WORLDCUP Cottbus 2007: Women s Apparatus Finals

The Tournament of Masters in Cottbus is over also in the women's field.
Fan Ye from China won the beam final with a perfect performance!
After winning on uneven bars on Saturday  Elsa Garcia from Mexico secured herself the gold medal on floor on Sunday. Adding her bronze medal from yesterday on vault, she now is the most succesful female gymnast at this tournament!
On Saturday, March 24th the first women's final (vault) in the "Lausitz Arena" in Cottbus was won by the 31-years old Oksana Chusovitina.
The former Uzbek is now a resident of Cologne, starting for Germany.
Winner on uneven bars was the elegant young Elsa Garcia from Mexico.

Oksana Chusovitina --- went full of energy into the difficult HS – layout fwd. 1/1 turn and needed a large step forward to secure the landing. Then followed Tsukahara 1 ½ twists, executed with a very good layout position, small hop to the side on the landing. And her two very difficult vaults brought her once again a victory on this apparatus!
The audience was thrilled by the Jurchenko 2/1 twists by Jade Barbosa - perfect! Her RO 1/2 turn - somersault fwd. piked was similarly perfect and she won the silver medal!

Olga Shcherbatykh --- started into this final with a good routine including a piked Jaeger and a double somersault fwd. dismount (small step to secure the landing).
Elsa Garcia thrilled the audience with her technically very well presented routine which she showed full of energy today! (straddled Stalder 1/1 turn on the lower bar, piked Jaeger, straddled Tkatchev, giant 1/1 turn, Pak ½ turn to lower bar, 1/1 turn – straddled Stalder, dismount double somersault fwd. tucked).
The Czech Republic presents itself as a very good uneven bars - nation at the moment! While she still had problems with a few elements during warm-up, now in the competition, Kristyna Palesova did very well in her routine which included 1 ½ turn on the higher bar, a high straddled Tkatchev and a double somersault fwd. tucked dismount.
Florica Leonida competed solidly and without major errors but with quite a few slight technical insecurities in her routine which included 1 ½ turn on the higher bar, a high straddled Tkatchev and a tucked full-in dismount.

... and on Sunday:
FINAL: BEAM
Irina Krasnyanska:
- she had to briefly secure the dismount with her hands and had 3 small wobbles during the routine before. But otherwise it was a great and technically very well presented routine! With 15.250 she sets a high mark already at the beginning of this final. She presented today: jump to clear straddle support to handstand in split position 1/1 turn – directly to clear pike support, RO – layout bwd, leap, jump to somersault fwd. tucked, ring jump, 1/1 spin with leg in horizontal, front aerial – sidewards somersault, leap series, double somersault bwd. piked dismount
Aluissa Lacusteanu:
The execution of her elements not as perfect as seen before at Irina Krasnyanska but she managed to get through her routine incl. FF- FF – layout bwd., Gainer-FF  – FF and FF – FF –double somersault bwd. tucked dismount well.
Fan Ye:
- a great routine!! Only one step to secure the landing of her dismount, otherwise perfect! - jumps on the beam, somersault fwd. tucked, sheep jump, ring jump, Rufolva (FF 1/1 turn to straddle sit), 1/1 spin with leg hold by the hand in 180º split position (perfectly executed today!), front aerial – somersault bwd. tucked, FF to straddle sit, somersault sidewards, ring jump – wolf jump, free cartwheel, dismount 2 1/2 twists.
Katja Abel:
- she continues with her succesful performances at this year’s Cottbus tournament! A wobble at her spin 1/1 turn with leg in horizontal, otherwise a good routine including FF – bwd. aerial, somersault bwd. tucked, leap 1/1 turn, leap – wolf jump, dismount somersault bwd. tucked with a stuck landing!
FINAL: FLOOR
Alina Kozich:
- very interesting choreography to a modern version of orientalic music, also the difficulties went well! - HS –double somersault fwd. tucked, HS – layout fwd. 2/1 twists – layout fwd., ring jump – leap 1/1 turn, 2/1 spin with leg in horizontal, RO 2 ½ twists – layout fwd. 1/1 turn (today however not completely in a layout position), RO – double twist, 2 ½ twists in the end.
Adela Sajn:
- until shortly before the end of her routine everything went well (including double somersault bwd. piked, RO – 1 ½ twists – layout fwd.), then unfortunately a major wobble on the difficult 3/1 spin in the end…
Jade Barbosa:
- here she had more luck than on beam! A unique choreography, today pefectly presented! Her elements include: tucked double arabian, 2 1/1 twists – somersault fwd. tucked and in the end a perfectly stuck double somersault bwd. piked.
Katja Abel:
- she showed a good routine including a double somersault bwd. piked, 2 ½ twists – somersault fwd. piked ½ turn and in the end a 2/1 twist with a stuck landing.
Olga Shcherbatykh:
- her music, a funny and modern version of Ukrainian folk music, was well liked by the audience. Also the dififculties went well - piked full-in, HS – double somersault fwd. tucked (small step to secure the landing), 2/1 spin with leg in horizontal, 2 ½ twists – layout fwd., cat leat 1/1 turn – leap 1/1 turn, double somersault bwd. piked – that was the lead at that point of time!
Elsa Garcia:
- small insecurities on her difficult 3/1 spin, otherwise a great routine! Very nice choreography which she presented very well - triple spin, double arabian tucked, tucked full-in, leap 1/1 turn, 2 ½ twists – layout fwd., double somersault bwd. piked. And she overtook Olga Shcherbatykh!

