Bernd Jäger: A gymnastics innovator turns 60!

" ... Flying was developed ...!"
A man turns 60 today, whose name is very important for the development of modern gymnastics:
Bernd JÄGER showed at the 18th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships 1974 in Varna a straddled somersault fwd. on high bar. This element was named "Jaeger"- somersault. It was the first flight element in history and after it followed a development of many others on high bar.

At the European Championships 1977 in Vilnius followed the "Deltchev"-somersault by Stoyan Deltchev. One year later at the World Championships Eberhard Gienger showed the piked variation of it, which was called "Gienger"- somersault...
.
At that point of time when on high bar except for the "Lissitzki-bridge" no larger elements with loosing the grip and no somersaults were presented, Bernd Jäger's coach Richard Karstedt in Potsdam had the idea to transfer the "Janz roll", which was presented by the Olympic Champion 1972 (Munich) Karin Janz on uneven bars during her gold routine, to the high bar.
It was hard work for one year and in September 1974, shortly before the World Championships in Varna, the 22-year-old presented the element for the first time at a dual meet against Switzerland in Altstätten.
Five weeks later at the World Championships in Bulgaria Bernd Jäger narrowly missed a medal on parallel bars and then wanted to risk everything on high bar, ...his new element worked well...but then the he fell on the "old" double somersault with 1/1 turn dismount.
Eberhard Gienger (West Germany) became World Champion and Wolfgang Thüne, who trained together with Jäger in Potsdam, won the silver medal.

Bernd Jäger coaching in Rinteln

In the middle of the 90ies he received an offer from the Finish team at the Tournament of Masters in Cottbus to work in Finland as a coach to develop a team for the Olympic Games 2000. Half a year after he started working there Jani Tanskanen won a gold medal on high bar.
"Jani of course already was able to do the elements when I came in March 1997. His problem mainly was his self confidence. We then changed the routine in a way that suited him and worked with him on his mental strength."
However, the Finish team didn't compete well at the World Championships 1999 in Tianjin and missed the qualification for the Olympic  Games 2000 in Sydney. "Anyway my contract lasted only until 2000", said Bernd Jäger, who after the silver medal at the1998 European Championships then after the 2000 European Championships returned to Potsdam.
Since March 2001 the former head coach of the top club in Potsdam and then national coach in Finland (1997 - 2000) now works at the club "VT Rinteln". He coaches all age-groups from children to adults and some of his gymnasts are quite successful. His wife, a former teacher at Potsdam's sports school, now works in the finance department of the club and takes care of the development of the club members.

Their three children don't live at home anymore and are successful in their lives: Daughter Andrea (43) lives in New York and works in the management of "Colgate & Palmolive". In addition to her, there are two sons Daniel (40) and Matthias (30).

29th DTB-CUP 2011: Nogomura (JPN) wins men s World Cup / Russia with a victory in the women s team final

The 29th DTB-Pokal 2011 today presented its' highlight: In the World Cup tournament of the men the title suprisingly went to the Japanese "newcomer" Shogo Nogomura. With the score of 88.431 he narrowly remained in front of Germany's Marcel Nguyen (88.332) and Daniel Purvis (GBR / 87.931).
On the remaining ranks 4 - 8 followed Mykola Kuksenkov (UKR), Emin Garibov (RUS), Rafael Martinez (ESP), Samuel Hunter (GBR) and Germany's Philipp Boy.

Philipp Boy, the two-time all-around Vice-World-Champion and top-favourite for the title in Stuttgart, lost all chances on a medal with a fall on high-bar after which he could not finish his routine. Luckily, however, he seems to have remained without a serious injury.

After the World Cup of the men followed the women's team final. The victory went to the team from Russia in front of Australia and Germany and the fourth place was reached by the Netherlands.

