>> Canadian Trials: Detailed Results Purnell, the leader after the first day, totalled 73.125 points in a gruelling competition which required the 14 entries to do an all around event on Saturday and Sunday.
Banville, a triple gold medallist at the national championships in May, took second at 72.950 while Lydia Williams of Toronto was third at 72.875.

‘’I hadn’t competed in awhile and it was great to comeback again and put down this kind of performance,’’ said Purnell, 17, who returned to competition after missing the nationals with a back and wrist injury. ‘’It was right up there with one of my best. I came here very well prepared. I worked hard in training and was ready to compete over two days.’’

Banville, fourth after Saturday’s competition, charged back showing the form which has seen her emerge as one of Canada’s best gymnasts this year. ‘’Everything went well for me today (Sunday),’’ said Banville, 16. ‘’It was my first trials at this level and the pressure was unbelievable. It was really tense in the gym. I just focused on my own thing and didn’t worry about anything else.

Rounding out the top-eight were Amélie Plante of Joliette, Que., fourth at 72.300, Gael Mackie of Vancouver fifth at 71.750, Richelle Simpson of Toronto sixth at 70.325, Kylie Stone of Calgary seventh at 69.900 and Laura-Ann Chong of Vancouver eighth at 68.325.

The other team selections will be based not only on this weekend’s trials but also on performances since last November. Six athletes go to Pan Ams and seven to worlds.
Also in the Canadian team will be reigning Canadian national champion

Meanwhile the men’s teams for Pan Ams and world championships were confirmed following a training camp in Calgary.
The world team is comprised of Alexander Jeltkov of0 Montreal, Kyle Shewfelt and Grant Golding of Calgary, Richard Ikeda and Ken Ikeda of Abbotsford, B.C., David Kikuchi of Halifax and Casey Sandy of Mississauga, Ont.

The Pan Am team members are Rhett Stinson of Saskatoon, Adam Wong and Nathan Gafuik of Calgary, Jared Walls and Brandon O’Neill of Edmonton and Eric Kaska of Burlington, Ont..

Regardless Beth’s unclear landing on Vault (her third piece of apparatus), which, unfortunately affected her bad ankle, she performed a stunning routine on her last apparatus, the A. Bars, to win not only the all-around victory but also the Pat Hirst Memorial Plate for Highest score on A. Bars, 9.475, and the Elite Trophy, for highest single piece score on Bars, Beam, or Floor).
One of the hottest contenders for the title, Nicola Willis from South Essex, fell off the A. Bars earlier in the competition and took the forth place, 34.025. Fifth was Lizzie Line from Pinewood, 33.400, and sixth- Cherrelle Fennell from Wigan, 33.375.

The composer presented the symphony as his vision of the U.S.A. Kateřina (aged 19) had the same vision when performing her exercises. One year ago this olympionist from Sydney underwent difficult medical trauma and she was very keen to come back to the national team. Just in Anaheim, U.S.A., which is in 4 weeks the destination of Czech men and women teams, the venue of 2003 World Championships.
Kateřina will fly too, her comeback was successful. And the two old and at the same time new all around national champions shall fly together with her. During the last weekend Jana Komrsková (aged 20) won again the title after the hard struggle in the city of Ostrava. The men's title got again Martin Konečný (aged 19).
Jana Komrsková, the most experienced of the field of athletes, added more three titles in finals to her all around gold medal and then with a smile of satisfaction let the gold on floor to her rivals: ' I wished to do the girls joy. Some of them are still struggling for their place in the team. I have already reached that of mine. And in one month and a half in Anaheim I shall be even better.'

One of them measure the time to take-off for World Championships also for Martin Konečný (Hradčany Praha). One year ago he became the junior European High Bar Champion. He had made his routine more rich to the world level with 5 flight elements four of them in connection. In the all around competition he turned the high bar so fiercely that the construction collapsed and he had to repeat his routine with 2 strong men as additional weights. His personal coach Oldřich Otava says: regarding the circumstances we are happy to win the all around title again and the gold medal on floor. We are looking forward to high bar in Anaheim. Martin Vlk a David Vyoral (both Zlín) confirmed being in an increasing shape.
