World Cup GRAND PRIX in Ostrava

Only one week after the  40th Worlds in Stuttgart the next competition of this year's world cup series (category B) was held in the city of Ostrava, in the Czech Republic.

Most of the international top stars left out this event .
So it was a good possibility for a lot of second rank athletes to get the attention of the media and the experts...

The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will also be remembered for a number of doping scandals, one of which involved Vietnamese gymnast Do Thi Ngan Thuong, who tested positive for a banned substance after finishing last in the women’s floor exercises.

Also the Hanoi press affirmed, that the 19-year-old, who was the only female representative in artistic gymnastics from Southeast Asia, was found to have taken diuretic furosemide – a readily available drug that can be used to lose weight.

The Vietnamese Olympic team has returned home from Beijing with only the one silver medal, won by weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan.

According to Russian agencies, following the disappointing results of the Russian teams at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart dthe beam European Champion Julia LOZHECHKO and the all-round European champion Maxim DEVIATOVSKYI  were expelled by the national gymnastics association...

This was apparently agreed at an urgent meeting in Stuttgart, according to the Russian head of gymnastics Andrei RODIONENKO who gave an interview to the agency "All Sport".
"Never before in soviet or Russian history has a competitor left the podium before the end of the competition," - was the reason he gave in the case of Deviatovsky, who had withdrawn from the competition after a fall from parallel bars at a point when he ranked second. "A Russian athlete must complete his exercise on every last apparatus, even if he has only one foot left to stand on." The measure was not meant to sanction the mediocre results but the 'unacceptable behaviour'.
In the case of the 17-year-old European Beam Champion of Amsterdam (2007), Julia Losetschko, Rodionenko criticezed "unprofessional behaviour":
Losetschko, he said, had decided of her own accord to present an exercise which was too easy, which she had 'arbitrarily reshaped', and had thereby given precedence to her own interests rather than those of the team.

Andrei RODIONENKO, in Soviet times the trainer responsible for the juniors of the "Dityatin-Generation" in the Seventies, then head of Soviet women's gymnastics, established Canadian womens' gymnastics in the world elite in the nineties and returned to Russia after Athens 2004.
There he was put in charge of both Russian men's and women's gymnastics after the retirement of Leonid Arkayev.

From August 8 - 18 the XXIV UNIVERSIADE 2007 was held in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. The artistic gymnastics competitions started on Thursday, August  9 with the women's team qualifications in the Arena Hall "IMPACT" Exhibition and Convention Center of Bangkok.
Hasashi MIZUTORI is the new World Champion of Students. With a total score of 92,450 points he won in front of GUO, Weydong (CHN) and Koki SAKAMURA (JPN).
After winning the women's team decision the member of the golden Chinese Team 2006 in Aarhus, ZHOU, Zhuoru won the second gold for China in the all-around competition.
At Sunday's finals Ukraine won four gold medals and together with Japan is the most successful nations...

Despite a string of falls from apparatus, the Chinese female gymnasts made an narrow escape to defend their Universiade team title on Thursday.

Led by the three world champions Zhang Nan, Fan Ye and Zhou Zhuoru, China was definitely the hot title favorite before the final as its strong rivals Russia, Ukraine and Romania sent their second teams to the 24th Universiade.
However, Zhang Nan, Fan Ye and Deng Ying all fell from the beam following Zhou Zhuoru's fall from the uneven bar. Thanks to the brilliant performances by the awakening world champions on floor and vault, China regained the advantage and edged Ukraine 0.7 points to nip the gold with 174.7 points. Ukraine took the silver and Russia finished third. China coach Sun Ping attributed the triumph to the high start value points and admitted," We are not in good form today."

Best in individual all-around qualification was FAN, Ye from China with 58,250 points. On second place came the Ukrainian Olga SHERBATYCH, who scored 57,950.
On third came the second Chinese  ZHOU, Zhuoru, but on Saturday she won the all-arund final with 60.200 points.
On second place came Olga SHERBATYCH (UKR; 58,350), followed by FAN, Ye (CHN).
Elena Zamolodshikova was fourth, Alina KOZICH (UKR) came on fifth place.

