Grand Prix Glasgow: World Cup

Squeezed between the 'DTB Cup' (Germany) and Maribor 'Solomunov Memorial' (Slovenia), the Glasgow Grand Prix attracted none but the brave and the enduring.
The Glasgow Men’s Floor Champion was Canada’s Brandon O'Neil. The battle on Rings saw Yuri Van Gelder of Nederlands just win Gold ahead of Russia’s Alexander Safoshkin. Lesnek Blanik of Poland won the Vault Gold. Dezhi Li of China was an easy winner of the Parallel Bars Final with a superb display of difficulty above, through and below the Bars. On High Australia’s Phillippe Rizzo take the Gold, 2 tenths ahead of the World’s greatest High Bar expert, Aljaz Pegan of Slovenia. ..
<< Great Britain had it’s greatest Grand Prix day with Men’s and Women’s medals; so Beth Tweddle was the most successful gymnast ...

23rd DTB-Cup: Second day of finals

During the 23rd DTB-Cup - Worldcup - in Stuttgart, the Russian Nikolai Krjukov achieved the first rank of the pommel horse final, after top runner Marius Urzica (ROM) had dropped out in the qualification already.
Lais Souza (BRA) won the women's vault final.
There were two champions in the high bar final: After the spectators' reclamations, Aljaz Pegan's (SLO) score was upvalued, so that he achieved the same position as Vlasios Maras from Greece.

Front-runner and threefold Olympic Champion Catalina Ponor from Romania won the beam final. ....
Brandon O'Neill from Canada won the floor final in the end.

Nikolai Krjukov (RUS): '...I'm very satisfied!'

Ioan Suciu with excellent elements on one pommel before the end of his exercise.
Victor Cano showed very attractive straddles across and the youngest of the field Lousi Smith from Great Britain presented all versions across, partly done with vigor in the end, however.

Lais Souza (BRA): - Brazil, best nation in women's category!

Aljaz Pegan (SLO) explained Krukov: 'I was shure, it was a clearly 10 start value!'

Twofold World Champion (2001/ 02) and winner of the qualification Vlasios Maras presented an excellent performance , including a Kovacs with one turn and a lot of elegantly performed turns, which made the high score of 9,750 justified.
The Chinese Zhou, Kai foozled with the Def and had to leave the apparatus.
Valeri Goncharov was unlucky, too, he fell during his Kovacs with a turn.
Robert Juckel , who had been the German hope after the dropping- out of Fabian Hambüchen, did the ducked Markelow well, but had to accept deductions due to his open legs during the Stalder-revulsions and in the end (double Tsukahara straight with a big lunge).
After some discussions, Pegan's score was upvalued and was then equal with the one of champion Maras - hence there were two champions in the high bar final of the DTB-Cup 2005.

Catalina Ponor (ROM) - first mobile phone contacts with home after the competition!

The Chinese's ranking on the second position led to amazement - in front of vice European Champion on this apparatus und allround European Champion Marine Debauve (FRA), who convinced with the longest exercise with many difficult elements and still only achieved the third rank.
Both gymnasts from the Ukraine had to leave the apparatus and the Australian Monette Russo had to leave the beam involuntarily after a long row.

German Junior National Team back from US Training Camp

After eleven days of practice at the Olympic Centre of the US National Olympic Commitee did the young athletes of the German junior team return home from Colorado Springs on Wednesday.

Beside of an official meet against the hosts was the main cause of the trip the practice together and the sharing of experience and practice methods with the US-boys...

From left: Coach Jens Milbradt, Klaus Nigel; Gymnasts: Marcel Nguyen, Max Finzel, Thomas Taranu, Micheal Stumpf, Helge Liebrich, Philipp Boy, Brian Gladow;
Physiotherapist Tobias Billert; Coach Karsten Oelsch;Judge Dr. Joerg Fetzer

Of course the visit was also a superbly possibility to get to know the country and people. There was next to a shopping tour also a day trip into the mountains around Colorado Springs on the program. Our boys saw within many other things the Royal George Bridge - the highest cable bridge of the world.
A great Thank You to all clubs, sponsors and gymnasts which made this trip possible. The German Gymnastics Federation (DTB) could only pay parts of the trip (caused of the 'promotion group 4', the lowest promotion level in Germany ).

23. DTB-Pokal: Five World Cup Winners crowned

At the 23rd 'DTB-POKAL 2005' there were five final decisions scheduled for today.
On vaulting table Anatoli Vasiliev (RUS) was the best performer.
On uneven bars there was a Chinese double success by Zhou, Zhuoru and Huang, Lu.
The final on parallel bars was won by the Slovenian Mitja Petkovsek , who already lead the qualification. On rings the Russian Alexander Safoshkin convinced with the strongest performance.
The women’s floor final was won by the Brasilian Daiane dos Santos .

