Liukin of Plano, Texas, headlines the U.S. Women's Team for the 2006 Tyson American Cup.
At 15, Bianca Flohr, of Creston, Ohio, is already a three-time U.S. junior national team member and the 2005 junior national champion on the bars.
Sixteen-year-old Jacquelyn Johnson, of West Chester, Ohio, qualified for the senior national team with her performance last August in the national championships: 10th in the all-around, fifth on balance beam and uneven bars.
At 15, Shayla Worley, of Orlando, Fla., has been an international elite gymnast since 2003 and was a silver medalist in the 2005 Massilia Gym Cup.

The Friendship Classic - host by the Pottsville Gymnastic Training Center - is becoming a popular international event on the world scene of artistic gymnastics.
The event - in it’s eighth year- is an international sporting event promoting gymnastics, friendship and international good will and has drawn attention world-wide due to the numerous number of different countries that have taken part and the prestigious level of gymnasts....

2005 Senior All Around Winners: Britnee Habbib (CAN) 3rd All Around; Grace Taylor (USA/Aiken) 1st All Around and Zhang Nan (CHN) 2nd All Around.

PREVIEW: 8th FRIENDSHIP CLASSIC 2006

Sanctioned by the USA Gymnastic Federation, the Friendship Classic is a club-run invitational- hosted by the Pottsville Gymnastic Training Center under the direction of Sandy Kost-Sterner and Barbara Kost-Lonergan.
The club - while small in size - has been very successful in producing this international event.
Twenty-three different countries have participated in the Friendship Classic in its seven-year history.

The Friendship Classic has grown into the largest international invitational in the USA. No other USA invitational has featured as many countries in one invitational as the Friendship Classic.

From developing countries such as Columbia, Albania and South Africa to power-house countries including China, Russia, Ukraine and Australia, gymnasts from all over the world are coming to America to take part in the Friendship Classic which has turned into a very competitive and high-level event.
Fourteen past Friendship Classic participants represented their respective country at the 2004 Olympic Games held in Athens.
At the 2005 event, China sent Olympic all around bronze medalist Zhang Nan.
Other past competitors have included Oksana Chusovita, Suzanne Harmes, Lisa Brueggemann, Loes Linders, Svetlana Kliukina, Lisa Skinner, Verona van de Leur and many more outstanding athletes.
What makes the Friendship Classic a unique and special competition?
The custom awards ( lots of them!), great coaches hospitality room , super gifts for everyone, incredible venue, some of the world’s top gymnasts and energy and excitement unlike any other competition!
While the highlight of the last weekend in March is the World-Class competition, age group gymnasts will test their own skills among others in their own level.
The competition includes Level 4-10 gymnasts. And what a treat it is for the age group gymnasts! All age group participants are welcome to participate in the World-Class march-in to welcome the international athletes.
At the completion of awards, there is an autograph session followed by the ever-popular Friendship Classic Party where gymnasts can dance the night away with their teammates and new friends.
After a great weekend, international delegations are taken to New York City on Monday for a day of sightseeing in the Big Apple before heading home.

Gymnastics World Cup Premiere in Iran

Hosted by 'Iranian Gymnastics Federation'

This years first world cup event of artistic gymnastics helds in the Iranian capital Tehran coming weekend. It's the first time that such an event takes place in this country.
The Iranian Gymnastics Federation is the host, but for men's competition only.
It's a tournament of 'B category' and from Wednesday on athletes from 17 countries trained in Tehran, already.
Among of them are for instance are the Dutch world champion on rings, Yuri van Gelder and the bars and high bar champions Mitja Petkovsek and Aljaz Pegan from Slovenia ...
The finals will held in Tehran on Saturday, part II on Sunday ...

The US-American Gymnastics Magazine International Gymnast' reported, that the competition, for men only, became political when approximately 250 female spectators were reportedly removed by Iranian security.
Media outlet 'Iran Focus' reported that hundreds of female spectators were forcefully removed from the Azadi stadium. As they were forced out, a number began to chant slogans against gender inequality of Iran.
Lengthy delays, caused by judges who were not familiar with the new Code, were also reported.

