BINATIONAL MEETING Portugal  vs. Spain
The Spanish men's national team beat the hosts scoring 341,325 points compared to Portugal's 341,300 in a meeting of the two countries in the northern Portuguese town of Maia. The best single athletes were Rafael Martinez (ESP; 88,975) and Maneel Campos (POR; 88,600).
The meeting took place simultaneously with the
"II. INTERNATIONAL MAIA JUNIORS' TOURNAMENT 2007".
A Chinese team won this tournament, followed by a British and a Belgian team...
BINATIONAL MEETING PORTUGAL - SPANIEN
- Maia, Portugal, 6th April 2007 -

The Spanish guests took the lead on the floor as expected (57,275 : 57,125), continued to extend it on the following apparatuses and scored 63,950 : 61,175 on the vault, the best score in the binational meeting.
The hosts, Portugal, came into its own only on the parallel bars(56,725 : 57,425), however, on the high bar, they trailed the Spanish guests by a mere four tenths of a point (55,000 : 54,600)

Rafael Martinez (ESP)
- best allrounder once again

In the single ranking the Spanish allround talent and former allround European champion Rafael Martinez, (< Foto, links) triumphed once again; he was the only gymnast to have initial values of more than 16.000 on all apparatuses, won five apparatuses and was beaten only on the floor, by the Portuguese top gymnast  Manuel Campos (16.3 = 15,075), despite having the highest initial value, scoring16.4 = 14,550), .

"II. INTERNATIONAL MAIA JUNIORs' TOURNAMENT 2007"

The Portuguese organisers cleverly achieved a maximum of press and public interest by joining the international meeting of the elite teams with a international juniors' tournament.

 

The international juniors' of the 11 competing teams came from 10 countries. The athletic standard was set in particular by China, Great Britain, Switzerland and Belgian junior gymnasts.

In the single ranking, British gymnast Reece Pearson from Nottingham Gymnastics Club won, presenting the most consistent performance and scoring 85,700 points, followed in this tournament by the strong 17 year old Swiss junior (85,150), who came second in his age group at the International Juniors' Team Cup 2007 in Berlin.
The third place went to Tan, Shijin (84,200) from China.

Maia – Artistic Gymnastics World Capital
In just a few days time, on next Friday (April 6), the "Ginásio Clube da Maia" will host the "2nd Maia Gymnastics International Tournament 2007",  which will take place in the local Gymnastics Complex. This is an event recognized by the Portuguese Gymnastics Federation as well as the Northern Portugal Gymnastics Association, and supported by Maia’s City Council.

Some of the world´s best athletes of  male artistic gymnastic will be present, in a competition divided into two main events:
- a junior’s world tournament and
- a senior’s friendly meet between the national teams of Portugal and Spain. ..


Dual Meet: Portugal - Spain
The biggest competitive moment is precisely the Portugal-Spain clash which will serve as a preparation for the next European Gymnastics Championship in Amstersdam (NED) from April  26 to 29.

Strong field of junior participants!
Concerning the junior’s competition, there is confirmation that the national teams of China, Switzerland, Belgium, Israel, Qatar and Wales, as well as club teams from Germany, England and Catalonia’s Gymnastics Federation will participate.

For the national colours of Portugal there will be present some of the most representative clubs e.g. Ginásio Clube Português, Clube Desportivo Nacional da Madeira, and the host Ginásio Clube da Maia

The 2nd Maia Gymnastics International Tournament
will be a unique occasion to see in action the Spanish athletes Rafael Martinez (European Champion in 2005) and Gervásio de Deferr (twice Pommel Horse Olympic Champion), as well as the Portuguese Manuel Campos, one of the Portuguese references in this sport and a strong candidate to win a place at the Beijing Olympic Games, in 2008.

The Beijing's National Indoor Stadium (NIS),
the venue where some of the most popular spectator sports of the summer Olympic Games will take place in 2008, is nearing completion.

Located in the Olympic Green, the NIS will host the artistic gymnastics, trampoline and handball competitions.
Its construction was started in May 2005....


The flanges supporting the east and west facades, the main structure, the stand plates and the glide of the steel roof trusses have all been completed. Workers are now installing the glass curtain wall facades and fitting up the interior.

The stadium, which has a land surface of 80,900 square metres and can be used for various kinds of sport competitions and cultural activities, will serve as a multi-functional sporting centre after the Olympic Games.

