Former gymnastics star Andreea Raducan claims back Sydney medal

Romanian gymnast Andreea Raducan has requested the International Olympic Committee to give her back the medal she won at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
Raducan had her medal withdrawn because she was found to have used a then-illegal substance, pseudoephedrine, an ingredient of a simple cold pill. The substance was since removed from the list of drugs banned in sporting events.
The Romanian Sports Olympics Committee is currently considering how to support Raducan’s attempt to get back the Olympic title she was stripped of in Sydney, years after the World Anti-doping Agency removed the substance from the banned list....

Paul Hamm to compete again

Olympic champion Paul Hamm has decided to return to competitive gymnastics, hoping for a less tumultuous path to the all-around title at the Beijing Olympics than the one he took in Athens.
Hamm and his twin brother, Morgan, met last weekend with USA Gymnastics officials to confirm their decisions to return.
They plan to participate in a limited number of events in 2007 while they finish school and get back into competitive shape.

Olympic Champion Masao Takemoto died February 2

Masao Takemoto, a gold medallist in Japan's men's team gymnastics title at the 1960 Rome Olympics, died of bile duct cancer at the age of 87 Friday, February 2 his family said Monday.
Takemoto competed in three consecutive Olympics from the 1952 Helsinki Games and helped capture a gold medal in the men's team competition in Rome in 1960 and  at the age of 41 he placed fifth (tie) all-around, second on high bar, there.
He later worked as a coach at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the 1972 Munich Olympics ....

EU kicks off European Year of Equal Opportunity in Berlin

Ronny Ziesmer - an European Campaign Ambassador

As part of the opening conference of the "European Year of Equal Opportunity" at the Berlin Congress Center (bcc) on Alexanderplatz
the paralysed German gymnast Ronny Ziesmer was appointed as an ambassador for this campaign; in this new function he met the German Minister of Family Affairs, Ursula von der Leyen, who remarked that to accept diversity meant first and foremost to accept other people.

Since his accident in July 2004, Ronny has also had a different and more complex perception of life and proves this by taking on many commitments...

After the conference was opened by Rita Süssmuth, the former speaker of the German parliament, the EU-Commissioner for Employment, Social affairs and Equal opportunity, Vladimír Špidla and the German Minister of Family Affairs, Ursula von der Leyen held a press conference.
Špidla said: 'Europe must strive to achieve true equality of treatment in everyday life. The European Year of Equal Opportunity for all and the framework strategy will give new impetus to the efforts to implement the EU's non-discrimination rules in full, which up until now have frequently been delayed and obstructed.

World elite in Paris - The elite of the juniors in Berlin!
For the elite gymnasts of the seniors the World Cup series starts in Paris this weekend. In Berlin, however, 25 junior teams from 17 different countries and 3 different continents will compete at the 12th  INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR TEAM CUP 2007 in men's artistic gymnastics on Saturday, March 17th.
Title holder for the event is the junior team from the Olympic team gold medalist Japan.
The first guests to arrive in Berlin were the boys from "Down under" (AUS). They are already participating in this top international event for gymnasts on the junior level for the 7th time.

For Australia's coach R. Hong and two of the gymnasts it's already their second visit to Berlin.

A great entry field at the 12th  INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR TEAM CUP 2007 
Leading European gymnastics nations such as Switzerland, Belarus, Spain, Great Britain and France will come to Berlin with their best teams - five nations are even bringing their entire national squad!
Finland is participating in this event for the first time and they will even come with two teams right away.
The contact with Finland was established by the Cup-Organiser and Germany's current head coach for junior gymnasts  Siegfried Wüstemann (Berlin) at a UEG coaches' seminar.
The team from Slovenia had to withdraw but teams from Poland and Israel were added to the entry field.
The competition with the 24 teams will take place in two groups consisting of 12 teams each.

Team of the Berlin hosts
The Berlin team will include  Robin Michel who was recently chosen as Berlin's "Young Sportsman of the Year 2006" as well as Philip Sorrer, Phillip Herder, Paulo Lando and Marvin Pokroppa.
Of course these young gymnasts are keen to improve the 5th place which they achieved last year!
... the Berlin 'Gymnastics Talent Schools' will also show their abilities!
In the break between competition groups 1 and 2 children in the age of 4 - 6 of the Berlin 'Gymnastics Talent Schools' will present their performances.

2007 HALL of FAME Inductees announced

The Board of Directors of the "International Gymnastics Hall of Fame" announced the 2007 Induction Celebration on May 11 in Oklahoma City, USA.
Once more, some of the highest representatives of international artistic gymnastics have been chosen to be honoured at the 11th annual induction.
The IGHOF Board announced the names of those to be honoured in 2007:
Simona Amanar (ROM), Elena Davydova (RUS), Shigeru Kasamatsu (JPN) and Eberhard Gienger (GER) ...

F.I.G. Coach Academy Course in South America

In his 125 Anniversary the “academic” year of the FIG was ended with a Level 1 Course of the Coach Academy in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
This event for South American countries was organized by the F.I.G. and the PAGU (Pan-American Gymnastics Union) together, because it wasn’t only an academy course but also a training camp for young gymnasts.
Eight countries participated with coaches and gymnasts:
Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Puerto Rico and Uruguay. In totality 34 coaches attended the course, 19 women's and 15 men's artistic gymnastics coaches.....

The president of the Confederation of Argentina, Luis María Díaz BANCALARI, welcomed the coaches and gymnasts from the different participating countries and highlighted the importance of a constant updating coach education.
<< He also greeted the FIG experts (photo, from right to left) Eric Boucharin (France), Andrea João (Brazil), Gustavo Sito (Argentina) and Dr. Flavio Bessi (Germany) and wished them a pleasant stay.

After a brief introduction the experts started with the lessons which include four theoretical units in Anatomy, Biomechanics, Training Theory and Psychology as well four practical units for each discipline.

During the closing ceremony an evident lucky participant concluded: “I’m so happy to having been here. It was the best course I’ve ever had. I want to thank the FIG for having offered me this possibility.”

31. TURNIER DER MEISTER - Highlight of the Pre-Olympic Year 2007

One week after the first world cup event of the new series in Paris-Bercy (FRA), the German host of the Pre-Olympic world championships (Stuttgart) invites to the traditional "TURNIER DER MEISTER" .

From March 23 to 25 the "31st Tournament of Masters" will held in Cottbus, in the venue "Lausitz-Arena", again. Started in 1972 this event is the oldest ond most traditional top sport event of artistic gymnastics with a special familiar and warm-hearted character.

Organiced by the reigning German Team Champion, the Sport club Cottbus and it's tournament director Sylvio Kroll, all the guests from all over the world will find best conditions to prepair for the upcoming world championships from September 1 to 9 in Stuttgart...