After the promise of the Rumanian world champion Marian Dragulescu nearly all the Melbourne's world champions will start at the Cottbus world cup '30. Turnier der Meister' at the end of March - only the Chinese pommel horse champ Xiao will missing there...
Also the three times Olympic Champion Catalina Ponor will be on top of the strong Rumanian delegation...

Ponor working to get back on track
Even though Ponor and her coach have put serious thought into giving up her Olympic career at the end of last year, at the beginning of 2006, Ponor reconsidered. 'We only started training on January 9 and I am very happy with the way things are going,' said Matei Stanei, her home coach in Bukharest.
Catalina Ponor's coach declared, the gymnast has started training on her vault event too, besides her regular beam and floor events, in order to help the Romanian team at the upcoming European Championship in Volos, Greece, at the end of April.
'She thinks she could obtain a high score in vault too,' Stanei said. The coach declared he was pleased by the way the gymnast's preparation is progressing, even though her training sessions only started three weeks ago.
'We were both about 80 percent sure of quitting. Then Catalina came to me and said she wanted to go on. Of course, I couldn't have done anything else but stand by her side,' the coach said.
<< Catalina Ponor is currently training at the 'Lia Manoliu' Sports Complex in Bucharest. According to her coach, she currently weights 53.7 kilograms, measuring 1.60 meters in height. 'We have decided it would be best for her to lose an extra 1.5 kilograms before the Europeans in April,' Stanei concluded.
So the participation at the Cottbus world cup in March will be an important step to the Europeans on month later.

A gymnast used in the marketing campaign for London's 2012 Olympic bid has been forced to quit the sport because of a lack of funding.
<< Ben Brown, who was pictured vaulting the 'Gherkin Tower' in the campaign, is now working full-time in a bank.
'It's been on the cards for a while,' he told BBC Radio Five Live. 'I've had to give up the sport because there's a huge lack of funding. I'm not able to train six hours a day, six days a week, without any income.'


Brown says there is no way he can continue to train while he is working full-time: 'It's just not feasible. When you've been at work all day, by the time you get to the gym it's not really worth it. Your mind's not on it and you're tired. If you want to do it properly, you have to focus and concentrate for the duration of the session, which can be six hours.
We train in the school hall at the moment in Sutton. It's not the ideal environment - we haven't even got full-time access and need new equipment.
We're not asking for much but anything would help and hopefully spur me on and persuade me to go the Olympics.'
No-one from British Gymnastics was available to talk to BBC Sport about the story on last Thursday.
But Matthew Crawcour, a spokesman for UK Sport, said Brown did not qualify for its funding: 'We run a world-class performance programme and work exclusively with athletes who have a world ranking,' he said.
'That's not the case with Ben to be honest. He competed at the World University Games last year and finished 52nd.'

A spokesperson for London 2012 said it was not embarrassed to have used Brown in its advertising campaign for the Olympic bid.

Grant Golding leads Canadian s Commenwealth Team

Grant Golding, will make his third Games...!

The XVIII. Commenwealth Games 2006' will held from March 15 - 26 in Mebourne, Australia. The gymnastics competitons will take place at the Rod Laver Arena, the venue of the last artistic worlds last year.
The Canadian Men’s Artistic Team, which took home silver in the team event in Manchester, will aim to better its efforts in Melbourne and knock off the strong British team and all other challengers to claim prime position on the medal podium....
The five member team includes four gymnasts from Calgary, led by Grant Golding, who will make his third Games appearance after finishing first in the All Round competition at the Commonwealth Games team trials.
Golding’s two-day total score of 177.40 points edged out Nathan Gafuik of Calgary, who came second with 176.20. Adam Wong of Calgary fills the third slot at 174.70 and David Kikuchi of Halifax came in fourth at 173.00.

