Last Olympic Test: Italy beats Spain

At the last weekend of July the Italien men's Olympic team won its friendly meet against Spain with 223,500 : 219,75 points.
All-around European vice champion Rafael Martinez was the predominant in all-around with a score of 55,850 Punkten, in front of Igor Cassina (ITA; 54,500) and Allejandro Barrenechea (ESP; 54,35).
The Olympic Champion on rings of Atlanta 1996, the 34 years old Juri Chechi started on three apparatuses (9,725 on rings!) and the also in the Spainish team after his doping suspension was the Olympic vault champion (Sydney 2000) Gervasio Deferr, who scored top on floor (9,600)...

Support for Ronny Ziesmer: New Account for Donations

Common press release of the German Sports Foundation and the German Gymnastic Federation
The German Gymnastic Federation (DTB) and the German Sports Foundation (DSH) have opened as from now on a new national donation account for the financial support of the German national team member Ronny Ziesmer to which money can be paid also from foreign countries, federations or organisations as well....

Help for Ronny Ziesmer!

„What counts for us is to give a perspective to Ronny Ziesmer and his family after the conclusion of the inpatient rehab treatment for his life after the accident and to be able to provide financial support“ the Director of the DSH Gerd Klein und the General Secretary of the DTB Hans-Peter Wullenweber justified their common appeal for funds.
They announced at once further considerations to reach additional proceeds by donations by the organisation of events and other supporting measures.

German gymnast Ronny Ziesmer seriously injured

At a training camp of the German gymnasts in preparation for the Olympic Games in Athens Ronny Ziesmer from the German club SC Cottbus seriously injured himself on Monday afternoon. The gymnast who was already definitely selected for the German Olympic team landed badly while training on vault and suffered from fractures in two cervical vertebras. He immediately underwent surgery in hospital which according to the doctors went well and is now in intensive care. On Wednesday an official press conference took place in the hospital. …....

Birmingham Will Host Gymnastics World Cup

This weekend Birmingham will be jointly hosting the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in December 2004 in partnership with British Gymnastics. The event will be staged at the National Indoor Arena (NIA) in the city centre from 11 –12 December. Birmingham was selected as the host city by the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG)....

Regional development agency Advantage West Midlands will be helping to fund this event and Rosie Paskins, director for Birmingham & Solihull at Advantage West Midlands, said: 'If we are going to create a world class region, we need to stage world class events that will attract visitors from overseas who will see the treasures and savour the hospitality the West Midlands has to offer.'
The city has previously staged several other high profile gymnastic events including the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships and the European Women’s Championships.
British Gymnastics (BG) is delighted that Birmingham has been selected as the venue and their Chairman, Brian Stocks said:
“Birmingham has such an excellent reputation for staging major sports events so we are delighted that the city has been selected. Following the successful staging of events like the World Indoor Athletics Championships we are confident that Birmingham will host a great Gymnastics World Cup.”

Russia won the Duel Meet versus Great Britain

The women's artistic gymnastics squad of Russia won the International GB v Russia - Team competition in the Park Road Gym Centre, Saturdayof Liverpool last weekend with 146.000 to 142.275 points. (Score difference in 2003- 7.225 points, ...in 2004- 3.725 !)
Russia started with: Zamolodchikova, Pavlova, Ziganchina, Ezhova, Gabdrachmanova and Kriuchkova, the British host with Tweddle, Hobbs, Willis, Lennon, Roberts, Line and C.Galashan.
Top three individual scores:
1. Elizabeth Tweddle (GBR)- 36.900
2. Elena Zamolodchikova (RUS)- 36.525
3. Anna Pavlova (RUS) 36.325.

Dutch Open 2004

Last weekend took place the 2004 Dutch Open of women's artistic gymnastics in Nijmegen, Netherlands.
The Dutch Suzanne Harmes from the 'Hazekamp', defended her all-around title on Saturday.
On second place came her teammate Loes Linders (36,475) and the bronze medal went to Berber van den Berg (35,550).
The competition will determine if a second Dutch gymnast meets the Dutch National Olympic Committee's criteria to compete in Athens.
This year's OPEN Nationals includes international participants, so Germany's Lisa Brüggemann (Cologne) was the top non-Dutch gymnast (3rd: 35,912). The fifth highest all-around total, behind van Berber got Yvonne Musik (35,362) from Hoffnungsthal, who has been designated to compete at this summer's Olympic Games in Athens

Dual meet Spain - Romania

The women's team of Romania (151,075 : 148,900) and the men's team of Spain (224,550 : 223,100) won the dual meet between Spain and Romania on Saturday in Madrid. Monica Rosu (ROM / 37,650) and Rafeal Martínez (ESP / 56,925) were the best of individual all around competitions.
For the first time after his absence due to a drug ban Gervasio Deferr (ESP), Olympic Champion on vault, took part in an international competition (on floor and vault only).
Celeste Carnevale from Argentina supplemented the women's starter field. She is the first reserve gymnast for the Wildcard of Olympic Games in Athens.
