<< Louis Smith from Huntingdon Olympic Gym Club, was announced one of the recipients of the BOA Olympic Athlete of the Year trophy on Wednesday, 16 January.  The 18-year old, coached by Paul Hall, broke through to the Senior world elite, by winning the Bronze medal on Pommel Horse at the 2007 World Championships in Stuttgart. Smith was twice Junior European Champion on this apparatus, in Lubljana (SLO) 2004 and Volos (GRE) 2006. 
Introduced in 2005, to mark the BOA’s Centenary Year and the awarding of the 2012 Olympic Games to London, the BOA presented a trophy to each of the 35 Olympic Governing Bodies for them to award on an annual basis to their top Olympic Athlete.
Winners of the Olympic awards were also invited to celebrate their achievements at the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year. BOA Chief Executive Simon Clegg:
“The presentation of these trophies recognises the drive, determination and commitment of athletes across all of our Olympic sports as they strive to achieve their goals in the international sporting arena. The BOA hopes to welcome as many of these athletes as possible in to Team GB in the coming Olympiads.”

Former German National Coach Klaus MILBRADT passed away....

With great sadness the German and international gymnastics family has to bid farewell to one of its most dedicated personalities:

On Tuesday, November 20th 2007, Klaus MILBRADT died of heart failure at the age of 67 only.
He was threefold German gymnastics champion (GDR), longtime coach and first gymnastics national coach of the reunited Germany.

In the 1960ies he himself belonged to the leading top-gymnasts of the GDR...

Later, as a coach first in Leipzig (SC DHfK), later in Halle (SC Chemie) and as the first national coach after the German reunification, Klaus MILBRADT coached outstanding athletes of international top class and considerably influenced the direction and dimensions of the gymnastics development in the reunited Germany.

After a long and grave disease, his heart failed on November 20th 2007...

Following grave disease, one of the world-famous coaches died yesterday on his 65th birthday in his hometown Milan. << Mikhall KLIMENKO was once National juniors' champion of the USSR, but turned to the profession of coach quite early due to an injury and once took care of the gravely injured wheelchair-bound Elena Mukhina. The brother of the sixfold European Champion Victor Klimenko,  who lives in Germany now, was known as one of the most creative coaches in womens' artistic gymnastics.

He surprised the public during an international contest with the former GDR, where he competed with his famous brother Victor in a circle slope competition in the early 1970ies.
He coached Victor during the 10th European Masters men in Grenoble, France, where Victor won the fifth of his six European Master titles (foto, right) and became Olympic Champion on pommel horse in Munich a little later.

In the late 1970ies as one of the first coaches, Mikhail Klimenko introduced the double Tsukahara in floor gymnastics together with his fosterling Elena Mukhina.

In the sport palast in Minsk, where Elena had her grave downfall two weeks before the Olympic Games 1980 in Moscow, coach Mikhail Klimenko was not there himself. He had a trustful relationship to Elena and was completely traumatised after the accident and needed quite a long time to handle his fosterling's stroke of fate.
A little later, already during the 1980ies, Mikhail Klimenko left the Soviet Union and found a second home in Italy, where he worked as coach in womens' artistic gymnastics in Milan till the end.

GRAND PRIX Glasgow: Strong British Hosts

A big success for British hosts...

This year's last World Cup Event
Great Britain, Romania and the Netherlands  topped the medal table at the 11th Glasgow Grand Prix of artistic gymnastics, which was held at the Kelvin Hall this weekend: These three nations claimed two Gold, at this last world cup event of this year.
For Briton Beth Tweddle was victorious on floor and Marissa King on vault. Louis Smith claimed pommel horse silver, and Kristian Thomas bronze on floor. For Romanian Steliana Nistor won on uneven bars and Daniel Popescu the pommel horse decision.
But also the Dutch men were happy about the high bar success of Epke Zonderland and about - once again -  Yuri van Gelder on rings.
11th GRAND PRIX GLASGOW 2007

The 2007 last world cup event of artistic gymnastics took place at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall.
This Grand Prix attracted the best field ever with a start list awash with World Stars of Olympic and World fame representing 30 countries from 3 continents.
The quality standard was a better and stronger than in the last German Cup in Stuttgart, two weeks before.
British hosts won two gold and all together four medals. Just Romania and the Dutch men ...:

After the first day's qualification round ten different athletes representing ten different countries are leading at all the women's and men's apparatuses...

Brits in the Finals...
British gymnasts qualified for five finals during qualification at the Glasgow Grand Prix.
Beth Tweddle qualified comfortably on both uneven bars (1st) and floor (3rd) and Marissa King qualified after finishing a terrific 2nd on vault ....

In front of a fantastic background in the hall stadium in Zurich, an exciting turn competition took place in this year's "SWISS CUP".  After clearly leading the semi-final, the Romanian couple Steliana NISTOR and Flavius KOCZI won clearly, leaving the experienced German couple Oksana TSCHUSSOWITINA / Eugen SPIRIDONOV behind. The Russian duo Swetlana KLJUKINA / Sergei CHOROCHORDIN ranked third, in front of the Brasilian siblings Diego HYPOLITO, World Champion in floor and his sister Daniele. The couple from the host country 
Ariella KAESLIN / Niki BÖSCHENSTEIN had curtly missed the final of the best four....

