British Elissa Downie retires

Great Britain's multiple medallist at World and European Championships, 23-year-old Elissa Rebecca Louise "Ellie" DOWNIE has announced her retirement from top-level sport. Ellie retires as one of Britain's most successful gymnasts. She won 12 medals at World and European Championships in her career and represented the British Gymnastics team to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
2017 was arguably Ellie's best year; a year in which she became a major all-around champion - another first for Great Britain. This happened at the European Championships in Cluj, Romania. After qualifying for all five individual finals, she became European all-around champion and also won individual medals on vault, floor and uneven bars. "Ellie has also been at the forefront of change in the sport. She has shown great courage by speaking out about her experiences, highlighting the issues that need to be addressed and in doing so helping to reform the sport of gymnastics," a statement from the British Gymnastics Federation said.