WORLDCUP Cottbus 2007: Men s apparatus Finals

With some remarkable performances the men's finals at the 31st Tournament of Masters have ended now.
Du, Weij won on vault with a very good performance! His team mate Teng, Haibin took the victory on parallel bars and with his thrilling routine on high-bar Vlasios Maras from Greece secured himself the gold medal in this final.
Yesterday the first final of the tourmanent on floor was won by the 22-year old Vadim Kuvakin (15,525) from Ukraine in front of Victor Rosa from Brazil (15.475) and Enrico Pozzo (ITA, 15.200)
The final on pommel horse was won by Krisztian Berki (HUN, 16,000) in front of the World Champion from 2003 Teng, Haibin (CHN, 15,925) and Jose Luis Fuentes (VEN, 15,450).
The victory on rings went to Regulo Carmona (VEN, 16,125). Andrea Coppolino (ITA, 16,075) followed on the second place and Oleksander Vorobyov (UKR, 15,975) won the bronze medal...

FINAL POMMEL HORSE
Fokin: ---
he started off this final with an overall quite well presented routine! His routine included Wu Guonian, Russian wendeswing 1080 degrees, flop and flop with Russian wendeswing, dismount reverse Stoeckli to handstand with 1/1 turn.
Mizutori: --- unfortunately he had a fall on the dismount and through that lost all chances on a front position... A pity because with his SV of 16.500 which was one of the highest in this final he certainly would have had chances for a medal.
Giraldo: ---a solidly presented routine but the highest difficulties were missing so he didn't manage to reach one of the top ranks in this final.
Kruykov: --- unfortunately he fell on the Thomas- circles, an element which is very well liked by the audience, so all his chances for a medal were gone.
Fuentes: ---The winner of yesterday's qualification showed all kinds of world-class elements today as well! Slight insecurities in some of his combinations led to a few deductions today but with his high start value he managed to win the bronze medal in this final.
Teng, Haibin: --- The World Champion from 2003 on this apparatus was also one of the highest favourites for the victory in this final. - And he presented a top performance including Flop Russian wendeswing 270 degrees, Russian wendeswing between the pommels and a sovereign dismount with reverse Stoeckli to handstand 1/1 turn. A very difficult routine which brought him the lead up to that point!

Krisztian Berki
follows Hungary's succesful tradition on pommel horse!