After the OPENING CEREMONY of the Sydney Entertainment Centre - Darling Harbour, the first competion day of the 5th AUSTRALIAN YOUTH OLYMPIC FESTIVAL 2009 started at Thursday:
The girl's team of CHINA 169,825), followed by Japan and Great Britain and the boy's team of Great Britain (247,201), in front of China and Australia I where the first winner of the team events.
On Friday Ashley WATSON from Leeds (GBR) won the all-round (82,800), followed by Reiss BECKFORD and Max WHITLOCK - all from Great Britain (!!)
Cui, Jie (CHN; 59,175) won the all-around girl'd competition in front of two Japaneses.

Great Britain’s shock win in the men’s artistic gymnastic teams event was a precursor for clean sweep in the individual all-around.
> Teams Boys & Girls (Jan 15) 
* ALL-AROUND
Sixteen-year-olds Ashley Watson, Max Whitlock and Reiss Beckford shone in front of the excited crowd as they took out gold, silver and bronze. Watson scored 82.800, followed closely by Beckford on 82.033 and Whitlock on 82.000.
Beckford and Whitlock kept the crowd sitting on the edge of there seats in a tight battle for second place.

* Event Finals - B O Y S:
After winning the team and all-around competitions the British boys were also the most successful athletes at the final events:
They went to gold on floor exercises (Reiss BECKFORD: -14.000), on pommel horse (Max WHITLOCK: -14.425) and also on parallel bars (Ashley WATSON: -14.075).
The other victors came from China:
- LIU, Zhanteng  on rings -14.200) and vault - 15.550.
- ZHU, Xiaodong on high bar - 14.075.

At the end British boy group was the most successful nation on male side:
5 gold - 4 silver - 3 bronze medals;
China came on 3 gold - 2 silver - 2 bronze and
Australia won each 3 silver and bronze medals.
* Event finals - G I R L S:
WU, Liufang on balance beam (15.600) and all-around winner CUI, Jie on floor exercises (14.825) won two more gold at the final day.
So China were the most successful nation on womens side, winning 4 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal (4/2/1).
Japanese girls ranked on second place (1/2/2 ), after team and AA silver & bronze, and after the gold medal of Natsumi SASADA on uneven bars (14.350). 
Host Australia won gold an silver on vault by Emily LITTLE (14.700) and Britt GREELEY (14.450) and came on third place by nations (1/1/--).
British girls didn't get a gold medal (--/1/3). The best at final day was Danusia FRANCIS, winning silver on floor (14.025):

Today, on March 19, one of the greatest and most famous German gymnasts worldwide celebrates her 60th birthday.
Erika ZUCHOLD from Leipzig was one of the best known personalities in international gymnastics in the sixties and seventies of the 20th century, along with Karin Büttner-Janz and before Maxi Gnauck .
In all her varius roles - as the first women to dare perform a flicflac on the beam (1964), as the winner of the silver medal at the Mexico City Olympics (1968) and those in Munich in 1972, as double world champion in Ljubljana in 1970 or today as a well-known painter, sculptress and versatile artist, this creative and sensitive women has always made the highest demands of herself and pushed back the frontiers of the perception of the world....

One must be robust as a gymnast. She however appears to be sensitive, vulnerable. This is in fact the case. She is very precise, almost pedantic, tends to do everything 100%. In this she makes punishing requirements of herself, today as much so as she did in the past. 
It all began in a small village...
Maybe the very early and intensive occupation with gymnastics as a child in her home village of Lucka/Breitenhain near Leipzig formed her character.

Young Erika - going strong at nine years of age!

After all, gymnastics is a 100% sport - at least if you intend to reach the top.
<< The child Erika stood out because of her impressive talent and began her incomparable career as early as the end of the fifties/beginning of the sixties of the last century.
For the SC Leipzig the benchmark for the nurturing of young gymnasts was even then the world elite - represented at that time by the Soviets as well as the Czechs, such as Eva Bosakova and Vera Caslavska.
The gymnasts of the GDR at that time were far removed from the highly admired international stars of womens gymnastics, but their goals were ambitious and consistent, even if the available means often left much to be desired - this lack was compensated with enthusiasm!

... at all times her demands of herself where sensationally high!

The international sensation...
When Erika Barth at just 17 years of age caused an international sensation by performing the first flicflac on the beam and then won the painful qualification tournament in Halle/Saale, which was bedevilled by intra-German political quarrels, she was held internationally to be the exceptional favourite for the Olympic Games in 1964 - on a par with the heros of those Games, Caslavska, Latynina, Astachowa ...
...but just as she was due to depart for Tokio she tore her Achilles tendon and her bravest dreams dissolved....!
She also suffered much pain while, having married the former cycling world record holder Dieter Zuchold in 1967 and started to study to be a teacher (1965-69: music and sports), she fought her way back into the world elite...