Olympic champion Kyle Shewfelt of Calgary will have a chance to defend his two gold medal wins from Manchester, grabbing the fifth spot on the team for his outstanding performances on Floor and Vault and also posting the second best score on High Bar.
Men’s high performance director for Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique, Jeff Thomson said the team for Melbourne looked extremely strong.
'The guys didn’t miss anything,' he said. 'There’s a lot of experience and the younger guys like Nathan and Adam showed once again they belonged to compete alongside the very best.'
And in the Women’s Artistic trials, Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs completed her first All Round competition since October and placed first.
Hopfner-Hibbs, who enjoyed a breakthrough season internationally by finishing 10th on Bars at the 2005 World Championships before suffering from an injury late in the year which left her unable to complete her floor routine, placed first in the Trials rankings with 71.050 points.

Alyssa Brown was second at 68.700, while Gael Mackie was third, ahead of Brittney Habbib and Jenna Kerbis, with all five earning a nomination to the team.
'It feels great to make the team,' Hopfner-Hibbs said. 'I’ve worked really hard especially with the new code of points. It’s not so much the new code is challenging but we were interested to see how it would all play out.'

Brown (< photo, left), who finished second, was tied with Hopfner-Hibbs after the opening round of competition, and said the Games was a big step forward. 'Except for the beam, my second day was a lot better and I was really pleased to see my vault routine go so well,' she said. 'We don’t have any major events until the Games so there’s some time to fine tune our routines.' Gymnastics will kick off at the Rod Laver Arena with competition in the team Artistic events from 16 – 18 March, before apparatus finals on 20 – 21 March.

Men and Women artistic judges from all corners of South Africa attended the women's Brevet & International Judges Courses, was held in Bothas Hill (near Durban) and the men's course was held in Centurion last week.
Now the next F.I.G. women's artistic gymnastics Brevet Course take place in Swakopmund Namibia from the 19th to the 24th February 2006.
Agneta Göthberg from Sweden will be the course instructress.
The first International Judging Courses
in Artistic Gymnastics for the New Year was opened in Lilleshall (GBR) for the Ladies on January´11 followed by the Men on Jan. 12.
The Women's Course was led by the FIG delegate Donatella Sacchi (ITA) and the Men's by Istvan Karacsoni (HUN), both members of the respective Technical Committees of the FIG.
It has provoked enormous interest in view of the introduction of the new FIG International Code of Points from 1st Jan. 2006. Course Assistants for Women are Lyn Fairbrother and Avril Spriggs while Andy Tombs, Eddie Van Hoof and Simon Moor assist Mr Karacsoni on the Men's side.

The three days lectures have been followed by Exams.
Some great British performers from the past (James May and Barry Collie) and the present (Ross Brewer), all three Commonwealth Games Champions and World and European gymnasts - took part in the Course.

The organizers of the coming world cup in Germany, the 30th anniversary of 'Turnier der Meister 2006' in Cottbus, registered the entries of US gymnasts Alexander Artemev (Lakewood, Calif.) and Sean Golden (Houston/ Tex.).
Artemev was the pommel horse winner of the 2005 American Cup and placed second in Cottbus last year.

Milano-Pro-Sport wins another Sponsorship Deal with British Gymnastics

At a Staff Meeting on Tuesday 7th February 2006, held at the Headquarters of British Gymnastics at Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire, a new 7-years Sponsorship contract with “Milano-Pro-Sport” was officially announced in the presence of the Company’s Managing Director Mr. Paul Pendergest, and the BG Chief Executive Officer Mr. Alan Sommerville...
Following its meteoric growth since “Milano-Pro-Sport” was launched in September 1991, the company established itself as one of the world’s major players in the sport...
In 1996 “Milano-Pro-Sport” won its first contract to supply the British Gymnastics National Squads, and with their continuous support British Gymnastics has achieved huge progress establishing itself in the first division of the world across the majority of the gymnastics disciplines.