FINAL STILL RINGS
Irodotos: --- he showed very good strength elements, among them kip to swallow to inverted cross followed by uprise to support scale and Asarjan, unfortunately small problems on one of his swinging elements and a fall on his triple somersault bwd. dismount...
Hayami: --- also he ended his routine with a mistake on his dismount (layout full-in)... However, his strength elements were quite remarkable.
Vorobyov:  --- his dismount double somersault fwd. piked is extraordinary, unfortunately today he presented it with slight insecurities.
Rodrigues: --- also he tried a double somersault fwd. dismount but unfortunately with a fall today... Also small insecurities on his strength elements left the judges room for deductions.
Coppolino: --- he received small deductions for his dismount double layout which is only a C-element, however a D- element dismount would be required. He presented interesting swinging elements, e.g. the combination of Honma- uprise to swallow, Honma- uprise swung backwards to handstand and Jonasson to support scale. With this routine he secured the silver medal for himself!
van Gelder: --- a great routine - but just like in the qualification with a fall on his double somersault fwd. dismount. He ended up on the 4th place.
Balandin: --- the young 17-year old Russian managed a perfect combination of strength elements and swinging elements. Today he came through his routine very well and stuck his full in dismount. It's certainly necessary to remember the name Balandin for the future!

Regulo Carmona - first winner from Venezuela in Cottbus!

FINAL  VAULT
Vault is the first apparatus for the men on the second finals' day and the performances in the qualification gave hope for an exciting final!
- V. Kardashovs (LAT) kicked off the event with a Tsukahara 2/1 twists with slight insecurities on the landing. Following was a very high HS - double somersault fwd., however slightly overrotated.

31. TURNIER DER MEISTER 2007 >> MEN s Qualification rounds

Impressive field of top participants!

Altogether 100 athletes representing 39 nations took part in Friday's qualification rounds of the World Cup in the Lausitz Arena of Cottbus! It was a qualification marathone from 1 to 8 p.m. - this modus is not an act of advertisement for modern gymnastics!

The biggest rush was seen seen on pommel horse: 54 gymnasts were on the start lists there, 53 on parallel bars - and only eight spots for the final were available...!

Meanwhile the long qualification day has ended. Especially convincing were the performances on vault where a lot of very difficult vaults were presented!

- from Cottbus for GYMmedia: Lutz LANDGRAF; Photos: Volker MINKUS; Translation: Lisa WORTHMANN

*Boden / FLOOR
40 gymnasts participated in the qualification on floor. Overall a lot of instabilities could be seen. Especially the requirement to finish the routine with a D-element seemed to be a problem for many of the gymnasts. Dismounts like double Arabian tucked, triple twist, full-in or 2 ½ twists quite often led to problems with the landing or even falls. This was also the case during the routines of J. Wammes (NED) and Du Wie (CHN) who certainly were contenders for a spot in the final.
Many combined acrobatic series were presented. One of the most frequently presented ones was 1 ½ twists bwd. – layout 1/1 turn fwd. – layout 1 ½ twists fwd. Only rarely presented today was a double somersault fwd. tucked. A large amount of gymnasts also presented Thomas- circles which gives them a good opportunity to increase the SV of their routines.
Qualified fort he final are:
R. Selariu (ROU), G. da Silva (FRA), V. Rosa (BRA), S. Palgen (LUX), V. Kuvakin (UKR), E. Kosmidis (GRE), E. Pozzo (ITA) and M. Fahrig (GER)).

