* fig --: From March 22 – 24, Doha (QAT) hosted a stage on the Men’s and Women’s Artistic World Cup Circuit for the third consecutive year.
A FIG-label category A event, this stopover is on its way to become a don’t-miss event on the international circuit and a stage of reference for the Gulf region.
After the world cup event in Montreal, followed by the World Cup Cottbus now the 3rd world cup event in a row of three weekends only (!)  48 male (17 nations) and 21 femal gymnasts (12 nations) representing 20 different countries are registered.

Herman Weingärtners Olympic Medal stolen

Herman Weingärtner: 3 victories, 5 medals at the I. Olympic Games

According to a report by the "Japanese Association for the promotion of Sports and Health" the Olympic Medal belonging to the German gymnast Hermann Weingärtner from Frankfurt - from the first Olympic Games 1896 in Athens was stolen from a museum in Tokio - by who, is unknown.  The winner plakets (the grading Gold / Silver / Bronze were only introduced later) was taken from an unlocked, unguarded vitrine.

Weingärtners family had given the (highbar-) medal to the Japanese Olympic Winner of the all-around competition, Yukio ENDO in 1964 out of respect of his win, as a gift.

"The medal is of unmeasurable value for the sports in Japan and in the world", said the frustrated Japanese museum representatives.

The second world cup event of artistic gymnastics of the new 2010 circuit  finished on Sunday with the second part of final events in Cottbus, Germany.
It was the 34th anniversary of this traditional event.
Altogether 108 participants (72 men, 36 women) representing 24 different nations arrived in Cottbus .
At the end of the Sunday's finals the winners came from five different countries on men's and four different nations on the women's side...
The most successful gymnast was the Canadian Kristina Vaculik, winning on the uneven bars and on the floor, together with the Polish Marta Pihan-Kulesza...

Russian Gymnast Kristina Goryunova suspended in Moscow

Kristina GORYUNOVA suspended ...

The Russian media reported, that the rising Russian gymnast Kristina GORYUNOVA will not be able to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games after being suspended for one year by the Russian Gymnastics Federation, this week for using banned medication. Local media wrote that the samples taken from the 17-year-old at the national championships in November 2009, contained traces of the forbidden substance (one of furosemide analogues).
Goryunova justified the results by saying she was taking a food additive trying to lose weight, adding she did not know that it contained the banned substance.
The decision means Goryunova, Russia's champion and two-time winner on the 2009 World Cup (Maribor), the right to participate in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Womens competition cancelled completely...

"Gymnix - was nothing ..."!
Even if it sounds promising in the range of a socalled B-World Cup, a few days before the 34th Cottbuss Tournament: The World Cup System of the FIG is definitely "out"!
A meager 11 gymnasts from 6 nations got "lost" to the 1. World Cup season, which was meant to be a season opening, to the traditional "GYMNIX-competitions" to Montreal, together with another 4 Canadian athletes...Because of a lack of participation the womens competitions were cancelled completely...
Weak really, those who signed themselves into the winner lists, weak also the World Cup points that were given in the always more meaningless ranking lists...

All the more one must value the coming B-World Cup in Cottbus, which even though the "big names" are missing, 23 guest nations actively acknowledged.
The Lausations have honestly worked for and earned their name as fantastic hosts since over 3 centureis. But even they don't have an answer for the question,"Quo vadis, Weltcup".

The changes that were announced to take place as of 2011  by the FIG unfortunately came years too late for the practise.
They also seemed to be half hearted from the beginning, bridle the horse from the back:

Instead of testing the entire system of the international competition rhythmisation for it's integral parts, to find new order,  also in an arrangement of meaning "from top to bottom" - starting from the given Olympic 4 year frame around the world - to the continental championships -  Wolfgang Willam Boss of the competitions commission, assigned from the FIG with this problematic said to us "I know about this problematic but I thought to myself: let's just start first with the World Cup system..."!
  It is not known, whether one undertakes such thoughts from the beginning with the UEG and the other continental federations, or (again) chooses the FIG- solo route as a draft...!?

At the latest, when one in due time has established the 100th champion at World and European Championships in the new century, one will realise that one needs more complex solutions for the international calendar!
The resourceful Swiss with their "Swiss Cup" have long gone other ways and have had gymnastics before a full hut, also the Japanese (Japan-Cup) and US-Americans (American Cup) organised their own invitation competitions as they pleased.
Also Cottbus will have to come up with something!

Series winner Japan wins the International Junior Team-Cup for the 5th time


And again the European juniors were frustrated with the success of the japanese young gymnasts qualities :
For the 5 time in a row,  JAPANS young league won in Berlin in the big sports hall at the Weißenseer Weg also the "15. International Junior Team Cup 2020" and showed off all its new talent:
With 247,350 points the Japanese quartett won ahead of SPAIN I (245,750) and SWITZERLAND (244,350). Like in the previous year the host assortment of  the SC Berlin managed the best German representatives on 7th position out of 26 teams in total from 17 nations and 3 continents.
A strong impression was made especially by the Spaniards, who had the singles winner of the Juniors Fabian Gonzales.
Here too the best gymnast from Berlin in the Juniors Philipp Herder (80,950) with a strong 6th place  ...

Again an absolutely strong starter field came together, also if some of the European top nations did not attend, like Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and also the Brits.
The trainer experts estimated that the best nations would lay closely together, tight results were proof of this.
Brasils youngsters, from the country of a Daniel Hypolito, shone on the vault. The Canadians, and their "Maple Leaf" which reminded of past Olympics Winterdays, brought their strong singles gymnast Robert Watson , who just by a little, missed the podium.

Mannschaft Jordanien kam zum Lernen nach Berlin

The guest of honor from Switzerland, the 90-year old Hans Tschudi, who was once led Egypts national team 1952 to the Olympic Games to Helsinki, was happy that even Jordanien attended with a team, even if they were far behind on last place:
".. no matter which position one takes in the end, but it shows that gymnastics is also developed there where one invests in the youth"- said the Senior, whom the Berliners engaged in the prize giving ceremony.

Berlins responsible trainer Steffen JAHN was happy with the achievements of the boys: " 7th place like in the last year and best German team, that is o. k.! Especially Philipp Herder did well as 6th in the juniors. He proved his good preparation and most importantly showed some very offensive gymnastics. If there hadn't been a stability mistake on the pommel horse, he would have even landed further ahead.."

Best German gymnast in the age group 15/16 of the youngsters was Daniel Weinert from Kiel, who like Philipp Herder showed a balanced all-around performance in the junios. In the Junior classes the physically most developed Spaniards with their best, Fabian GONZALES, compared to the delicate Asians and had the singles winner sharing points with the also very balanced Jim ZONA afrom Lyon, France..:

The whole Japanese team prepared the bars - and the smallest, Kenta Chiba, (ri.) was the best in the end!

In each performance, the smallest, the 13-year old Kenta CHIBA, got a lot of applause. It was impressive to see, that he had to jump quite high to get his hands on the high bar and basically had control of the apparatus in a proped position.
In the prize giving he recieved, with beaming eyes, the winner medal from the 78 years older Swiss ex-trainer Hans TSCHUDI (91). And again the small guy had to stretch when he wanted to put his arms around his colleague Clerc Remy ...!

JAPANS chosen joungsters win for the 5th time in a row the International Junior Team Cup in Berlin, ahead of SPAINEN (le.) and ahead of SWITZERLAND I.

Niklas Niethack, Philipp Herder, Viet THao Hoang: the Berliner at the end on 7th place!

From German perspective, the conclusion of the responsible young gymnasts trainer Gunter Schönherr  , who used this competition as a first national Young European Championship-qualification, was "dense": "Really adequate are Philipp Herder (SC Berlin) and Ivan Rittschik (Chemnitz), all the other 10 parttaking athletes of the Geran league still have deficits, which they need to work at in the next 3 weeks before the second test in the training camp Kienbaum."
At the end of March then each league circle should be tightened, to those which will take part in the competition preparation for the youth-European Championships (JEM).
As well as this there are the traditional four country comparisons against the British hosts as well as agains France and Switzerland in Ipswich (GBR), followed by a last country comparison in the Czech Republic against the hosts and against Poland. Then the European title competitions start quite early in the year in Bermingham....
On this way, Berlin was a first but meaningful step.

US-gymnastics ---:The 2009 worlds all-around silver medallist  Rebecca Bross (60,550) (USA) and Maxim Devyatovsky of Russia won the women’s and men’s all-around titles, respectively, at the 2010 Tyson American Cup, the United States most prestigious invitational, at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. Alexandra Raisman of Needham, Mass., and Jonathan Horton of Houston both finished second, with the USA’s Chris Brooks of Houston claiming the men’s bronze. 
Rounding out the top three was Venezuela’s Jessica Lopez with a 56.500. Ariella Kaeslin of Switzerland and Yuko Shintake of Japan were fourth (56.050) and fifth (56.000).

For the men, Devyatovsky scored a 90.600 total, finishing 0.450 ahead of Horton’s 90.150.
Brooks tallied an 89.900 for a third, edging out defending champion Fabian Hambuechen of Germany, who had an 89.000.
Daniel Keatings of Great Britain finished fifth at 88.650.
“I am very, very glad to have won,” said Devyatovsky. “It was important to me because in 1986, 24 years ago, an athlete (Alexei Tikhonkikh) from the former Soviet Union and my hometown was a winner of the American Cup and an American girl (Kristie Phillips) won at that competition as well. So I am very glad!”

10th Africa Championships began in Namibia

FIG-Expert group supports Egyptian gymnastics federation

In preparation of the 10th Africa Championships 2010, which will take place in Namibia from the 28th February until the 13th of March, an FIG-expert group tarried in Cairo, Egypt.
Under the leadership of trainer Dieter Hofmann (Switzerland) aswell as Bruno Franceschetti (ITA) - the ex-trainer of the Italian rings-legend Yuri Chechi andJewgeni Schendery (Canada) a training camp took place in the Olympics Center of the Egyptian capital.

The aim of this course was, to give support to the gymnasts of the African zone 1 (Egypt, Tunesia, Algeria and Marocco) in preparation of their big continental event.
Parallel to this there was also a course for trainers and those active in the junior leagues of these countries.
In total 18 trainers, 14 female gymnasts and 17 male gymnasts took part in this course. Trainera and gymnasts showed a great willingness to take up partially new for them, modern training methods.
<< Dieter Hofmann (Switzerland) was impressed by a row of talented and enthusiastic youths and juniors: "They could have a big future, if they are supported and systematically trained....!"

Hofmann spoke about experienced, about the complexity of the properties of modern training and competition systems, for the longterm build up of achievements of the gymnasts and about personal experiences in the preparation of teams and single gymnasts for large scale events.

In two training parts daily there were additional lectures about techinques, technicalities and methodology of basis structures in the acrobatics of forward and backward vaults, at the pommel-horse, about behaviour while hanging and supporting on the bars and the wave-movements on the high bar. 

Im Training wurden gute Erfahrungen bei der Entwicklung von Voraussetzungen in Beweglichkeit, Kraft und technischen Grundelementen vermittelt. Bei all den Veranstaltungen in Theorie und Praxis waren interessierte Vertreter der Führung der EGF zugegen.
Dem großen Engagement der Trainer und Turner steht derzeit noch der Widerspruch entgegen, dass man all zu gern den "dritten" Schritt, vor dem ersten und zweiten machen möchte ...
Vor allem dies sind  auch die Beweggründe, weshalb beabsichtigt wird, diese Konsultationen über Trainingsplanung, Erarbeitung von Trainings- u. Wettkampfprogrammen zielgerichtet fort zu setzen.

No Limitation for Non-Olympic Manipulation...!

The Chinese gymnast DONG Fanxiao should not have been allowed to participate in the Olympic Summergames in Sydney in 2000, because she was too young, established the World Gymnastics Federation FIG.
Then, 10 years ago, Dong Fanxiao  was 14 years ofl and not 17 years old, as she had stated.
According to the FIG-Disciplinary Commission this is a violation of the rules. Dongs Olympics-results were invalidated. At the moment there is a FIG petition at the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which states that the Bronze medal in the Chinese Team assessment should not be recognized. Therewith the USA would move up to third place. Zhang Haifeng, speaker of the Olypmic Committee of China, regards the situation as being "history" in the Chinese media. "This happened in the year 2000. We are now writing the year 2010".

Chinese gymnasts at Sydney OG

LAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, February 27, 2010: The FIG Executive Committee has ruled in the case involving two Chinese gymnasts suspected of having falsified their dates of birth for the Olympic Games in Sydney (AUS) in 2000, putting an end to the proceedings.
In the case of Dong Fangxiao, the F.I.G. Executive Committee constituted that there was a violation to the FIG Statutes and Regulations. Consequently, the results obtained by Dong Fangxiao at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games have been cancelled. The FIG Executive Committee decision was forwarded to the IOC Executive Board with the recommendation to withdraw the Bronze medal obtained by the Chinese Team including the results of Dong Fangxiao in Sydney.
In addition, the FIG Executive Committee pronounced the cancellation of all results obtained by Dong Fangxiao at the 34th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships 1999 in Tianjin (CHN), of all results obtained at the FIG World Cup Series 1999 - 2000 and at the Artistic Gymnastics 2000 World Cup Final in Glasgow (GBR).
The costs of the disciplinary procedure are awarded to the Chinese Gymnastics Association.

Strong regret to FIG's sanction on former Chinese gymnast

BEIJING, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Gymnastics Association (CGA) on Saturday expressed strong regret to International Gymnastics Federation (FIG)'s sanction on former Chinese artistic gymnast Dong Fangxiao.
In a press release, the CGA said," From the concrete and objective evidence available, there is no problem in Dong Fangxiao's age and thereafter we feel greatly regret to FIG's sanction."

International Tournament on Madeira cancelled ...

* fig -: Due to the catastrophic flooding that overshadowed the region, organisers of the 14th International Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics Tournament on Madeira Island in Funchal (POR) have cancelled the event, originally scheduled for February 26 – 28, 2010.
With a strong tradition in gymnastics, Portugal stands out as a dynamic country that organises a variety of international FIG calendar events in every discipline.
In 2010, World Cup and Series events will take place in Portimao in March (Rhythmic), Ponta Delgada (Aerobic) in April / May, Porto in June (Artistic) and in Loulé in September (Trampoline).
