Yukio Endo, (1970)
- one of the impressively character of international sport

He lost his mother to illness when he was in the 4th grade and to overcome his sorrow, he would race anything that moved, for he was a nimble runner.
At that time, he attended an elementary school in the city where he would eventually attend junior and senior high school.
Inspired by his teacher, Yukio took up gymnastics during his second year in junior high.
In 1952, Japan ranked 5th in the Team Competition at the Helsinki Olympics, in which Takashi Ono from the same prefecture participated.

The climax of his gymnastics career came in 1964 at the Tokyo Olympic Games when his team captured the Gold and Yukio won the Individual All-around and Parallel Bars competitions, with a Silver on Floor for good measure.

In 1966 at the Dortmund World Championships, when Japan walked away with the Team Gold, Yukio claimed a Silver on both Floor and Horizontal Bar.
The Mexico Olympic Games in 1968 marked his last Olympic appearance; the Japanese team won the Gold and Yukio took an ultimate Silver on Pommel Horse.

The FIG in Lausanne ...

*fig press: -- Established as early as 1881, making it the oldest established sport federation in the world, the International Gymnastics Federation (F.I.G.) officially inaugurated its new Head Office in Lausanne yesterday in the presence of International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge, FIG Executive Committee members and the Federation’s President Professor Bruno Grandi (ITA).
Back in October of 2005, the F.I.G. decided to transfer its Head Office from Moutier to Lausanne after having dismissed the idea of opening its offices in Neuchâtel. Founded in Liège (BEL) on July 23, 1881 by Coubertin contemporary Nicolas Cupèrus, the Federation has made its home in Switzerland since 1945. It has sat in Geneva, Lyss and Moutier by turn.

** FIG Office, Lausanne (SUI), March 04 - 06, 2009

* The FIG Executive ratified the codes of points for all FIG disciplines for the 2009 – 2012 Olympic cycle.

* The 2010 World Cup will be governed by new regulations.
The federations, or candidate cities for the organisation of an event, will submit their bids to the Executive office by June 30, 2009.

+ Tajikistan (TJK) and Montenegro (MTG) have requested affiliation to the FIG. The FIG Council will take a provisional decision in May.
The final decision will be made at the General Assembly in 2010.
Due to a doubtful electoral process, FIG authorities have refused to validate the results of a vote electing new authorities to the Albanian Gymnastics Federation.

* With two seats unoccupied on the Athletes’ Commission, the Executive has decided to name Trampoline delegate Dimitri Polyarush (BLR) as acting President of said Commission. Delegates for Men’s and Women’s Artistic will be elected parallel to the London World Championships, at which time a President will be designated in keeping with current protocol.

* The 78th Congress and General Assembly will be held October 26 – November 1, 2010 in Vysoke Tatry, Slovakia.

*The 30th Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships are set for September 19 – 26, 2010 in Moscow, Russia.

* The Japanese Gymnastics Association has submitted a bid for organisation of the 2011 FIG Council, devolved to the Asian Union. A decision will be taken at the FIG Council in Lillestroem (NOR) in May.

* A Legal Symposium will take place in Montreux (SUI), June 19 - 20, 2009. The following issues will be addressed:

  • Procedures to take when dealing with FIG authorities,
  • Conflicts of interest and restrictions on holding multiple mandates,
  • The election of a Technical Committee by the Congress, Council or Executive Committee.
  • Proposed modifications to the statutes submitted by the Ukrainian Federation,
  • The fight against doping and the legal responsibility borne by the national federations.

Thore Brolin (SWE), FIG Appeal Tribunal Member, will preside over the Symposium.
In 2009, the FIG organised 24 Gymnastic Academies that touched on all FIG competitive disciplines.

Do You know what D E A F L Y M P I C S are...?

The 21. DEAFLYMPICS 2009 will take place in Taipeh
From the 5th until the 15th of September 2009 the world elite of deaf athletes will determine the best among themselves in 19 different sports. 3.706 deaf participants from 74 nations signed on for the 21st summer games in Taiwan. Due to that, the „Deaflympics“ count next to the Olympic Games, the Universiades, the Paralympics,
Special Olympics and the World Games as one of the major sport events. However: gymnastic disciplines are not (yet) part of the program of these handicapped competitions.
Can deaf people practise gymnastics...?
...it is hard to imagine as it is widely known that the ear is the base of our balance and that every person is depending heavily on their sensation of sound for orientation in a room.

<< Because of that we observed the British Federation surprised at their first training camp on Gran Canaria in December 2008 as for example a 12 year old Dutch girl is able to practise on all four Olympic apparatus and eligible to participate in competitions.
The performance orientated training means everything to her which you can see on her astounding performance on the balance beam.

Bo Dominicus, aus Tilburg in den südlichen Niederlanden, ist von Geburt an gehörlos ...

So you can look forward with interest to the mentioned 21st Deaflympics 2009.
The "German Deaf Sports Federation“ will participate in this competition with a delegation of 230 people.
The German athletes will start in 13 different sports. - see under www.2009taipei.dg-sv.de , as well as the event web site of the organiser of the 21st Summer DEAFLYMPICS Taipeh 2009 .