*Pauschenpferd / POMMELHORSE
The entry field on pommel horse was even bigger than on floor. 48 gymnasts tried to earn one of the 8 spots for the final.
One of the first favourites on this apparatus who participated in this final was the Vice World Champion of last year,  P. Sellathurai from Australia. He started strongly but then fell down on a flop. Nonetheless with his score of 14.95 he could hope for a spot in the final for quite a while since many other gymnasts also had difficulties. However, when the 38th gymnast in this field had ended his routine without mistakes it was clear that the dream of the final was over for Sellathurai.
Other favourites in this field like Teng. H (CHN), D. Popescu (ROU) and N. Kriukov (RUS) presented themselves confidently and showed that they are among the best gymnasts in the world on this apparatus. Krisztian Berki (HUN) also managed to qualify for the final. As usual he thrilled everyone with the great technique of his scissors.
Qualified for the final are:
Teng Haibin (CHN), Krisztian Berki (HUN), Daniel Popescu (ROM), Nikolai Kriukov (RUS), Kazuki Mizutori (JPN), Anton Fokin (UZB), J. Fuentes (VEN) and J. Giraldo (COL)
>> Qualification Pommel horse
*Ringe / RINGS
The audience couldn't believe it when Yuri van Gelder unfortunately fell on his dismount double somersault fwd. piked after an otherwise great routine full of perfect strength elements. Nonetheless he reached a SV of 17.2 and final score of 15.7 for his routine and qualified for tomorrow’s final on the second place.
The new judging regulations led to a greater variety of dismounts and more swinging elements were presented. In addition to the often performed layout full-in or double layout now also triple somersaults or double somersault fwd. were shown.
A few of the gymnasts also had the Guzconghi again in their program. A quite popular combination was Jonasson – Yamawaki – Honma uprise or giant. Nonetheless the strength elements are still dominating on rings and in the cases where any swinging elements were shown quite often technical insecurities could be seen.
Qualified for the final are:
Regulo Carmona (VEN), Yuri van Gelder (NED), A. Coppolino (ITA), A. Balandin (RUS), G. Irodotos (CYP), A. Vorobyov (UKR) und Yuto Hayamy (JPN)
>> Qualification results Still rings
* Barren / PARALLEL BARS
46 gymnasts fighted for a spot in the final. Very strong were the Chinese gymnasts, both gymnasts made it into the final. Remarkable was the performance of H. Teng. With 4 flight elements – giant – double somersault piked, giant - double somersault tucked, double somersault bwd. piked and 1 ½ somersault fwd. to support – and on top of that shoot-up to handstand and directly giant 1/1 turn he set a high limit for his fellow competitors! Only N. Kriukov (RUS) and V. Goncharov (UKR) managed to come close to his score of 16.00.
It’s great for the German hosts that Marcel  Nguyen managed to finish his routine with the very difficult full-in dismount securely and with this to reach the final as 6th. No other gymnast showed a dismount of a similar difficulty.
It 's still the case that there isn’t too much variety in the dismounts, only very few gymnasts take the risk of a double somersault fwd.. Quite popular combinations are shoot-up – handstand – giant double somersault piked and giant 1/1 turn followed by double somersault.

WORLD CUP: 31. TURNIER DER MEISTER 2007 >> Women s Qualification

Women's Qualification!
With 39 gymnasts the women's entry field is quite a bit smaller than the men's one.
The long qualification day is meanwhile over for the women. Quite a few insecurities could be seen but on the other hand also quite a few good routines were presented.

Especially convincing were the performances of young, upcoming talents like Daria Joura (AUS; 2x finals), Jade Barbosa (BRA; 3x finals) ), Elsa Garcia (MEX; 3x) and Aluissa Lacusteanu (ROM; 2x).

Also the Ukrainian Olga Sherbatykh reached three of the world cup finals (all except beam).