The Romanian couple Steliana Nistor/Flavius Koczi clearly won the couples' competition.
Thus, winner of the Swiss Cup was a Romanian couple for the fifth time during the last seven years.
Vice-World Champion Steliana Nistor, who stood in for the injured Sandra Izbasa, is second in all aroundof the WORLDS in Stuttgart 2007.
She started with vault (14.000), continued the second round on uneven bars (15.000) and achieved her best score of the day in the semi-final on beam - 15.700.
She ensured the Romaninan victory with her improval in the final (15.400).
Her sportive partner Flavius Koczi was European Champion on pommel horse in 2006 and performed first on his special apparatus, got 15.100 points with a basic score of 15.9.  The Romanian is  also known as brilliant gymnast on horse vault, althoug standing in the shadow of the Olympic Champion and multi World Champion Marian Dragulescu till today. In the final, Koczi achieved a score of 16.200 in vault.

This worldclass couple left the German duo Tschussowitina/Spiridonow on the second rank in the last apparatus round, with a distance of 1.75 points.

Kaeslin, Böschenstein: ... third last year, this time, 0.15 pointsl were missing for the podium!

In front of 6.200 spectators, Ariella Kaeslin und Niki Böschenstein missed the final with a lack of 15 hundredth points. But only a bit was missing and the two could have influenced the final competition, like last year (ranking third), and could have achieved a place on the podium. The winner's place was endowed with 23.000 francs.

Good start (rings: 15.1000), with highest score in vault (16.259), Böschenstein's miscarried dispatch from the parallel bars cost them the participation in the final of the best four.

The second Swiss couple Lucia Tacchelli / Claudio Capelli dropped out during the pre-turn already, after two apparatuses. Nevertheless, the public was as big as never before in the last 30 years and was zealous about this attractive Swiss gymnastics event. The spectators contributed to an atmosphere like during an icehockey match...!

f.i.g. press:  During the recent Artistic Gymnastic World Championships in Stuttgart, the President of the FIG, Mr. Bruno GRANDI,and his Secretary General Mr. Andrè Gueisbuhler, welcomed members of the African Gymnastics Union Executive in an effort to get a global idea of their perspectives....

Discussions hinged mainly on the developmental aid provided by the FIG to all areas of gymnastic development within the UAG.
President Grandi reiterated that any aid procured by the FIG must be backed by a dossier explaining the context, objectives and options open to those requesting aid.

Africa is enjoying a wave of development and it is up to these councillors to manage and optimise it.
Both the African Games and the African Championships in Gymnastics have revealed a treasure trove of new talent, and the UAG is counting on these individuals to represent Africa in international competitions.
Development, education, follow-up, supervision and judging are among the many issues being discussed through 2008, particularly at the FIG Council in May in Cape Town.

At the beginning of October a ten day's course of studies for coaches of women's artistics gymnastics ended at the national training center of CUBA GYMNASTICS FEDERATION in Havana.

The course was part of the F.I.G. program "Olympic Solidarity" .
After 2006, January this was the second course under the leadership of the former German and later Swiss coach Dieter HOFMANN, assisted by the former world star Erik LOPEZ ...

At this course 2007 "Olympic Solidarity" *
took part 36 coaches from four Cuban districs but also all the Cuban coaches from the national gymnastics center, here in Havana.

Also guests from some different countries participated, representing  Bolivia, Venezuela, Guatemala and also two coaches from Indonesia.

 

The F.I.G. was giving the authorization again to the teacher  Dieter HOFMANN (SUI), who led 21lessons and 43 hours of theory and practice to such contents like long term development of gymnastics achievment, components and methodology of modern training and competition systems of young female and male gymnasts.

The main organization of this course was taken care by 
Jose Echezeretta from the CUBA GYMNASTICS FEDERATION and the former international gymnastics star  Erik Lopez.

Coaching seminar "'OLYMPIC SOLIDARITY'"
Dieter Hofmann, the former head coach of the men's national team of the GDR who now lives in Switzerland where he was a coach at the club NKL Liestal, has been working for FIG-events already since the 70ies.

Dorina BÖCZÖG? (HUN)

Best team of the 32nd anniversary of the traditional  LEVERKUSEN CUP 2007 and to the second time (after 2005) winner of this traditional trophy of European women's artistic gymnastics, the squad from Ginastica Artist. Lissonese, Italy, with a score of  108,650 points. 
After 1992 participating again the Rumanian team from the world famous center Deva came on second place (107,800), followed by a strong Hungarian team Hungarotel GYM Club on third place (107,100).
More than 2,200 visitors saw an exciting competition.
Last year second placed the Hungarian  Dorina BÖCZÖGÒ from Hungarotel Gym Club won the all-around in front of  Andrea La Spada (ITA) and the Rumanian Diana Trenca.

Altogether the gymnasts from Italy, Rumania and Hungary determined the technical level, the German top gymnasts renounced this competition regretfully...
Winning the all-around competition the Hungarian gymnast  Dorina BÖCZÖGO scored also the highest points at vaulting table (highest start value: 15.0) and on the uneven bars, too.

But despite in the fact of some problems of her difficult balance beam exercise (final score: 12.750, oRank 16) and the fourth position at floor exercise Dorina insured her leading position at the end of the all-around.

Her team from Hungarotel ranked on third place - behind the Rumanian Team from Deva and followed by the Royal Belgium Gymnastics Federation and the GAL Gym Team LIXONUM  from Italy.

La Spada (ITA), Trenca (ROU)

The second all-around placed  Andrea La Spada from Italy  (53,90) could have been at a better postion - may be the best - with a more difficult vault (- instead her start value of 14.4, only), because she ranked on fourth and fifth places at the other three apparatuses...

Also Diana Trenca (ROU; Deva) on third place had more chances with a stronger vaulting program: she came on 10th place with 13,300 (SV 14.4) like La Spada... but on floor exercises the Rumanian was definitely the best gymnast (14,300).