The medalists of the Men's World Cup

The course of the competition:
The competition started on floor in an order which could be expected. Purvis (15.166) in front of Boy (14.800) and Nguyen (14.400). However, it then continued differently, the expected European battle between the European Champion and Vice- World Champion Philipp Boy, the leading gymnast in the World Cup- ranking and European Championships- bronze medalist Mykola Kuksenkov, Vice- European Champion Daniel Purvis and Marcel Nguyen got mixed-up:
On pommel horse it started well for Marcel Nguyen. However, then Philipp Boy followed with a fall and also for Mykola Kuksenkov it didn't work much better. He remained on the apparatus but showed several major insecurities during his routine. Also Daniel Purvis - on his 21st birthday - didn't manage to get through his routine without a fall!
The youngest competitor in the field, 18-year old Shogo Nonomura, the Japanese gymnast from the city Chiba, took the chance. In the first half of the competition he managed to climb from the third place via the second rank to the top after rotation three on rings. Technical elegance has always been a trademark of Japanese gymnastics and in many ways this young gymnast already reminds of Kohei Uchimura.
On vault Marcel Nguyen managed to continue his good competition with a Kasamatsu with 1 1/2 twists. He remained on the second place behind Nonomura. However, Philipp Boy fell back further in the ranking due to a fall on the landing of his handspring - double somersault fwd. Also on parallel bars he had to fight through his routine (14.833) and didn't manage to get higher than the 7th place before the last rotation. Marcel Nguyen showed all of his experience in his routine on parallel bars - although it was clearly audible that he touched the bar with his foot on a giant it could hardly be seen and he managed to continue with his routine well and to present his remarkable full-in dismount!

This was a moment of shock for the audience in Stuttgart! It took a moment but then Philipp Boy managed to slowly get up and shortly afterwards it was published that it doesn't seem to be a serious injury. This situation showed once again that gymnastics is a risky kind of sports!

In the end Daniel Purvis managed to secure himself the bronze medal with 14.533 on high-bar narrowly in front of Mykola Kuksenkov. Germany's Marcel Nguyen kept his nerves together and managed to get through his high bar routine without major mistakes, though with insecurities in the execution (14.733). After his routine he was celebrated by the audience in Stuttgart for his second place!

Finally the 18-year-old Shogo Nonomura from Japan put his first exclamation point in his international career on the senior level. In a close decision (one tenth ahead of the silver medalist Nguyen) he managed to win this World Cup tournament!

TODAY: Chinese victory in Women s World Cup at the DTB-Cup / Russian men win team event

Today the third A-World Cup of the new series created by the FIG in 2011 has started with the women's all-around. After the American Cup in March in Jacksonville and the Grand Prix in Glasgow (April) now the 29th DTB-Cup in the venue "Porsche-Arena" in Stuttgart is being presented.

The Women's World Cup in Stuttgart has ended with the expected victory by China's HUANG, Qiushuang (58.032). The second place suprisingly was reached by Germany's Kim BUI (54.732), who only recently was included in the entry field to replace the injured Elisabeth Seitz. Yulia INSHINA from Russia narrowly secured herself the bronze medal (54.432) in front of Lauren Mitchell from Australia. On the places 5 - 8 follow Giulia Steingruber (SUI), Marlies Rijken (NED), Nadine Jarosch (GER) and Emily Little (AUS).

In the following final of the men's team event the Russian team won the gold medal in front of Great Britain, Germany and Switzerland.

Since more than a decade SPIETH Gymnastic

    The winner in Stuttgart 2011:
    HUANG, Qiushuang (CHN)

And it could be seen again - the audience in Stuttgart which is already known for its' enthusiasm.
"Although the intention of the FIG - to bring together the World-best all-arounders in the new World Cup series - could not be realised: It nonetheless was a World Cup - worthy event today", said GYMmedia-correspondent Ronny Ziesmer. "Good gymnastics was presented and it was an exciting competition. However, China's Huang, Qiushuang was the only one to present truely World-class performances. This was also underlined by the fact that she won the event more than three points ahead of her competitors!"

At the end of the year and only a few weeks after the highlight, the World Championships in Tokyo, it was obvious that the competitors are tired. Most of the participants showed a reduced content of difficulty - but this might also be a reason for only very few instabilities in today's performances. Especially convincing was the motivated performance by Germany's Vice- national champion Kim Bui. She replaced Germany's national champion Elisabeth Seitz who had to cancel her participation due to an injury only a few days before the event. Kim Bui is an experienced gymnast and due to this managed to get well also through difficult situations during her routines.

Other participants, like Nadine Jarosch, were already back into their daily lives after the World Championships. The 16-year-old German still was busy with a written test at school yesterday! Also Australia's Lauren Mitchell has to return to her home country right after the competition: The student of biomedical sciences  has to be back at university for an exam which absolutely can't be postponed anymore! Like other competitors also she didn't manage to show her top performances today.
However, also this belongs to the life of the gymnasts and shows that not always only the grade of perfection of the performances an be judged.
Already before it was known that it would not be realised to see the top-8 all-arounders in the women's field in Stuttgart.