*Sprung / VAULT
The women kicked off this year’s Tournament of Masters quite well on vault. Although some of the participants in this qualification showed only relatively easy vaults, overall most of the performances were solid and the audience got to see only a few falls. Quite remarkable and not easy at all were the vaults of the leading gymnasts in this qualification!
Like the week before at the World Cup in Paris, two young talents from South America presented themselves very well – Jade Barbosa from Brazil showed a great Jurchenko 2/1 twists and a good RO – ½ turn – handspring somersault fwd. piked (small step on the landing) and Elsa Garcia from Mexico also presented her Jurchenko 11/2 twists and RO ½ turn – handspring – somersault fwd. piked very well.
Because of problems with the bad quality of the springboard the week before in Paris, Oksana Chusovitina (GER) arrived in Cottbus with a slight leg injury. Nonetheless she once again proved her class and won this qualification with her handspring – layout fwd. 1/1 turn and Tsukahara 1 ½ twists!
One of the fans' favourites at last year’s World Championships, Daria “Dasha“ Joura from Australia, also presented herself to the audience in Cottbus with her great smile. She had only slight problems with the rotation of her Jurchenko 2/1 twists (rotation not completely finished) but made the final easily as 6th.
Qualified for the final are:
Oksana Chusovitina (GER), Jade Barbosa (BRA), Olga Shcherbatykh (UKR), Elsa Garcia (MEX), Alina Kozich (UKR), Daria Joura (AUS), Enikö Korcsmaros (HUN) and Maria Parsantanian (GRE).
>> Qualification Vault
*Stufenbarren / UNEVEN BARS
On uneven bars things didn’t continue as well as on vault. The audience got to see many falls, only about 1/3 of the competitors in this field remained on the bars. That meant the judges had a lot of work to do and the qualification on this apparatus took a long time.
The falls of her fellow competitors however didn’t impress Fan Ye from China. She showed a remarkable routine with very nice Endo- combinations, giant fwd. 1/1 turn – piked Jaeger, Pak, nice Stalders and a 1/1 turn on the lower bar and double somersault bwd. piked dismount.
Despite a fall Irina Krasnyanska from Ukraine managed to win this qualification. Apart from the fall, she showed her interesting routine technically very well and now has another chance in tomorow’s final to prove that she can do it even better.
Dasha Joura from Australia started off well with a good Comaneci- salto, which she has added to her routine this year. Unfortunately then followed a fall from the higher bar… But she also will have another chance in tomorrow’s final.
Katja Abel from Germany showed a remarkable routine including straddled Stalder – 1 ½ turns on the higher bar, straddled Jaeger and a double somersault bwd. piked dismount. Ending up on rank 9 she narrowly missed the qualification for the final.
Qualified for the final are:
Irina Krasnyanska (UKR), Fan Ye (CHN), Jana Sikulova (CZE), Florica Leonida (ROU), Elsa Garcia (MEX), Olga Shcherbatykh (UKR), Daria Joura (AUS) and Kristyna Palesova (CZE)
>> Qualification Uneven bars
*Balken / BEAM
Also on beam quite some falls could be seen. However, nonetheless a few good routines were presented. Fan Ye from China once again with a very difficult routine, small wobble on her somersault fwd. tucked but otherwise she convinced especially through her nice turns and leaps (sheep jump, ring jump, 1/1 turn with the leg hold by the hand in 180º split position, ring jump – wolf jump).
Like shortly before on floor, another good performance today for Aluissa Lacusteanu (ROU) on beam. In her young age she already presents the difficulties (including ff – ff - layout bwd.) remarkably well. Only the dismount with double somersault bwd. tucked seems a little bit too “easy“ compared to the rest of the routine.
Katja Abel from Germany with another very good performance which brought her rank 3 in this qualification!
The beam World Champion from Aarhus 2006 Irina Krasnyanska (UKR) started off very well – in contrast to many of her fellow competitors who opt for “safety“ with an easy mount, she begins her routine with a jump to clear straddle support to handstand in split position 1/1 turn – directly to clear pike support! Unfortunately today shortly after this great mount a fall followed… But she managed to continue well and qualified for the final.
Further contenders for a spot in the final like Oksana Chusovitina, Dasha Joura or Alina Kozich also didn’t remain without falls today.
Qualified for the final are:
Fan Ye (CHN), Aluissa Lacusteanu (ROU), Katja Abel (GER), Irina Krasnyanska (UKR), Stefani Bismpikou (GRE), Adela Sajn (SLO), Jade Barbosa (BRA), Florica Leonida (ROU).
>> Qualification Balance Beam
*Boden / FLOOR
A bit more audience had arrived in the late afternoon when the women’s qualification on floor took place and so the atmosphere in the venue got better. A few very nice choreographies were presented but it was obvious during this qualification that it is still early in the season and that the gymnasts were not yet ready to cope with all the difficult elements in their routines properly, quite a few falls could be seen.
Elsa Garcia (MEX), who recently turned 17 years old, thrilled the audience with her charme and expression – but also the difficulties went well today! - triple spin, double arabian tucked, tucked full-in, leap 1/1 turn, 2 ½ twists – layout fwd., double somersault bwd. piked – 15.075!
The only 15-year-old Aluissa Lacusteanu from Romania proved that she certainly is able to continue with the successful Romanian tradition on floor. In her young age she still lacks a bit of impression but she managed to present all of her elements very well today – tucked full-in – 2 ½ twists – layout fwd., triple twist, leap – leap 1/2 turn, and in the end double somersault bwd. piked – 14.400.
Adela Sajn from Slovenia, already quite well-known for her expressive floor routines, presented herself once again very well today and so did also the 2 Ukrainians Alina Kozich and Olga Shcherbatykh. All three of them reached the final!
Qualified for the final are:
Elsa Garcia (MEX), Aluissa Lacusteanu (ROM), Olga Shcherbatykh (UKR), Alina Kozich (UKR), Kim Bui (GER), Jade Barbosa (BRA), Katja Abel (GER), Adela Sajn (SLO)

One week after the first World Cup event of the new series in Paris-Bercy (FRA) the second tournament will follow in Germany, the country which also hosts the Pre-Olympic World Championships this year in September in Stuttgart. The 2nd event of this year's World Cup series will be the traditional "TOURNAMENT OF MASTERS"  from March 23rd to 25th in the venue "Lausitz-Arena"
in Cottbus
.
Having taken place since 1972, the "Tournament of Masters" is now one of the oldest and most traditional events in artistic gymnastics. It is well liked by the participating gymnasts as well as by the audience especially because of its friendly and warm-hearted atmosphere
The organising team around tournament director Sylvio Kroll will once again prepare the best conditions for the gymnasts from all over the world so that they already now will be able to prepare well for the upcoming World Championships in Stuttgart from Sept. 1st to 9th.
By January 30th the organisers had already received entries from almost 200 gymnasts from 43 countries - maybe the Tournament of Masters record of 44 participating nations will be broken this year...?

First Australia, Canada and Portugal will go on the podium, followed at 1 pm local time by Rumania and the USA, at 4 pm by Italy, Ukraine, Greece.
The German team iss pleased with its place in the last group of the second day at 7 pm in the evening, together with Korea and Spain....!
...  on the horizontal bar - to date not the strongest piece of apparatus for the Chinese - the team showed a marked improvement since Aarhus, technically improved el-grip behaviour, swing forwards with a full or 1/2 turn ... only during the flight elements did some of the men seem a little hectic;
- improvement on floor also, in between times a bit of a shock, when CHEN, Yibin took rather a rough jolt on the neck after performing a 1 1/2 salto to roll fwd;
ZHOU, Kai shone with a 2 1/2 twist, immediately followed by salto forward with double turn!
- on pommel horse all six gymnasts were entirely up to scratch, performed as if they came from another galaxy, five out of the six should make the finals and even among these, the title holder XIAO, Qin is in a category of his own - if he has a rival, it is surely himself!!

... and otherwise:
- the Belgian Donna-Donny TRUYENS from Ghent performed surprisingly well on pommel horse, and it was once again amazing to see what good form the oldest participant of these WCh, the Norwegian Espen Janssen (38), has achieved for his 13th WCh participation since 1991!

- USA - The Americans are far removed from their standard of the Olympic year 2004, when they won the silver medal, however they seem to have improved since Aarhus. However here on the podium their performance was marred by too many mistakes, especially on parallell bars and horizontal bar.... they will have difficulties making the top ten, however the Olympic 'round of twelve' is in reach.
HORTON excelled, showing a perfect 'Fedorchenko' on horizontal bar, i.e. a stretched double salto with triple twist as descent; the pommel horse performance of ARTEMEV also looks like a ticket to the finals...!

