Angelina MELNIKOVA (AIN), second AA Gold since 2021 |
Unsurprisingly, Angelina MELNIKOVA (AIN) one of the most experienced athletes, won the all-around competition, repeating her success from 2021 (Kitakyushu). The USA, which has been on the medal podium every year since 2003 (Anaheim) and most recently dominated with Simone Biles, continued this tradition with silver for Leanne WONG and her second World Championship runner-up title after 2021. China's ZHANG, Qingying prevented fellow favourite Kaylia Nemour (ALG) from reaching the podium with a narrow lead of +0.069 points, leaving her to settle for fourth place. Lena Bickel achieved a respectable 16th place for Switzerland, while Karina Schönmaier and Silja Stöhr took rank 19 and 21 place for Germany.
The gold medals on the event finals went to four athlets from four different nations !
* For the first time, Indonesia will host the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships for men and women in its metropolis of Jakarta, home to 11 million people. From October 19 to 25, the 53rd World Championships for men will determine the champions in the all-around and on the six apparatus. There will be no team competition between nations.
* Fom Monday, October 20 on the qualifiers for the 44th WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS for WOMEN started the first decision (all-around) on Thursday (October 23). However, like the men's competition, these championships are marred by an entry boycott for Israeli athletes, who will then join the men on the final two days to determine the world's best on their four final apparatus.

♦ ALL-AROUND FINAL:
With a slight improvement on her preliminary performance (especially on the uneven bars and floor) and in the absence of stars Simone Biles (USA) and Rebeca Andrade (Brazil), Russian favourite Angelina MELNIKOVA (AIN) repeated her focused all-around performance from the preliminary round and, despite a weaker beam score, confidently became the all-around world champion for the second time in 2021 (Kitakyushu) with 55.066 points. Silver went to Leanne Wong (USA) and bronze to Zhang Qingying (CHN). As Russia's Melnikova competed under a neutral flag, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 was played at the medal ceremony instead of the national anthem.
The battle for the other medals was much closer behind her:
Above all, because the American Leanne WONG achieved the highest score of the day on the vault (14.466), whereas she had slipped to 9th place in the qualifiers after a botched vault, but now – as at the World Championships four years ago – she was again behind Melnikova, winning the silver medal (54.966).
And all-around medals were not that common for China anyway: since YAO Jinnan in 1911 in Tokyo, ZHANG, Qingying (54.633) won bronze, just 0.3 behind silver, but only narrowly ahead of Algeria's Kaylia Nemour, who missed the podium in fourth place with -0.069 points.
The best gymnast from the German-speaking world in the all-around final was Switzerland's Lena Bickel, who impressed with her uneven bars routine (8th/13.466) and can consider her 16th place a success, as only Giulia Steingruber and Ariella Kaslin have achieved such results for Switzerland in this millennium.