Nadia COMANECI: A legend turns 50!

The following was told by her mother Stefania:
Nadia has always been a wild child. She was climbing on trees, riding her trike with a lot of speed and played football with the boys. For gymnastics she was discovered on February 25th 1968 in the gym in Onesti. Her first coaches were Bela and Marta Karoly. With them she stayed until the top of her career. On September 15th 1969 Nadia COMANECI reached the second place in her first gymnastics competition. One year later she became the local champion in the area. On December 5th 1971 she became Romanian national champion in her age-group. Finally on May 3rd 1975 she became a fan's favourite in the international World of gymnastics when she became European Champion in Skien/Norway. The highlight of her career took place on July 21st 1976. In Montreal she became Olympic Champion in the all-around. Five teams she got the dream score of 10.00.

Today the mother of a son and wife of the Olympic Champion in gymnastics Bart Connor in den USA belongs to the 100 most known women World-wide - and in her former home country Romania she has been a star for a long time already!
    (hjz)
She was only 14 years old when she won three gold medals at the Olympic Games in 1976 (uneven bars, beam, all-around).
Two more followed at the Games 1980 in Moscow (beam, floor). In addition to that the gymnast who was born in Romania became a two-time World Champion and won 9 European Championship-titles.

In 1981 Nadia Comaneci ended her career. She studied physical education at university and became a coach for younger gymnasts.
In 1989 she escaped from Romania to the USA where she married the Olympic Champion in gymnastics Bart Conner.
(>> More information - in German only - can be seen also in the interview of the newspaper "WELT-Online")

Her birthday on November 12th is being shared with the one from another international gymnastics legend:

    GYMfamily Event29th DTB-Cup 2011: A-World Cup with innovations

On the following weekend the third event of the new World Cup series 2011 will be held in the venue "Porsche-Arena" in Stuttgart. The series will then end on the last November weekend (26th/27th) in Tokyo.

After the American Cup in March in Jacksonville and the Grand Prix in Glasgow (April) now again eight of the best all-arounders in the World will compete at the 29th DTB-Cup 2011. The main World Cup competitions will take place on Saturday for the women and on Sunday for the men.

In the men's field the main competitors for Vice-World Champion Philipp BOY (GER) will be the 4th-ranked of the 2011 World Championships Daniel PURVIS (GBR) and the 7th-ranked Mykola KUKSENKOV (UKR). Also Germany's second competitor Marcel NGUYEN (GER) has the chance to reach a top position.

Since more than a decade SPIETH Gymnastic
    - also since 1983 official supplier of the DTB-Cup -
supports the World-wide GYMmedia-reporting in all gymnastics disciplines!

Philipp BOY, the current Vice-World champion in the all-around is the top favourite in the Porsche-Arena. With a victory, he could get a lot closer to the current leading gymnast of the ranking list, Mykola Kuksenkow (UKR) - however, it's a tough competition and the daily form will be decisive ...!

The World Cup-entry field of the Women
is a lot more "widely spread" than it was planned with the new mode of the World Cup Series. The plan was to have the top 8 all-arounders of the previous World Championships in the entry field. However, none of the top-ranked gymnasts of the last World Championships in Tokyo will compete in Stuttgart and from the top-10 of the World Championships Rotterdam 2010 only the 6th-ranked Lauren MITCHELL and the 4th-ranked HUNG, Qiushuang (CHN; photo on the left) will be present.

With the 5th place at the 2011 World Championships the gymnast from China also is the top-ranked gymnast in Stuttgart this year.

Behind her follow  Lauren MITCHELL as 8th - and then already the two German gymnasts Nadine JAROSCH (10th) but not Vize-European Champion Elisabeth SEITZ (11th), because she failed after an injury, so the German Vice champion Kim BUI will start at this event  for the German hosts!

Kim BUI (GER), the German Vice-All-around champion and European bronze medallist on bars will start in this world cup event, because Elisabeth Seitz injured herself only a few days before.