- RUMania -  In the past, their performance on the podium was rarely convincing, but they mostly improved massively in competition. This year however a large improvement will be necessary if they want to purchase that team ticket to Beijing. Their most prominent gymnast Marian DRAGULESCU, who used to be a very good allrounder, but seems to have turned into a floor- and vault-specialist since he went solo, seems to have a few personal problems at present, appeared unconcentrated, only sketched his exercise on floor instead of show-casing himself ... could all this be only tactical manouvers?
At least today a coherent team performance from Rumania was not in evidence.
- NETHERLANDS - the Dutch gymnasts as a team seem weaker than expected.
It was clear that their rings supremo Yuri van GELDER would give a convincing performance on his favourite piece of apparatus, but his rivals, such as 'oldie' Yovchev (BUL),  Safoshkin (RUS), and the Italians aren't napping either...
Epke ZONDERLAND, ECH third in Amsterdam 2007 on parallell bars, and excellently prepared at that competition, is maybe even better on the horizontal bar: His Kolman salto, i.e. a Kovacs with full turn, was fantastic...!

- NORTH KOREA - was not represented by a team, but with three individuals of extroadinary prowess:
RI, Young Song - showed a triple Tsukajara on floor on he podium, just as had already been observed in free training. Just that is exciting! However he topped this with a double salto, followed by a triple twist...
and last of all another double Tsukahara, in tucked form. Unbelievable content with an A-score of 16.8 to 16.9 !!
He appears destined to perform turns around the longitudinal axis:
At the vault table he performed first a Kasamatsu with  2/1 turns, i.e. in total a triple turn arund the longitudinal axis, as the normal Kasamasu already contains one, and then as his second vault a Dragulescu, in other words handspring, double salto fwd. with 1/2 turn.
In free training he even risked a Im freien Training riskierte er sogar den "peaked Dragulescu "...!!!
... the inventors and others should beware!
And more:
RO, Chol Yin, his compatriot, hat similarly exciting super-vault in store:
1. - Handspring, stretched salto fwd. with 2 1/2 twist (i.e. the 'Kroll'-vault with a whole additional turn and
2. - Tsukahara with subsequent peaked double salto, as performed for instance by the Pole Blanik and other specialists

... by the way, a very pleasant change today:
More spectators than on the previous days, which turned the rather sterile atmosphere into one approximating competition, which obviously benefited the athletes!

- GERMANY - the host's men's team gives the impression of being well prepared and concentrated and tried to make their apparatus performances as similar to competition as possible. The star of the team, Fabian Hambüchen, had a little problem on horizontal bar, when he came a little early on a circle in reverse grip with 1/1 turn and had to correct himself...
... however in repetition the 'Yamawaki' and 'Rybalko' as  E-D-D-value combinations were exemplary and precise.
In this state ANDREAS HIRSCH's team is in with the best...!

- KOREA -  The South Koreans performed better here today than just a few days ago at the national meet with Switzerland in Maienfeld: There they positively stumbled through the competition, with 10 falls on rings (5x), vault (3x) and horizontal bar (2x) however they had come directly from intensive training.
Today they showed a high standard on all pieces of apparatus, maybe with a few difficulties on parallell bars.

- SPAIN - The Spaniards showed no great development as compared to the WCh 2006 in Aarhus. They are certainly candidates for the Olympic dozen, and the Athens Olympic champion on vault of 2004, Gervasio DEFERR, also showed a strong performance on floor.

A first, careful, evaluation ... ?!

Whoever wants to win here will have to beat the Chinese! Only Japan and Russia even come close, so these nations are the main medal aspirants. Next should come Canada, Korea and Germany, all of course with a caveat and depending on stability of performance...!

.... further six teams ... maybe with Italy and Australia added - in other words 14 teams are tussling for the coveted 12 Olympic places. And last of all, as an aside: observations from the podium give a first impression and enable vague assessments - the real competitions start now, and everything that happened up to today will be of no significance from tomorrow.
In other words: the World Championships can begin!

WEDNESDAY: PODIUM DAY TWO - Russian girls in good form...

On the first day of the podium training of the women, the German hostesses were able to test the apparatus early on, in Group 3, along with the Ukraine and two mixed teams.
The Chinese team was allotted an even more awkward slot in Group 1 (10 am), with the Italian team following just after in Group 2 (11.45 am).
Rumania on the other hand is ending the first day of training in Group 4 at about 6 pm and the 2004 Olympic champion Catalina PONOR seems to bee in a very good form...
... on Wednesday the women's podium training finished with the second day...

