NG, Shu wei - back as a coach to Malaysia

Former national artistic gymnast of Malaysia, NG, Shu Wai, has become a hot property again after completing a three-month coaching stint in Hungary.
The Malaysian Selangor Amateur Gymnastics Association (SAGA) have made their move to hire the talented Shu Wai as the coach for their state gymnastics programme. His best effort was winning silver medals in the floor exercise at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester (2002) and Melbourne (2006). He also benefited from training stints in China and was on track to represent Malaysia for the second time at the Olympics in Beijing last year before he was booted out after going AWOL from the training camp.

PREVIEW: 2nd Pre-Olympic Youth Cup 2009 ** GYMfamily Event

On the weekend of 22/23 May the Rheinischer Turnerbund (GER) will be continuing the tradition it began last year of holding a high-level international competition for female junior gymnasts.
Invitations are therefore now being issued to the "Second Pre-Olympic Youth Cup 2009" in Bergisch Gladbach.
The main competitions on 23 May are all-around contests for the 12/13 and 14/15 age groups and also for the Elite category. A remarkable feature is the unusually high amount of prize money for a junior competition! This competition is particularly intended for the formation of the youth and junior squads for upcoming major events ...

Czech Olympian Ferdinand DANIS celebrates 80th Birtday

Renowned Czechoslovakian gymnast Ferdinand DANIS celebrated his 80th birthday on January 1, 2009!
Danis is one of the most well-known and decorated gymnasts of Czechoslovakia.

Born on the first day of 1929 in the small town of Opatova - in modern day Slovakia - young Ferdinand first discovered gymnastics in the Czech Republic region of Moravia.
He was quickly tagged for his natural talent, particulary by coaches from the ATK and Dukla Prague Clubs.

Walter LEHMANN - Swiss ex-World Champion gymnast has turned 90!

In his hometown of Richterswil in Switzerland,  Walter LEHMANN - one of the most successful Swiss gymnasts of the post-war period - celebrated his 90th birthday on 13th January.
The two-times winner of the Schweizer Kunstturntage (1942/'45) gained three silver medals at the 1948 Olympics - in the team event, in the overalls and on high bar.
At the World Championships in Basle in 1950 he enjoyed his greatest success, winning both the 12-piece overall competition and on rings, as well as three bronze medals (pommel horse, vault, high bar).

In 1945 at the world-famous tennis stadium Roland Garros, Walter Lehmann had emerged from his  first international competition against France as the overall winner, and he participated in his last international competition - a match between Switzerland and Hungary - in 1954 at the age of 35...

Lehmann, on P-bars in the early 1950s

in 1972 he was awarded the title of World's Best Judge.
When he retired in 1984 Lehmann withdrew from all his positions. «I went from constantly working to doing nothing», he says. A neighbour recommended that he should buy a book entitled «Learning to Grow Old», since otherwise he might fall into a black hole, so to speak. «I bought the book, but I still haven't opened it.» He has never been bored. Today he likes jazz, does crossword puzzles and listens to folk music.
Until a year ago he travelled a lot, accepted various invitations and cultivated his many contacts with other gymnasts and clubs. Now, however, he suffers from pain in his knees and hips, so that he can no longer do so much.

In Poland: A Formula 1 pilot - followed by Gymnast Leszek Blanik!

Ten top Polish athletes were named best sportspeople of the year in the annual ranking organised jointly by Polish "Sports Review" daily and the state Polish television TVP.  It has been the 74th edition of this popularity rating.
2008 was the year of Robert Kubica, the only Pole in Formula 1 races and it came as no surprise that almost one hundred thirty thousand Poles voted him the best athlete of the year.
He was followed by Olympic gold medalist in male artistic gymnastics Leszek Blanik who received over one hundred twenty one thousand votes (!!) while the third in the ranking was gold medalist in shot put from Beijing, Tomasz Majewski.

Gunter Schönherr - new coach for the German junior team

The Deutsche Turner-Bund reports that from the start of 2009 the ex-Cottbus coach Gunter SCHÖNHERR has taken over as senior coach for the national junior artistic gymnastics squad (men).
The post had been vacant since last spring, shortly before the Junior European Championships in Lausanne, when the DTB unexpectedly dismissed his prededessor Siegfried Wüstemann (Berlin).

As part of the DTB's consolidation endeavours, he moved to Stuttgart in 2003 where he worked with the national team gymnasts Thomas Andergassen, Robert Juckel and Marcel Nguyen, among others. In the future he will continue to focus on close collaboration with the German senior team coach Andreas Hirsch.
It is intended that Schönherr, a native of Pockau, will initially hold the position of coach for the junior team until the end of 2012.
The Junior Olympics in Singapore and the Junior Europeans in Birmingham in 2010 will be among the main focal points of his work in this area.

... Personalities:Caroline Weber & Gabriel Rossi : Austria s Athletes of 2008

öft ---: During the two weeks up to the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, the  traditional voting procedures took place for the selection of theAustrian Gymnastics Federation's (ÖFT) "Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year". The result was determined by a combination of a jury consisting of prominent international experts and media representatives, on the one hand, and online fan voting in which thousands of votes were cast, on the other. The rhythmic gymnast Caroline Weber (V), who took part in the Olympic Games, and the 18-year old top-ranking artistic gymnast Gabriel Rossi (St) both won this vote for the first time ...

Caroline WEBER: ... The hard-working gymnast intends to 'press on' with her training!

Tense voting until the last minute on the men's side.
In the case of the male gymnasts, by contrast, the ÖFT vote for sportsman of the year was a close-run thing, with the top position changing several times during the voting procedures.
Despite gaining the majority of the fan votes, Marco Baldauf (V) just failed to make a hat-trick following his successes in 2004 and 2005 because the jury favoured the promising gymnast from Graz Gabriel Rossi.
The youngest Austrian artistic gymnastics all-around State Champion reacted by saying: "It's great. I hadn't expected that so many people would have held my performances in 2008 in such high regard. But it really was a particularly successful year. Now I have to do the Matura [advanced school-leaving qualification] – and then from the summer I can at last concentrate completely on my career as a professional gymnast!“
