Peter Kotzurek remains in Switzerland

Kotzurek will take over Hofmann's job
Peter Kotzurek, from 1996 to 2003 head coach of the Swiss men's national team, will during the course of next year take over the job of Dieter Hofmann as head coach in the Swiss gymnastics center 'Kunst- und Geräteturnzentrum Liestal (NKL)'.
Hofmann will retire after 13 years of successful work....

Peter Kotzurek had been the last head coach of the GDR women's national team and then coached at a German women's gymnastics training center in Bergisch-Gladbach before he went to Switzerland in 1996. Since he started his work there the Swiss men's gymnastics steadily improved on the international level.

New Zealand most successful at the Alsterpokal

The team of the North Harbour Gymnastics Centre Auckland (NZL) was the winner of the first day's team competition with 98.950 points at the International Alsterpokal 2004 held in Hamburg (Germany). The Norwegian team of the Kristiansand Turnfoerening (96.825) and the team of the Sports centre Decin (CZE; 92.150) followed on the ranks.
Ailish Nolan (NZL) proved to be the best all-rounder and on the second day with the apparatus finals she became the most successful gymnast of this tournament with two victories on uneven bars and floor...

The Swedish team placed with a margin of 0.075 points on rank 4!

ALSTERPOKAL 2004, 2nd day
Hamburg, 04-Sep-2004 -

On the 2nd day the team competitions of both the talents and the pupils were scheduled as well as the completing apparatus finals of the six best gymnasts. According to the regulations each gymnast could perform in two finals only.
The best of the all-around Ailish Nolan (NZE) proved to be the most successful gymnast of this tournament by winning both the finals on uneven bars and on floor.
The US-American Lisa Reifschneider from Maryland took gold on vaulting table and Petra Sulcova from the sports centre Decin from the Czech Republic performed the best routine on beam.

The Alsterpokal was held for the third time. This year there were teams from overseas for the first time. Especially these contestants from New Zealand and USA dominated the competitions. This friendship meeting was of a considerably high level, even though not all teams could stand up to the standards set by the leading gymnasts. In total, 102 gymnasts from 9 nations from three continents took part in the Alsterpokal 2004.

Next year the International Alsterpokal 2005 will take place on 23/24 September!

The US-Americans from the Frederick Gymnastics Club, Maryland, dominated both the team as well as the individual competition: They acted stable and flawlessly and set the benchmark with 98.250 points. The further teams did not manage to stand up to this level. The team from Sweden followed with 88.700 ahead of the Czech gymnasts from the sports centre Decin (84.800 points)...
The medal ranks of the all-around went to the US-girls: Kelcie Morris (34.075) placed first, followed by her team-mates Kayla Sienkowski (32.125) and Jessica Keator (32.050).

Canadian medallists welcomed home as heroes

Kyle Shewfelt (CAN), the first Canadian to win an artistic gymnastics medal when he took the gold in the floor exercise at the Olympics in Athens, promised to do his bit to advance sports in Canada by acting as a role model.
'For me, I was lucky on the day that I was able to put it all together,' Shewfelt said after the civic celebration where he was presented with a Calgary Flames jersey and a new street sign for 'Gold Medal Way.'
'I'm ready to share this experience with everybody I possibly can because I think it's inspirational and I want to inspire. I'm so happy to be home,' said Shewfelt when he arrived at the Calgary airport...

Gymnast Karen Cockburn pulled the silver medal she won in trampoline from her bag and kissed it in front of a cheering crowd.
'This is insane. I thought my family, my friends would be here, but this support's overwhelming,' she told reporters. 'It feels really special to be able to share something so special with all these people.'

The US Gymnastics Federatian has refered to a letter from FIG- president Bruno Grandi as 'outrageous request'.
In the letter Grandi advised the Olympic all-around winner Paul Hamm 'for reasons of fairness' to hand over his gold medal to the 3rd- ranked Yang, Tae Young from South Korea...

The protest of the South Koreans as well at the FIG as also at the international Court of Arbitration for Sport CAS has not been successful.
Paul Hamm regretted the incident but was not ready to abdicate the gold medal voluntarily.

Olympic Champion from 1936 died

Matthias Volz,, member of the German Olympic team from 1936 and 3-time medalist at these Olympic Games died on Thursday in Berlin at the age of 94.
Volz won gold with the team and bronze on vault and on rings.
Until the end he followed the present developments in gymnastics.
The last still living member of the 1936 gold medal team now is Walther Steffens at the age of 96...

Olympic balance: Dragulescu and Chorkina No. I in the World-ranking lists

On top of the GYMmedia World-ranking list in the men’s field Romania’s Marian Dragulescu overtook Jordan Jovtchev and now is the new number I.

Svetlana Chorkina however managed to defend her number one position. She is followed by her team mates Elena Zamolodchikova and Anna Pavlova.
All-around Olympic Champion Carly Patterson jumped from rank 22 to rank 5…

In view of the judging scandals in the Olympic men’s artistic gymnastics competitions the most successful coach of the World Leonid Arkaev has asked for changes to be made. In an interview the president of the Russian gymnastics federation explained: ”Something has to happen urgently now! Maybe I shouldn’t say that but we have a mafia of judges”, this was reffered to the high-bar score of Alexei Nemov.
Also the former FIG- president Juri Titov spoke from a scandal and asked to check the videos of the event urgently…

The World star of athletics and nine-time Olympic Champion from the USA Carl Lewis took part in a support- campaign for the injured gymnast Ronny Ziesmer in the studio of the German TV- station “ARD” today. He suggested to use inches and not centimeters for calculating the value of the width of his standing long- jump into Euros. His 27.10 inches will bring the amount of 8,500 EUR to the account for donations to Ronny Ziesmer. Carl then addressed directly to Ronny with the words “….Ronny, you will make it…!”

World Cup Gymnastics Ghent - Belgium

First World Cup in Belgium!
At the kick-off press conference the organizers of the first World Cup Artistic Gymnastics in Belgium announced the countries that have already signed up. With provisional entries of over 25 countries amongst which the absolute top countries as Russia, Romania, USA, Brazil, Australia, Germany, China, Ukraine and Japan this World Cup will certainly be one of the biggest!

The competition will be held in the Flanders Sports Arena,
same location of the 2001 World’s.

Qualifications are on Friday November 5th, Finals on Saturday November 6th (WAG: vault, bars / MAG: floor, pommel horse, rings) and Sunday November 7th (WAG: beam, floor / MAG: vault, uneven bars, high bar).

This weekend on 3/4 September 2004 the Verband für Turnen und Freizeit Hamburg, VTF, Germany, arranges an international tournament in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics in the Sports Hall Wandsbek with top-class athletes.
The well established 'International Alsterpokal' has developed to the gymnastic highlight of the northern part of Germany and welcomes teams from four continents: Africa, America, Australia/New Zealand and Europe....