Uneven Bars
1. Zhou, Zhuoru CHN (AW 10) 9,650
2. Huang. Lu CHN (10) 9,562
3. Polina Miller RUS (10) 9,537
4. Daria Zgoba UKR (10) 9,487
5. Marine Debauve FRA (10) 9,487
6. Jana Sikulova CZE (10) 9,400
7. Daiane dos Santos BRA (10) 9,337
8. Monette Russo AUS (10) 8,537
a. K. Kim Bui GER (9,80) 9,050

An exquisite uneven bars performance from the celestial empire! Superb technique, superb difficulties, superb execution ... Huang performed two Endos in el grip and a flawless double layout as dismount, for instance – she performed on a higher level than the further finalists.
The best follower-up to both Chinese gymnasts was the winner of qualification Polina Miller (RUS), who performed dynamically with Jaeger somersault, a piked Tkatchev and a tucked Tsukahara as dismount.

Thomas Andergassen (GER)

As first performer in this final the French Yann Cucherat made a huge mistake landing in sitting position after a Healy. Otherwise, a balanced final. It was evident, that only those gymnast had a chance to place high, who performed a routine with a start value of 10 points. The latest European Champions performed most elegantly on this apparatus, Tsolakidis (ECh 2002), Petkovsek (ECh 2000) and Carballo (present European Champion).
Once again the piked double somersault proved to be the standard dismount.

Alexander Safoshkin (RUS) - winner of the final

The favourite Juri van Gelder (NED), however, was not really able to stand up to the expectations, he could not avoid a swinging of the rings towards the end of his routine and had to step behind the better performing Russian.
The Olympic Champion Dimosthenis Tampakos (GRE) did not appear to be in WCh shape landing his layout Tsukahara dismount on the stomach.
An interesting element was presented by the French Danny Rodrigues with a swallow backwards, extremely difficult. He is the only gymnast of the world performing this element.
All finalists presented a start value of 10 points.
Women's Floor Exercise
1. Daiane Dos Santos BRA 9,450
2. Kathleen Lindor FRA 9,137
3. Imogen Cairns GBR 9,062
4. Lais Souza BRA 8,900
5. Valeriya Maksyuta UKR 8,775
6. Joanna Skowronska POL 8,400
7. Kim Bui GER 8,287
8. Jana Sikulova CZE 8,250

The scores are the best evidence: Throughout the world, gymnasts have the greatest difficulties on floor to perform according to the requirements.
It was no surprise that the winner of qualification and World Champion 2003, Daiane dos Santos (BRA) won this final – she performed the most difficult programme (SV 9,90) with a double layout, a double piked somersault and another double layout and double piked somersault at the end. Four acrobatic series in total.
Stuttgart’s Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle was well attended, even though not sold out, but there was still a great sentiment and a well functioning youth club which contributed to the atmosphere.

In the frame of today’s day of finals, two of the most successful German gymnasts were officially disbanded from the international sport scene: The multiple German Champions Birgit Schweigert and Yvonne Musik were said farewell by the president of the German Gymnastics Federation Rainer Brechtken and director of sports Wolfgang Willam .

DTB-Cup: Qualification

On the first day of the 23rd DTB-Cup 2005 the qualifications take place in Stuttgart.
Yesterday, the qualification on vault, ex-champion Oksana Chusovitina (UZB) took over the leading position, the best at uneven bars was the Russian Polina Miller .
Olympic Champion Catalina Ponor (ROM)
succeeded on the beam and ex-World Champion Daiane dos Santos (BRA) won the qualification on the floor.
On the 92 gymnasts of men’s qualifications this athletes were the best:
Floor - Patrick Dominguez (SUI), pommel horse - Zhang, Hongtao (CHN), rings - Juri van Gelder (NED), vault - Jeffrey Wammes (NED), parallel bars - Mitja Petkovsek (SLO), high bars - Vlasios Maras (GRE).
The qualification at uneven bars was dominated by the Russian Polina Miller , who set herself on top of the qualification with a score of 9,531 and left the Chinese Huang, Lu (9,487) and Marine Debauve ( 9,450) from France on the following ranks. The second Chinese Zhou, Zhuoru was fourth with 9,412 points.
Only seven out of 26 gymnasts at uneven bars had a basic score of 10 points.
The only German, who qualified on the floor was Kim Bui (8,700). Strangely enough, she will not make use of this place in the final, but will use the only Wildcard entitled to the host tomorrow at the uneven bars. Which clause in the rules permits that, stayed unclear so far... ...

