9th E Y O F 2007 : Holenkova- three times winner

The 9th EUROPEAN YOUTH OLYMPIC SUMMER FESTIVAL 2007 took place in Belgrade, Serbia, from 22 to 27 July 2007.
At the artistic gymnastics events 107 female juniors participated, representing 39 different European countries, including 32 complete teams (3 gymnasts).
The Ukrainian Valentyna HOLENKOVA won the all-around decision with a score of 57,050, in front of a Romanian duo, Stefania PATRASCU (56,500) and Andreea ACATRINEI (55,050) ....
Holenkova also won the finals on bars and beam...

The first European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) was held in 1991 under the name of the European Youth Olympic Days. The idea was launched by Jacques Rogge, at the time the President of the European Olympic Committees (EOC), and today's President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Rogge's idea was supported by the EOC, and in 1991 Brussels was the first to host the potential Olympians in summer sports (athletics, gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, swimming, table tennis, football, hockey, judo).
Two years later the EYOF Winter was also held, and since then the event has taken place both in summer and winter sports every two (odd) years.

By the complementary colours and forms of these elements, while being gently ascended and spread out, the shared rhythm is reinforced and synchronously expressed.
The forms and colours of logotype elements and the way they are grouped play the supporting role, in so far as they highlight the message communicated by the emblem itself.

Birthday Celebration...
On Saturday, October 06 was held a special birtday celebration.
Pierre Chabloz (SUI), founder and first UEG president, spoke about the first steps and the beginning of an impressively development of this organisation.
A very interesting message came from the former EBU sports coordinator (European Broadcasting Union), Mr. Richard BUNN, who said:
"...Contrary to the biggest part of the other sports, your sport is directed by technicians who think gymnastics all year long – but don’t forget that your clients, who are the TV spectators, have the choice of about 200 TV programs, movies, Internet and a whole lot of other leisure activities. You have to interest them, to make them understand in an intelligent way what gymnastics is, otherwise they will forget. Therefore, 'keep your sport simple, short and attractive' ...!”

FIG Coach Academy Level 3 in Cologne

This week  ended the course of the FIG Coach Academy Level 3 which was held at the German Sports University in Cologne from 25th September to 2nd October. This is the highest level of coach education in the Academy Program of the International Federation: Only eight Academies were held worldwide at this level until now.
21 coaches took part at this course, representing from nine nations, from Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Great Britain, Germany, Iceland, Norway, Portugal and Sweden.
Former Soviet star and at the current times coach in USA, Valeri LIUKIN, was one of the prominent lectors ...

Participants of the F.I.G. Coach Academy Course 2007 in Cologne, Germany

Working atmosphere ...

It was the first time ever that Valeri Liukin - one of the currently most successful coaches in the world - and Eduard Yarov , who was the coach of Valery to former Soviet times and helped him to do some of the most exciting skills in Gymnastics like the triple back somersault on floor,  taught together.
(The world premiere of the triple back on floor was 20 years ago, at the XVII. European Championships in Moscow, 1987, May 23rd..)

Even if they hadn’t spoken about techniques during the last 15 years, as Valeri said, it was pretty clear for the participants that both of them have almost the same concepts of modern gymnastics techniques.

Eduard YAROV, docent in Cologne....

During the closing ceremony Hardy Fink (CAN), the Director of the F.I.G. Coach Academy, stated “... in all the Academies at all levels the best participant was always a women… until now”.
Niklas Heckscher from Sweden (women's coach) could break this “tradition” and got the highest mark of all participants.

All the eleven participants ran for the coach brevet of the FIG and 8 of them could achieve it, so that right now a little bit more than 70 coaches have this brevet all over the world (33 MAG and 41 WAG).

Dr. Flavio Bessi, the member of the German Technical Committee who is in charge of coach education, thanked the F.I.G. Experts in the name of German hosts.
Most of the coaches are totally satisfied and are flying home with new knowledge and a big portion of motivation for their work. It is quiet probably that they will be seen in the next years by World, European and Pan-American Championships.

22nd GWG-CUP 2007: Ukraine and Switzerland give great performances

Europe's Top Juniors in Cottbus
On the first day of competitions at the 22nd International GWG-Cup 2007 in the Cottbus Lausitzarena the Ukrainian Mykyta Yermak won the all-round competition of the 11 to 14 year olds ahead of his team mate Oleg VernyayevSebastian Bock from Chemnitz came 3rd.

In the 15 to 18 age group the two Swiss gymnasts Kimon Wegmann and Lukas Fischer dominated, ahead of the German Fabian Lotz who is a member of the DTB Junior Team.

After the final day the German hosts, the Ukraine and Switzerland were each able to claim several medals. However, Gold medals also went to the Netherlands, Finland, Lithuania and Latvia...

Fabian Lotz - who is trained by coach Wolfgang Hambüchen, and a member of the DTB Junior Team, won the bronze medal.
Philipp Sorrer came 4th and Jonas Rohleder came 6th, both of whom are also members of the DTB Junior Team.

>> Results, All-round        >> Apparatus Finals, 15-18 years

The standard of 2007 - mixed...
Overall, this year's performances were not up to the standard set last year, partly because the Japanese team did not participate as it was in action at a parallel tournament in Yokohama.
Despite this the competition, which came quite soon after the summer holidays, was a good preparation for the German juniors for the next U18 binational meet with the USA in Colorado Springs, although the Berlin gymnast Philipp Sorrer in particular will have to tap his further potential, especially on floor (first sequence messed up), while he showed a good performance on horizontal bar, where he won the final.
The second German victory in a final was secured by  Fabian Lotz, who is trained by coach Hambüchen, on horse, after he had already won bronze all-round..
ALL-ROUND, School age  >> 11 to 14 years; The first six places in the first round of the 11 to 14 year olds were split between the Ukraine, Switzerland and Germany. The Ukraine dominated the competition; their gymnasts Mykyta Yermak and Oleg Vernyayev showed a high-class programme for their age group. German gymnasts such as Sebastian Bock (KTV Chemnitz) stayed in touch and the Swiss gymnasts Fabian Schryber, Janik Hitz and Janick Brunner also managed to gain good ranks.

In the school age classes (11-14 years) the standard of the competition was clearly set by the Ukrainian boys.

Although only gymnasts from Berlin, Chemnitz and Cottbus were present - some team gymnasts from the south of Germany didn't participate - much energy and many ideas will have to be applied to make sure that these future national gymnasts do not totally lose contact with the demanding European standard. However it is difficult to gain an overall impression, as little is known about the training status of such nations as Russia, France and Spain.

The 22nd edition of this impressive international junior event was however an absolute highlight in the European gymnastics calendar because of the fabulous conditions and the special 'Cottbus competition atmosphere', with which the organizers and their partners always manage to imbue it.
And quite a few future world champions - such as once upon a time the parallel bars virtuoso Mitja Petkovsek - may have stood on the winners' rostrum this weekend in the Lausitzarena.
