German Olympic Champion Klaus KOESTE celebrates 65th birthday

When Walter Steffens, Olympic Champion of 1936 and last gymnast of the golden squad of 1936 died in summer 2006 in his hometown Barnstorf, Klaus KOESTE from Leipzig stated laconically: "...my God, now I am the Germany's oldest Olympic gymnastics champion...!"
Today the Olympic Champion on vault (Munich 1972) and double European Champion on high bar (1971/72) celebrates his 65th birthday in his native town Kossen, near Leipzig, together with his family and a lot of gymnastics friends. After Helmut Bantz in Western Germany (Melbourne 1956), Köste was the first Olympic Champion in gymnastics in the GDR and became a legend of gymnastics with incredible 34 national champion's titles and a total of 11 international medals...

Politically committed, Klaus KÖSTE stood beside the German cycling legend Gustav Adolf SCHUR for four years, who represented the German party PDS as a member of the Bundestag from 1998 until 2006.
Together with "Täve" (nickname of Schur) and the former athlete Gunhild HOFMEISTER he realised the campaign "Sportsmen against the war in Iraq" in 2003.

This peace list - which was handed over to the UN - was signed by about 2.400 high-ranking representatives of German sports in East and West, among them 116 Olympic Champions and 600 winners of international medals. It became one of the greatest peace campaigns in the history of German sports.

Comaneci expects Chinese success in Olympic gymnastics

Nadja Comaneci, in conversation with the Chinese press...
On the edge of the awarding ceremony of "9th Laureus World Sports Award" last weekend at the Marinski Theater in St. Petersburg the  gymnastics legend Nadia Comaneci was a very desired converser for journalists from all over the world.
The Olympic heroine of Montreal 1976 was one of the 44 distinguished members of the awarding jury in St. Petersburg
Comaneci, looking to the Olympics in August, sang high praise for the Chinese national team:
"The Chinese team is very very good. In men's competition, I don't think any other team could be better than them", she told the Chinese press agency Xinhua ...
<< Yang Wei from China and Shawn Johnson of the United States in particular, when asked if there could be any super star in Beijing. Johnson (16), won three gold medals in team, all-around and floor categories in the 2007 world championships in Stuttgart.
"He (Yang Wei) is fantastic. In men's competition, he has no equal. In women's we'll see. But I think Shawn Johnson would be able to (be a super star). She's good. But as I said, it's in China! So it's going to be hard for her," said Comaneci, who was born in Romania but a U.S. citizen now, married with the Olympic champion (parallel bars)  from 1984, Bart Connor.

Shahtri said that three gymnasts – Nasser Al Mahmoud, Mahmoud Al Sa’adi and Al Jazi Al Habshi will represent Qatar during the three-day event, one of six such events held around the globe every year.
This will be our biggest assignment since the
2006 Asian Games gymnastics event held in Doha ,” Shahtri said. “In fact this is a bigger event since only six World Cup series events are held in the world every year,” he said.

The QGF chief said he expects young Qatari gymnasts to gain experience from their participation in the three-day event. “The world’s best gymnasts will be seen in action. These three young kids can gain a lot. They have performed well in recent times, with Nasser winning three medals at  2007 Asian Junior Championships. Such events help youngsters not to get overawed of famous names in gymnastics,” Shahtri said.

The QGF president said the Doha event will be seen by a television audience of nearly 70 million.

Cathy RIGBY as Mammy Yokum in the Musical Li l Abner ...

CATHY RIGBY became the first American gymnast, male or female, to win a medal at the World Championships. It happened in 1970 in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia, by winning the silver medal on balance beam, behind the big German gymnast Erika ZUCHOLD, from Leipzig...
<< Now Cathy Rigby has fun in the Musical "Li'l Abner" in which she plays Mammy Yokum in a production from Reprise! Broadway's Best, together with actor Fred Willard  at the UCLA in Los Angeles.
The actress Rigby
was nominated for a Tony Award in 1991 already for her performance in the title role of the 35th anniversary return of "Peter Pan", a production that came back to Broadway in 1999 and also toured the country extensively many years....
Cathy Rigby's first career is both blessing and curse;
an actress now but also an eating disorder survivor at the end of "her first life..."
No matter that she has been doing musical theater for 30 years and was nominated for a Tony Award for her Broadway role as "Peter Pan," she remains first-and-foremost in many minds an Olympic athlete.

<< In 1997 Cathy RIGBY became a member of the "International Gymnastics Hall of Fame" in Oklahoma City.