It is remarkable that gymnasts from 15 (!) countries will participate in the apparatus finals – of which only one comes from Russia (Miller) and another from Romania (Ponor). The distribution of the final places shows that new times are dawning for the female artistic gymnasts: The Ukraine is on top with five participations in the finals, then Brazil, France and China follow with four participations each.
Men's Qualifications

Floor Exersice
The best on floor was the World Cup winner in Cottbus Patrick Dominguez (SUI) with 9,400 (SV 10) ahead of the Chinese Zou, Kai 9,325 and Daisuke Nakano (JPN/9,212).
Further finalists: Jeffrey Wammes (NED), the World Cup winner in Sao Paulo, Robert Gal (HUN) and Eugen Spiridonow (GER), Brandon O'Neill (CAN) and the only African starter from Tunisia Wajdi Habib Bouallegue . The former floor European Champion Marian Dragulescu (ROM) failed to qualify for the final due to a fall in his second series (8,775).
Vaulting Table
Jeffrey Wammes (NED) presented himself in excellent shape and won the qualification with a superb score of 9,681 points. The German Fabian Hambüchen managed to qualify for his first final at this World Cup – he placed third with 9,593 points. His team-mate Matthias Fahrig also qualified for the final on his favourite apparatus as eighth (9,437).
A good comeback for the Russian Alexei Bondarenko, who suffered a severe injury in the Olympic final and reches the final as seventh (9,444)!
Further placements: 2nd Anatoli Vasiliev (RUS/9,625), 4th Alin Jivan (ROM/9,575), 5th Patrick Dominguez (SUI/9,544), 6th Robert Gal (HUN/9,519).
Pommel Horse
Marius Urzica performed once again as if coming from another world. He is a most gifted gymnast on this apparatus - and makes a mistakes right at the end of his routine! Therefore, the Romanian did not made the final at his 12th participation in Stuttgart. Unknown Chineses point at Beijing 2008: Zhang, Hongtao won the qualification with 9,737 - in his first international competition...! 'Oldie' Nikolai Krukov (RUS) placed second with 9,662 out of ten points, Ioan Suciu rescues the Romainian honour with a third rank (9,587). The fourth rank is a huge success for the British Junior European Champion Louis Smith (9,562).
Further finalists: 5th Alexei Ignatovich (BLR/9,475), 6th Victor Cano (ESP/9,437), 7th Vid Hedvedgi (HUN/9,387), 8th Alberto Busnari (ITA/9,275).

10th Chinese National Games - Guangdong dominated

FAN, Ye and LU, Bo...

Chinese Xinhuanet reports that gymnastics giant in China Guangdong proved its superiority by taking four out of the 14 golds at the just-concluded gymnastics competition at the 10th National Games.
The Chinese Lu, Bo was the winner af the all-around men's titel and on Friday the balance beam world champion (Anaheim 2003), Fan, Ye won the all-around title in the women's category.

These 10th National Games were also a big national fight of all the Chinese provinces for the crown in sports...
On Friday World champion Fan Ye won the women's gymnastics all-round goldmedal for Hebei.
World champion Fan Ye stormed to women's gymnastics all-round victory by upstaging two other favorites Zhang Yunfei and Cheng Fei at the National Games on Friday.
The 19-year-old Fan, a member in the Chinese squad in Athens and the balance beam gold medallist in 2003 worlds, stole the spotlight from Cheng and Zhang when she surged to the first place in the second round and firmly held on to it through the rounds.
Except for a comparatively low score of 9.184 in her first round of vault, Fan had outstanding exhibitions on uneven bar, balance and floor, scoring 9.700, 9.787 and 9.684 points respectively.
Cheng, also a member in China's Athens squad, had a joyful start when she scored 9.734 points on her strong vault, the highest among her six-strong group.
After a dim start with 9.384 points on vault, she managed to climb from the sixth place to the third place in the uneven bar rotation.
But she suffered a fatal setback in the third round, when she fell from the balance beam following a major wobble, earning only 9.017 points. She finished fifth.

<< Zhang Nan the 2004 Athens Olympics all-round bronze winner, received another bronze in Friday's all-round final. 'I am satisfied with the result,' a beaming Fan told a press conference.

'Balance beam is my strong event,' she said, referringto her score of 9.784 points on beam.
She got only 9.15 points on vault with a start value of 9.4, because vault is her weakest apparatus, she said.
Looking to the coming world gymnastics championship, Fan said she is eyeing a gold medal on balance beam and will also 'do her best on other apparatus.'