MEN's Competitions
Japan's men team was on top in Friday's Team decision with  a score of 273,700 points, followed by China (265,200) and Ukraine (263,150).
Hasashi MIZUTORI (JPN) was the best gymnast in the all-around qualification (92,000) and also the new world champion of students. With 92,450 he won in front of GUO, Weydong (CHN) and Koki SAKAMOTO (JPN);
and after the all-around final on Saturday MIZUTORI won the highbar final.

Pan Am Games Conclude in Rio de Janeiro

Team Decisions, Men's & Women's all-around

Brazil and the U.S. won four golds each in the apparatus finals at the Pan Am Games, held Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Team decision of the artistic gymnastics events ended with a surprising gold medal, won by the men's team of  Puerto Rico. in front of host Brazil. On Sunday
Jose Luis FUENTES from Venezuela earned gold in the all-around final as the only one gymnast who scored more than 90 points.
On the women's side the USA team won in front of Brazil and- after a disqualification Canada, instead  Mexico and on Monday the US girls edged a triple success at the all-around competition with Shawn JOHNSON on top.....

The United States, conquered the gold medal in the women's teams competition 243,225 points at the Multipurpose Arena. 
For the sixth time in the seven last  editions of the Games, the Americans are top.
The US girls had the best performance in three out of the four apparatus (beam, vault and uneven bars), remaining behind  Brazil only in the solo.
Brazilian team improved their performance by comparison with Santo Domingo, when they were bronze and conquered the silver medal scoring 236,725.
Mexico was the biggest surprise  on third (223,625) and took Canada'a third place.
Canada, former Pan Am runner-up, finished  fourth this time (with only 0,50 points behind Mexico), followed by Cuba, Argentina and Puerto Rico.

* The Pan American Sports Organization voted Thursday to nullify the Mexican women's team bronze from the recent Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro because of the accreditation status of one of the gymnasts, so the PASO executive committee voted unanimously to disqualify Mexico and move fourth-place Canada up to the bronze.

The USA won all of the three medals in the artistic gymnastics women’s individual all-around competition.
Shawn Johnson got the gold medal, after having scored 61.725 points. Rebecca Bross won the silver medal and scored 61.050 points and Ivana Hong, won the bronze one, with 59.375 points.
When the Brazilian gymnast, Jade Barbosa started the last routine she was already first place, but the Brazilian ended up in fourth and did not win any medals (59.325 points). Jade was the athlete who scored the most points in the vault competition(15.850), but she fell down during her uneven bars routine, which caused her to lose points and have a low final score.

A hard loss for German and international Gymnastics...

Siegfried FUNK from Augsburg, Germany, the Member of the FIG Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Technical Committee passed away on July 15, 2007, after a long and painful disease. 
 A few days before he visited the first German trials in Dessau for the upcoming worlds in Stuttgart this year ...

Siegfried Funk - b orn on July 23, 1944, -
was very early involved in Gymnastics and he took responsibilities both on regional and national levels.
He was elected in 2004 as a Member of the FIG, as Secretary of the Men’s Technical Committee.
Courteous and honest, Siegfried Funk was highly esteemed by his colleagues of the judges’ community and also by the gymnasts, for his rigorous and fair behaviour while accomplishing his difficult task.
The FIG President, Prof. Bruno Grandi, currently attending the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro (BRA), declared with emotion to the press: “Gymnastics lost a Friend. A man recognised for his sense of justice, his competence and his exemplary behaviour. We will all regret him!”
The entire Gymnastics community extends its deepest sympathy to the family as well as to the deceased’s loved ones.

During 16 days, - from July 13 -29 , 5,662 athletes from 42 different countries in the Americas will be after their best results on the courts, tracks, fields and swimming pools of Rio 2007.
>> The gymnastics disciplines will held from July 14 to 17 (artistic), on July 27 (rhythmic)  and July 27 - 28 (trampoline).
On Thursday, July 12 took place the men's and women's podium training and today the events starts...

The Beijing Olympic Committee for the Olympic Games 2008 (BOCOG) has just announced the "Official Supplier" of the 2008 Olympic Games.
The Dutch company "Janssen–Fritsen" from Helmond/NED has once again been selected, for the 5th time, to supply the artistic gymnastics equipment which will be used at the Olympic Games 2008 in the Chinese capital.