... to Olympic silver medals in Mexiko-City (1968) and Munich (1972) – together with the legendary Olga Korbut (URS) on the bars and to her titles in the world championships on the vault and beam in Ljubljana in 1970.
But mostly she fought with herself, vanquishing pain and self-doubt - not always with immediate success...                                                                   As an entertainer, performing tap dance and singing - for instance in popular TV shows such as „Kessel Buntes“ – as well as in her constant serch for new creative challenges for a mature artist with a particular enthusiasm for nature, Erika Zuchold always remained true to her sensitive and honest self!
So it was no wonder that the failure of the socialist social experiment GDR left a painful void for her to fill. It was her nature simply to change course! 

She was far too honest, had always participated in tis experiment with heartfelt enthusiasm - it was difficult to throw overboard a conviction so emotionally held...

Years of rethinking, of accepting the changed situation, of searching for new points of reference followed...

This appears to be her creed - which does not mean that she has not long returned to the active life! Her sensibilities are not in evidence when the artist committed to nature gives shape to the Rochlitz porphyry with her tools and carves her way into stone. However, they are much in evidence in the end products of her exhausting activity, as well as in the way in which the maturing artist masters the stony paths of life. She is a sculptress, painter and poet; nevertheless she still loves to don top hat, walking stick and tap dancing shoes during her popular vernissages...

2005: als dritte deutsche Turnerin 'Member of International Gymnastics Hall of Fame', Oklahoma-City

Even if many GDR sporting careers seem affected, even blighted by the strange course of national history and perspective - the world remembers this exceptional personality:

In 2005 Erika Zuchold was inducted into the Oklahoma City „Hall of Fame“ of international artistic gymnastics as the third German female gymnast after Maxi Gnauck (2000) and Karin Büttner-Janz (2003).
Erika Zuchold now appears to have given artistic gymnastics, the demanding and complex sport she once pursued with such precision a new dimension - she has incorporated into the highly personal and varied phases of aesthetic accomplishment as an artist.

Can one interpret gymnastics more beautifully than in giving individualistic, artistic answers to many of the open questions of this complex sporting discipline ?

Italian Festival at the World Cup in Paris-Bercy

Ferrari won three of four finals!

At the first world cup of the season in Paris-Bercy, France, Italian women's gymnastics got a total triumph: All-around world champion Vanessa FERRARI won on three apparatuses and her teammate Carlotta GIOVANNI on vault.
After than Igor CASSINA was the best on men's high bar!

On men's side Marian DRAGULESCU (ROU) succeeded on floor and vault, the Chineses TENG, Haibin (pommel horse) and FENG Zhe (parallel bars) and Kai Wen TAN (USA; rings) were the other winners in Paris....

Friendly Meet: Great Britain versus USA

- baga-info: --- Very competitive, steady and talented US Team won well-deserved victory over Great Britain's women team (237.700: 218.100) in the Friendly Meeting at Salto Gym Club, Lisburn City, Belfast. Current Junior US Champion Shawn Johnson from Chow’s Gymnastics, Iowa, snapped the Individual All-around victory (60.150) presenting last a stunning performance on Floor.


Beautiful Shayla Worley (Orlando Metro, Fla.) took the Silver, 59.650 and the Bronze went to the very athletic Samantha Peszek (DeVeau’s, Ind.) 58.650). Best for the British Team for the day were Hannah Clowes (Liverpool) and Rebecca Wing (Heathrow), who shared the fourth position (54.300), followed by Laura Jones in sixth (54.100).

The Canadian Cirque du Soleil is seeking new talents for its thirteen current productions and upcoming creations.
The CIRQUE wish to inform that, in 2007, Cirque du Soleil will be holding acrobatics and circus arts auditions all around the world.
With the number of shows growing, you can easily imagine how many new artists we need to fill new roles, serve as permanent or temporary replacements, play back-up positions, etc. ....

The Cirque du Soleil Casting team is specifically seeking artists
in the following disciplines:

 

Artistic, rhythmic and acrobatic gymnastics, circus arts, trampoline, tumbling, diving, synchronized swimming, martial arts, stunts, extreme sports (BMX, rollerblading, etc.), urban acrobatic disciplines (b-boy/hip-hop, urban movement, acrobat-dancers, etc.).

 

Since 1984, Cirque du Soleil has carved out a special niche
for itself in the world of performing arts.
Through a mix of street performance, circus arts,
dance, theatre, music and singing, Cirque du Soleil  has
given life to a magical new universe.
