Women s Qualification: China in front of Romania and USA

CHINESE Women's Team is on top (148,671) after strong rotations of the team qualifications of the World Championships in Anaheim/USA.
So it was a little surprise, that titleholder ROMANIA (148,120) ranked on second place only, in front of the long time leadung U.S girls on third (147,697).
Russia and Spain together on fifth place, than Australia, Brazil, Great Britain, France, Canada and - another surprise - North Korea - are the twelve nations, qualified for the Olympic Games 2004 in Athens.
Germany (13th), but specially the Dutch team, are the unlucky losers in this first important decision of these Worlds...

Zoltan Jordanov:“Our dream has come true! It was a great day for us and I am proud with the achievement of our girls- apart from Beth Tweddle all of them are debutants in World Championships! Hard work has paid back!”

Also New Zealand have made good progress. Finland had problems with pre-competition injuries. Poland, after a good start on Vault struggled.

Subdivision 8 - the last:
(Sri Lanka, MG7 (Cameroon, Guatemala), Australia, Switzerland, Columbia, Ukraine)
It was obviously up to two of the most elegant teams in these Championships, Ukraine and Australia, to make the final “corrections” in the Olympic Qualification List!
>> Ukraine opened with very strong Vault and scored 37.011. Aljona Kvasha with 9.225 average may have reached Vault Final.
As may Krasnynska displace Khorkina from the U.Bars final, after having scored 9.537. Yarotska – 9.525, also on Bars!

100 years WC in Artistic Gymnatics

ANAHEIM 2003: QUALIFICATION FOR OLYMPIA
High demands in terms of the Olympic qualification are not to advantage for the smaller nations, which don’t have such a strong team as the bigger ones:
- the 12 best nations (every nation with 6 men and 6 women) qualify directly for Athens 2004
- nations ranked 13th to 19th are allowed to send 2 gymnasts to Athens
- from the 19th rank on every nation has 1 ticket (max. of 10) and
- the FIG is able to give 3+1 single tickets to special gymnasts
WHO ARE THE FAVOURITES?
Among the women the US-girls will probably fight hard against the top-nations of Romania and Russia. Under the current final conditions everything seems to be possible among the 8 best nations (3 gymnasts). For the further much sought after 4 Olympic tickets apply nearly twice as much nations, which are mostly in common conditions: Belarus, Italy, Canada, Hungary, Bulgaria … even Germany.

Khorkina - 3rd all-around title?

Among the men it doesn’t look much different. There is also a relatively clear formation of the favourites. No-one doubts about the Chinese team to fight the gold medal, especially against Romania and the USA. How strong will titleholder Belarus be and how can Russia, Ukraine, France, Japan and Korea perform?
Many candidates for the few Olympic tickets! The performance of the day, stability and content of the exercises will decide who is among the 12 best teams: even Italy, Latvia, Spain, Canada, Cuba, Greece and Germany… they all can make it. Too many nations for only 12 tickets…

The Japanese team led a long time, scored 227,046 points, and came on second place, followed by Olympic Champion China (225,119), Romania (224,770), Korea, Russia, France, Ukraine, Canada, Spain, Italy and Germany...that are all qualified nations for the Olympics 2004.
Best in all-around was the Japanese Naoya Tsukahara with a score of 57,224 points, followed by Paul Hamm (USA) and Yong, Tae-Yung (KOR)

At the firts day the Japanese men's team topped Romania by over two points.
Also before the last subdivision, Romania's Marian Dragulescu was ranked second behind Tsukahara. Tsukahara's teammates Hiroyuki Tomita and Takehiro Kashima ranked third and fourth.
Marian Dragulescu (Romania) earned the highest score of the day to this moment: 9.825 on the vault.

Romania made a strong rotation on vault, but had some difficulty on the parallel bars, high bar, and also floor exercises.....

But than came China in the fourth subdivision: 'They did great,' coach Yubin Huang said. 'That's what we wanted, safe and smooth.' The Chinese had 225.119 points, almost two points behind Japan. Romania and Russia, were third and fourth. Ukraine, the silver medalists in Sydney, struggled to finish fifth.
... and it was not a surprise, that Russia ranked third (now fourth)after the 6th subdivision.
- Nemov performed 4 exercises only, without pommel and rings, but he scored a top serie: FX 9,537; VA 94,87; PB 9,687; HB 9,775 !
- Krylov crashed on floor, but Russia scored top on this apparatus, temporary: 37,499.
- Only Bondarenko and Podgorni started on all six apparatuses, Podgorni scored 55,435 as the best Russian;

Naoya Tsukahara, best in AA

Tsukahara was runner-up at the 1999 worlds which were held just prior to the Sydney Olympics where he placed a disappointing 18th overall.
'I have been working hard in practice,' said Tsukahara, the son of Japanese legend Mitsuo Tsukahara. 'If you aren't feeling good mentally you can't show your skill so I am trying to stay positive.'
Tsukahara is hoping for a strong showing in Anaheim and to carry that confidence over to next year's Olympics in Athens.
Japan is also looking to re-establish itself in the world after not sending a team to the last full-size world championships in Belgium in 2001 because of security concerns following the Sept 11 terror attacks.
Japan once dominated the Worlds by winning the men's team gold medal five times in a row from 1962 to 1978 and also in the Olympics from 1960 to 1976.