* Tuesday, August- 28.:
1st Day, PODIUM TRAINING, WOMEN
First impression at the location, confirmed by the officials of the world association FIG: All preparations were completed in time, the competition hall as well as the training rooms are in a superb condition, both technically and to look at. The Stuttgart organizers thus prove their considerable experience of preparing such events.
But there are also some "new" problems in organization, caused by "new" F.I.G regulations...
- The Chinese gymnasts showed their best technical performance ever... however we will have to wait and see whether the delicate little ladies can stand up to competition conditions!
China only brought three members of the team that won gold last year, leaving Zhang Nan and Zhou Zhuoru behind. Another veteran, Li Ya, is hurt. In their place are three 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old.

- Vanessa FERRARI, the Italian all-round world champion, seems to have an inspirational effect on the performance of the whole team - they seem, relaxed, easy-going, even a little coltish - hopefully this wont lead to mistakes in the competition!
... and a very impressive Catalina Ponor!
Rumania in the last group Tuesday's evening
, presented stable programmes, not only by their mainstays IZBASA and NISTOR:
Catalina PONOR is not just a former star with ambitions of making a comeback and becoming a leading gymnast once again; she has grown taller and maturer, but is in excellent condition figurewise and athletically - not only her beam performance was convincing, so were her performances on vault and floor. We look forward to the new Catalina PONOR of 2007 - particularly seeing she had announced her withdrawal at the ECh in Volos in 2006 !
Romania's Ana Maria Tamârjan will miss after fracturing her leg in today's podium training (uneven bars: ...she crashed and hit her knee to her mouth; so alternate Andreea Grigore will now take Tamârjan's place in the Romanians lineup.
* Podium Notes for GYMmedia:
   Dieter Hofmann (SUI)
- Russia seems to have got over the problems it was going through at the last ECh in Amsterdam. In total, this former leading nation seems to be on the up again and Elena Zamolodshikova also seem to be better trained than at many competitions in the run up to the WCh.
The 25-year-old Zamolodchikova, a double Olympic gold medalist, has 10 years on the youngest member of Russia's team, largely rebuilt from the squad that won the bronze medal at last year's worlds.
Ksenia SEMENOVA is the youngest at 15, but Russia also brought its junior champion Daria EELIZAROVA, and 16-year-old Ekaterina KRAMARENKO.
The superb acrobatic performances on the floor were particularly striking. Just two or three years ago the combination of a 2 1/2 backward twist with a stretched forward somersault was a rarity, this time the Russians are performing the second element with an additional 1/1 or even 1 1/2 turn!
While part of Russia's youth movement is out of necessity -veteran Anna PAVLOVA is injured  - it's also a way to see which athletes will be able to handle the pressure at next year's Beijing Olympics.

Sylvia Hitz (SUI)

- USA - without  Jana Bieger and without Memmel - presented a better performance than was to be anticipated from the list of names. Nastia LIUKIN performed on all four pieces of apparatus. The newly crowned US all-round champion Shawn JOHNSON excelled, showing, for instance perfect acrobatics on floor,
(1) Double Tsukahara... (2)  Handspring, stretched forward salto with a double twist - directly followed by a stretched salto forward with a 11/2 twist. SACRAMONE, whose athletic figure is reminiscent of Memmel showed following elements on vault
(1) handspring,  forward stretched salto with 1 1/2 twist and
(2) Yurchenko with double twist - both executed perfectly. It will be difficult for her competitors to best this!

After the end of the podium rotations zapproximately the following groupings in the standard of performance emerge:
- the quartett China, USA, Rumania and Russia will be fighting for the medals;
....behind them come following trios:
- Ukraine, Italy, Australia and then
- Japan, North Korea and Great Britain as the Top Ten who will be vying for the team finals.
There will however be a struggle for the eleventh and twelth place as anticipated, as at least four nations appear to have the right potential:
