ŠIŠKA Gym International 2005 - First Day s qualifications

Everyone was welcomed warmly by mouse “Miška” for the qualifications of the 9th ŠIŠKA Gym International.

The last test before the World Championships in Melbourne didn’t go too well for the two Romanians Leonida and Eremia who had quite a few problems today.

Far better presented themselves the girls from the Netherlands Lichelle Wong (35.900) and Danila Koster (34.800) who reached the ranks 1 and 2 in the all-around of this qualification.
Floarea Leonida (ROM) (photo. left) ended up only on rank 3 (34.125)…
Romania's Floarea Leonida started badly with a fall on her 1st vault and an also not perfectly executed Yurchenko 1/1 twist as 2nd vault (8.300).
No falls or major errors but a few insecurities and not perfectly executed elements then followed on uneven bars and beam. Her floor routine included a tucked full-in, double somersault bw. piked (landed out of bounds) and a triple twist of which the rotation was not finished (8.000/ SV 9.400).

Her teammate Alexandra Eremia competed only on beam where she fell after her combination of ff – ff - split layout bw. and then also touched the floor with her hands on her double somersault bw. tucked dismount (7.900/ SV 9.400).

The hosts from the “ŠIŠKA Gim Klub” could be happy with the performance of their young talent Alenka Dolničar. In front of home crowds the 14-year-old gymnast presented an energetic competition. Coach Mitija Samardžija was visibly relieved after she stuck the dismount of her beam routine (somersault fw. tucked with 1/1 turn) which included the nice combination of split leap – somersault bw. tucked and a strong somersault fw. tucked.

ŠIŠKA Gym International 2005 - Finals

Final Day in Ljubljana

Today took place the apparatus finals at the 9th ŠIŠKA Gym International in Ljubljana/ Slovenia.

Like it was visible already in yesterday’s qualification, the highest difficulties were missing also today during the finals but most of the competitors managed to show their routines solidly.

Winning overall 6 medals, the Dutch gymnasts once again were the most successful. Floarea Leonida (ROM) presented herself slightly improved compared to yesterday but still not very consistent.

Uneven bars
In an overall not too strong final Lichelle Wong managed to win her 2nd medal of the day despite of a fall from the upper bar. Her team mate Danila Koster clearly dominated this final and won with a beautiful routine including nice Stalders, well-reached handstand positions and a double twist dismount. Leonida left out content and in the end fell while going from the lower to the upper bar

BEAM
The beam final was a narrow decision between Wong and Leonida who both had routines with a SV of 9.800. Lichelle Wong presented her routined a bit more fluent and with a better execution including the interesting combination Onodi - somersault bw. tucked. This in the end brought her the victory. An interesting and well executed routine including the combination tucked somersault fw. – tucked somersault bw. was presented by the young Polish talent Paula Plichta.

The colossus might of China in gymnastics was on show again in Macau yesterday as they finished one-two in both men's and women's all-round finals of the EAST ASIAN GAMES 2005.
Zhang Nan and Fan Ye swept the women's event with 37.974 and 34.949 points,

ZHANG, Nan (CHN), ...but no medals at event finals!

The experienced Chinese girls had to overcome a slow start in Macao as they were placed third, fourth and the sixth at the first rotation. Fan, Ye the beam gold medallist at the World Championships 2003 and the National Games, broke ground to take the lead after jumping off the uneven bar.
Zhang, Nan - the all-around bronze medallist from Anaheim 2003 - then raced to the top of the 18-player standings with excellent performances on the bars, before giving a flawless floor show that earned the 47th gold for China.
Oshima Kyoko (JPN) took the bronze and another Chinese, Pang Panpan, had to settle for the fourth place because of a modest uneven bar performance in the second rotation.

UEG decided dates of 2006 continental Championships

During its extraordinary meeting held on November 1st 2005 in Lausanne, the President’s Board of the European Gymnastics Federation UEG has definitely entrusted the 2006 European artistic gymnastics Championships to the town of Volos in Greece.
The women's Europeans will be held from 2006 April 27 to 30 and the men's Europeans from 2006, May 4 to 7, 2006.
The city Volos (326 km. from Athens, 215 km. from Thessaloniki) is the capital and economic centre of the prefecture. Thanks to its privileged position at the foot of Mt. Pelion on the Pagasitic gulf, it is a good base for enjoying the sea, wooded slopes, and green valleys that surround it. As for the derivation of the word 'Volos', which according to a Byzantine historian of the 14th century was called 'Golos', there are several theories:
