Romanian National Olympic Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Team dissolved

Romanian Olympians May Miss Worlds
A weekend escapade by several members of the senior women's team has put Romania's world medal chances in jeopardy in 2005, Romanian newspaper 'Gazeta Sporturilor' reported yesterday.
After weeks and even months of disputes between gymnasts, club coaches and national team coaches Octavian Belu and Mariana Bitang, on Monday the Romanian National Olympic Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Seniors Team has been dissolved.
Both coaches furthermore requested a cancellation of their contracts with the Romanian Gymnastics Federation and the Romanian Olympic Committee. Gymnasts have been send home to continue training at home clubs...
The scandal has a chronology which runs as follows:
- Last weekend in the night from Saturday to Sunday, Catalina Ponor and Floarea Leonida, while being in Bucharest in training camp, left the hotel without informing their coaches (backdoor) and went to a club where a member of the men’s national junior team celebrated his 18th birthday with a majority-party. Returning to the hotel at 4 am in the morning they where received at the entrance of the hotel by national coaches Octavian Belu and Mariana Bitang as well as Romanian National Television TVR, after journalists and photographers informed officials that both gymnasts attend this birthday event, “consuming beverages with ice and lemon slices” (turning out to having been cola).
Both (former) national coaches (B&B) declared that the national team has not been dissolved on their request.
All gymnasts, including suspended Monica Rosu however recently presumed that Belu and Bitang want to “get rid of” all current gymnasts on the seniors team in view of the next Olympic Games in Beijing 2008 intending to replace them by juniors currently training at the national juniors center in Deva.

Belu declared that he does not want to work with t h i s team anymore later even saying “I am never going to coach the national team again”.
According to Romanian Olympic Committee officials he is conversely willing to negotiate new conditions under which he would return to a new national seniors squad…
Octavian Belu stated that he is not willing to make compromises to any further extent. He has particular expectations to the gymnasts he’s working with; both regarding team training intensity and training volume, as well as physical condition and motivation. Admitting that this centralized system is dating from communist times he justifies it with the undoubtedly remarkable results he achieved during his career as a coach within the Romanian national gymnastics structures.

Gymnasts will be accompanied by home club coaches in case they should be selected to compete in the World Championships, selections being held at the National Championships in mid-October.
The next national team will probably be made up of the juniors national team currently coached by Nicolae Forminte (- former coach of Simona Amanar) who will probably also become successor to Belu as the National Seniors Team Head Coach.

Coach legend L. Arkajew in Gym-Camp

The most successful coach in the history of artistic gymnastics, world famous Leonid Arkajew is currently neither president of the Russian Gymnastics Federation nor coach of the Russian national team anymore, but is holding functionary appointments only.

Factually, at present, Arkajew is nothing more but a “coach legend”; however for retirement from gymnastics he considers himself a number of years under age.
Thus he is not only paying attention to Russian gymnastics talents, yet accepted to attend a training camp of Slovakian talents in Trnava (SVK) following an invitation of Slovak Gymnastics Federation president Jan Novák.

Ioachim OANA: I still feel guilty!

In case of Raducan 2000...
After five years of silence, the Romanian doctor Ioachim Oana, who gave Andreea Raducan the Nurofen pill prior to the all-around competition after which she tested positive for a banned substance and lost her AA-title, accepted to give Romania’s second sports newspaper 'PROSPORT' an interview where he talks and answers questions about the “Nurofen-case” around Andreea Raducan adding together more details....

Andreea Raducan, disqualified in Sydney!

Asked whether he is still in contact with Andreea Raducan from that moment in Sydney on, he declares:
I.O.: -- “Yes, our relationship is as good as ever, despite the fact the many people asked her to guilt me in public for the things that happened. I still call her to wish her Happy Birthday, and so does she.”

He declares to still maintain relations to the team coaches and that he has been even proposed returning to the team in his function as the team doctor (I. Oana was expelled from the Sydney 2000 OG and banned for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games as well as barred from participating in the World, European Championships and any other FIG-sponsored international events for four years = until 2005):
I.O.:--- I’m regularly talking to Octavian Belu and Mariana Bitang and even requested to go back to the team however just when I decided to return, the Petrovschi-Scandal started off.
With regard to that, Oana asserts that injuries like those of Petrovschi are unfortunately common among all gymnasts, resulting from practicing and training a competitive sport.

The article entitled “Three mouthfuls of water” (a quote of Andreea) features a very up-to-date interview/-portrait as well as recent pictures of of the Romanian gymnast who talks about her activities both throughout her competitive gymnastics career (especially comments on the Sydney-episode) as well as after, her life right now and her plans for the future.

Asked about why she “always hides”, Andreea responds that she doesn’t like being a public person, always being featured in the press. Quote: “If I would be in the papers all the time, people would get bored seeing my face over and over again”.

The article alludes to the happenings at the Olympic Games in Sydney, 2000, where Raducan was stripped of her all-around gold medal after testing positive for a banned substance in a drug (Nurofen®) she was given unintentionally by team doctor Ioachim Oana after reporting headache and fever during podium training.
„Three mouthfuls of water“ is a quote of Andrea Raducan since in the interview, she retrospectively supposes that if she would have taken the pill with „Two or three mouthfuls of water“ instead of swallowing it just with saliva (being on the podium, working on the balance beam at the moment) it might not have been that concentrated in the sample she provided after the AA-competition, testing positive later-on.

Ironically, according to the Summary of Key Changes to the WADA Prohibited List 2004, published by WADA in 2003, the banned substance „pseudoephidrine“ in Nurofen®, that made her test positive:
(…) „...has been removed from the banned list from Jan 1st. This is good news as it means that athletes can take many decongestant remedies, which were previously prohibited (e.g. Codral, Coldrex, Nurofen Cold and Flu, Sudafed) to alleviate symptoms of the common cold... (…).

She is still in touch with Ioachim Oana and considers him not guilty, describing him as “a very nice person; a sentimentalist” .

On the question how much money she still owns from her times as a gymnast she tells Gazeta that although she was offered and signed an advantageous contract with the manufacturing company of Nurofen, half of them got spent quickly and she even finds herself without money sometimes.

... still dreams of performing on the beam!

Dragulescu is back, ...getting everything!

At a session of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation Marian Dragulescu, who retired recently from competitive gymnastics, negotiated under which conditions he would come back and compete until 2008 and onwards (“As long as my bones will carry me”)
In detail he negotiated:
- To drop the all-around and compete on a maximum three apparatuses in the upcoming World Championships. Probably he is going to compete only floor and vault from now onwards.
- Lighter training and preparation program...
To schedule, manage and negotiate all contracts regarding his image as well as his appearances in exhibition-competitions all over the world on his own, completely independent from the Romanian Gymnastics Federation.

Monica Rosu and Alexandra Eremia excluded from Olympic squad

The Executive Committee of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation has decided to exclude Olympic vault and team champion Monica Rosu as well as Olympic team Champion Alexandra Eremia (who underwent surgery for appendix removal recently) from the Olympic Team and due to persisting weight problems and ongoing display of lack of motivation. Both gymnasts were sent home to continue their training at their home clubs in Bacau (Rosu) and Steaua (Eremia), separated from the Olympic team’s training center in Deva.

Octavian Belu

Adrian Stoica, the secretary general of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation put it even harder: “When they will walk the talk and show that they are willing to commit themselves to competitive sports, the doors will be open.”

Belu further said that Catalina Ponor will show up in Melbourne with a completely modified routine on floor. As Belu doesn’t want to compete with mediocre athletes, in the worst case Romania will show up in Melbourne with only 2 gymnasts: Catalina Ponor (beam, floor).
