Eileen Langsley Receives Her Award!

At the FIG Congress 2002 in Athens (Greece) it was announced that Eileen Langsley (Gymnastics Photographer Extraordinaire) had been awarded with Honorary Member of the FIG.
This well deserved and exquisite award was also accompanied by an elegant Longines watch.
Due to personal health and family health problems, it was not possible to make the Award in 2003, but on Friday, 16th January John Atkinson (FIG TC President and EC Member) was able to make the Award on behalf of Prof. Bruno Grandi and the FIG at Eileen and husband Gerry’s beautiful Derbyshire home.

Eileen - successful in action for a very long time!

'Shooting the gymnastic scompetitions in Sydney was one of my best working experiences for the FIG', said Eileen.
'The conditions there were great and the Aussies terrific to work with, but best of all I felt I was getting some of the best images of my career at a time when I was getting to the end of it'.
Eileen’s incredibly artistic approach to sport in general and Gymnastics in particular , combined with knowledge and technical skills, have won her a number of top professional awards:
- in 1982 she won the AIPS/Adidas International Sports Photo competition and was a prize-winner for five consecutive years;
- In 1986 she was winner of the Sports Picture of the Year).
Above all, however, remains the unanimous recognition, love and respect, of the Gymnastics family worldwide, towards Eilleen Langsley.

Austrian President Mag. Franz Fetti passed away..!

With great sadness the Austrian Gymnastics Federation OEFT pronounced, that its President, Director Magister Franz Fetti passed away, suddenly and totaly surprising...!

Yesterday, Sunday, January the11th, the 57 years old Franz Fetti deceased by a cardiac infarction, while he took a walk in his hometown Korneuburg, where he worked as a Dirctor of a big Austrian School Center.....
With great sadness, also the big international gymnastics family noticed this sorrowful loss!

Fetti, opening the UEG Congress in Vienna 2003

FIG Press Release: Coaches: On your Marks....!

Today the International Gymnastics Federation F.I.G published a turn of press releases in occasion of the successful issue of the third level of the new 'Gymnastics Academy'
To the very first time the FIG relegated brevets to 11 women and 14 men, which have finished the education successfully...

The occasion was the awarding of the first official FIG coaching brevets to 11 women and 14 men, who had just completed their training program at the FIG’s very new Academies of Gymnastics.
For the first time, the smartest coaches were gathered around the same table to effectively sanction the FIG Academies’ program. This is a victory for President Grandi, the initiator of this project, as well as for gymnastics and sports overall. The concept of the FIG Academies grew out of Professor Grandi’s conviction that only competent and highly qualified individuals, holding a recognized diploma bestowed exclusively by the FIG, should be entrusted with the training of gymnasts.
Professor Grandi further remarked, 'As President of the FIG, I am responsible for the mental and physical well-being of all active gymnasts. Their good health is too precious to be put in the care of inexperienced hands and exposed to unnecessary risks with catastrophic consequences. I know what I am talking about, since I too was a gymnast and a coach.'FIG brevets are awarded upon completion of a degree program, which leads the candidates through the three increasingly more difficult levels of an academic curriculum.
This multidisciplinary program essentially includes biomechanics, psychology, law, and medicine. This program rewards talented coaches and brings about a new era in the teaching and monitoring of athletes. Above all, the direction chosen by the FIG signals to the international sports community that the International Federation of Gymnastics is determined to fight against charlatans and is resolved to protect its gymnasts by emphasizing the important function performed by the coach.

The FIG Hands Out Its First Coaching Certificates.
For a Safe Practice of Gymnastics! Moutier, December 22, 2003: --- The introduction of the Level III Academy and the conferring of the first 25 coaching brevets mark a turning point in the history of the International Federation of Gymnastics. It is the beginning of a new era – an era that will refocus fundamental values on the gymnast and promote the scholastic virtues of high-quality education.
Coaches are at the core of the gymnasts’ development process. By training coaches, the FIG intends to break with the past and offer an institutional environment, where the safe practice of world-class gymnastics is taught.

At the end of the ceremony marking the distribution of the first FIG coaching brevets, a number of personalities from the inner-circle of gymnastics were pleased to offer their opinions:
- Professor Bruno Grandi, FIG President and IOC Member
'Large federations may survive because of their past and traditions, but until when? We can finally provide our 125 affiliated federations with a product that will provide them with universal pedagogical methods. It is now up to them to do their work.'

Gianfranco Marzolla

Octavian Belu, National Romanian Coach:
'A proactive approach was finally adopted for the development of the FIG. The coaches now have an environment, where they can grow and improve. I now understand the FIG’s true intentions and can fully recommend the Academies to everyone. For the first time in many years, I feel that I am not just a Romanian coach but an international one as well!'

9,000 Spectators saw a spectacular Olympic Gala!

In the late Sunday evening more than 9,000 enthusiastic spectators saw the traditional 'OLYMPIC GALA Flanders 2003' in the Sports Palais of the Belgian city Antwerp.
About 40 international stars of all gymnastics disciplines, Olympic, World, European or national champs celebrated a high-levelled program.
Among the participants was artistic gymnastics all-around World champion Paul Hamm from the USA...
This has also been the first public opportunity to present some new Olympic apparatus from the 'Pegases Company' Janssen&Fritsen...

(c) Photos: FIG photographer Volker MINKUS

Shortly before the venue had been used for a concert and the loudspeakers still were installed. This gave the opportunity for incredible sounds at the gymnastics event. The audience was especially impressed by the Russian tumblers.

A lot of cheers were also there for the beam routine of Romania's Catalina Ponor and the performance of the World Champion and 2nd of the World ranking-list Marian Dragulescu. After his performances in the tour of the German Gymnastics Federation, the 'DTB-Gala', this now has been his last performance for this year. He jokingly performed a vault without even touching the 'Pegases'.

Russian Group

In Germany they are already well-known within the gymnastics scence and now they also made the audience in Belgium laugh - the group 'Los Barros', with former international gymnasts Effing and Geiger, presented their funny show which has been well-liked also here among the various presentations of the different gymnastics disciplines. Belgium currently goes through an upswing in gymnastics, they traditionally have been strong in acrobatics.

A lot of attention has also been paid to the new apparatus of the 'Official Olympic Supplier Janssen&Fritsen' who showed them for the first time in public at the Olympic Gala in Belgium. The company, known as the 'Pegases company' was the first to present this new vaulting apparatus here in Belgium at the World Championships in Ghent:

The Belgian Günther Couckhuyt at new pommelhorse

That means in future the atheletes will have a choice between the two different types A and B...

More information on the new Janssen&Fristen apparatus, which already will be used at the Olympic Games, will follow shortly.
