Hamm brothers ready for new routine

Paul and Morgan Hamm are ready to try a new routine after traveling the globe since the Olympic Games in Athens.
The gymnasts have been making appearances since Paul won gold in the all-around on Aug. 18 and then - because of a scoring dispute - had to wait weeks before arbitrators decided he could keep his medal.
The twins have appeared on talk shows and award shows, competed on a Japanese game show obstacle course and answered countless questions from people on the street about the medal controversy.
Now, in January, they come back to their hometown Columbus...

Kylie Shewfelt - Canadian s Athlete of the Year!

'Kyle's happy Shew year'
Calgarian top male athlete Kyle Shewfelt has another attraction to help decorate his new Calgary home. The gold medallist in the floor exercise at the 2004 Athens Games was unpacking boxes yesterday when he learned he's been named winner of the 'Lionel Conacher Male Athlete of the Year Award'. 'It's extremely exciting for me,' Shewfelt said. 'This year was just like a dream.'

Olympic Champion 2004 on floor: Kylie SHEWFELT (CAN)

Shewfelt should have been awarded another medal at Athens, but questionable judging cost him a bronze in the vault.
After enjoying a 'much-needed' two-month break, Shewfelt is training at the University of Calgary under Olympic team coach Tony Smith after previous coach Kelly Manjak moved to Ontario.
Shewfelt plans to return to competition in the spring while focusing on the 2005 world championships in November.

'Some days I think, 'Did I really accomplish such a huge goal in my life?' ' he said of his Athens performance.

Shewfelt finished the voting with 139 points, seven ahead of Martin St. Louis of the Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning.
St. Louis received 30 first-place votes, two more than Shewfelt, but the Olympian earned 18 second-place and 19 third-place votes. St. Louis had 13 second-place votes and 16 thirds.
Kayaker Adam van Koeverden, who won a gold and a bronze at Athens, also had 28 first-place votes in finishing third. This Athlete of the Year is selected by The Canadian Press and Broadcast News.

Arkaev resigns -Titov will be the next Russian Gymnastics President

After 22 years the president of the Russian Gymnastics Federation Leonid ARKAEV resigns after massive criticism.
In the recent elections the 69-year-old triple Olympic Champion and former president of FIG Juri TITOV prevailed in a sensationally close vote (27 : 22 votes) over the former gymnastics diva Svetlana KHORKINA (25) who was also running for office....

Svetlana Khorkina (RUS)

The main reproach against the current president Arkaev was the bad performance of the Russian gymnasts at the Olympic Games in Athens as well as the opinionated and authoritarian leadership of the 64-year-old. The majority of the delegates at this gymnastics congress considered Arkaev's work of the past four years as being 'dissatisfactory'.

His successor Titov severely criticised Arkaev's actions: 'We have to destroy what Arkaev introduced, this certain disregard of opinions of the council of experts', he said.

Russian gymnasts in South Africa

Two of Russia's brightest gymnastics stars of the new millennium, double Olympic champion Elena Zamolodchikova (22), and triple Olympic medallist Ekaterina Lobazniouk (21), have arrived in South Africa to kick-start a local club's programme.
Between them, they have won seven Olympic medals and more Russian, European, World championships and other international medals than they can remember.....

Elena's secon visit in South Africa

The petite Moscovite now has a driver's licence and intends to drive and see as much as possible during her visit. 'I do it all the time on my motorbike in the hectic Moscow traffic - it is like an extreme sport experience,' she said.

Ecaterina Lobazniouk's career took off again after a knee operation performed by former rugby Springbok Daan du Plessis at the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Pretoria two years ago.
'Unfortunately a drunken commuter in the Moscow Metro lost his balance and fell on me and I injured the knee again. I have had two further operations, the last one just before Christmas,' said Lobazniouk.
Lobazniouk, now a fifth-year sports student, will remain for six weeks to assist the Russian Gymnastics School of SA's women's artistic programme. Zamolodchikova will remain in South Africa for eight days before flying out to compete in a World Cup event.