Movement in the World of gymnastics
    ________________________________
At all times the organisers in Stuttgart had innovative ideas: At first the DTB-Cup in 1983 took place in the "classic style" with a men's competition. One year later a women's event was added.
Since 1993 as Grand Prix event only the best gymnasts per apparatus were decided and a few years later the new idea of the "winners final" was created. - A direct duel between the two best gymnasts per event within only a few minutes.
At the turn of the millenium the top events were put together as "Great Four". In addition to the DTB-Cup these were the events France Telecom as well as the Grand Prix's in  Cottbus and Glasgow.
Since 2002 a larger World Cup series was established which created a big amount of champions on individual apparatus.
With the idea to strengthen the all-around as the core piece of modern gymnastics in 2008 the series of the "Champions Trophy" was added.
From this one the FIG has developed a new World Cup series of 4 events, the A- World Cup for the best all-arounders among the top gymnasts of the World.

For the gymnast, who since his accident during training before the Olympic Games 2004 is quadriplegic and sits in a wheelchair, this was another big goal on the way into a fulfilling life after already having started his foundation "Alliance of hope" and having participated in the Berlin Marathon with a handbike.

is what he once mentioned in an interview as his guiding principle. And with the way he spends his life, he certainly is a role model for this principle...
    Ronny Ziesmer:
"I'd like to thank the representatives of my university "'Hochschule Lausitz", the whole teaching staff and tutors and especially the "centre for handicapped-accessible studies". WIthout them I would not have been able to succesfully finish my studies!

I also would like to thank
Prof. Dr. Hans-Werner MÜLLER from the university "Heinrich-Heine-Universtät Düsseldorf'" as well as the Chairman of our foundation council, Mr. Rüdiger GOLL of the company 'Industrie Consult International M&A'GmbH' for their expertise and understanding for my special situation.

Ronny Ziesmer, Vice- World Champion Philipp Boy - both SC Cottbus

Mobility is everything for a quadriplegic person in a wheelchair! Especially the 'branch management for handicapped vehicles of the Mercedes-Benz sales department, Berlin' has helped me through providing an exceptional car. With it I managed to reach a grade of self-dependance which I did not expect before.
When I was working as expert for the TV-station ZDF together with
Christoph HAMM at the Olympic Games in Bejing 2008 I noticed how strongly the colleagues of the TV-station ZDF were prepared for my special situation. Through this they enabled me a good way to hold the contact to my sports discipline gymnastics!
In the end I would also like thank the sports journalist, and former ZDF- commentator and today's chief editor of GYMmedia,
Eckhard HERHOLZ, who is at my side as media consultant since my accident in 2004
I would like to encourage everyone who decides to give a donation now: It is never too late for showing solidarity and:
    - There is no way to give up!"
    Yours Ronny Ziesmer .

    6. Philipp Boy (GER)                          - PB - 14.566 - 74.464
    7. John Orozco (USA)                     - PB - 15.366 - 74.298
    8. Cyril Tommasone (FRA)               - HB -14.666 - 74.232
    9. Danel Leyva (USA)                      - PB - 15.333 - 73.740
    10. Flavius Koczi (ROU)                    - FX - 15.366 - 73.665
    11. Kim Seungil (KOR)                       - FX - 14.466 - 73.623
    12. Marcel Nguyen (GER)                 - HB - 14.466 - 73.598

    * UCHIMURA (JPN) - parallel bars, he has to start - and reaches the highest score of the day on this apparatus, 5 flight elements! = 15.566
    * BOY (GER) - remains concentrated after the perfect performance by his competitor - a large step on the landing of his dismount but the rest goes well, - (6.3) = 14.566; - 7 tenths less than in the qualification...
    * PURVIS - parallel bars, the British gymnast who is ranked slightly in front of Boy after the 4th rotation shows a routine which is a bit more elegantly presented than the one from the German before - (6.4) = 15,200;
    * NGUYEN (GER) - high-bar, starts with an eagle-swing which is not that well executed, but gets better throughout the routine - (6.5) = 14.466. A difficult routine but he leaves the judges too much room for deductions due to problems in the execution!

    * YAMAMOTO (JPN) - parallel bars - (6.2) = 14.966 - and he remains on the second place!
    * OROCZO (USA) - parallel bars - a top routine with high difficulty = 15.533 - and he catches up, he's on the 7th place before the last rotation.

    * KUKSENKOV (UKR) and BELYAVSKYI (RUS)  steadily improve and can be found on the ranks 4 and 5 before the last rotation!

UCHIMURA leads in an amazing way. On high-bar he wouldn't be able to make that many mistakes in order to loose the gold medal!
